  • So brilliant I'm speechless

    "Perfect"
    The Good;
    Everything, it's all staggeringly brilliant. If I was to name a favourite scene it would be when Forrest and Riley are stuck in the lift about to be gassed, Riley's desperately trying to remember the overide code and Forrest holds up a piece of paper on which he's written 'C'mon! C'mon!', makes me laugh every time. Also love Gile's slideshow, the final battle and Olivia. The Gentlemen's applause.

    The Bad;
    Naught. Ok, when Spike get's his mug of blood from the fridge it's full up but then he takes a sip from it and it's almost empty

    Best line;
    Not the ep for that

    Character death;
    At least 6 people have their hearts gorily cut out

    Tied up;
    Spike to the chair

    Women good/men bad;
    When Anya starts to complain about Xander's insensitivity towards her he comments "Boy you really did turn into a girl, didn't you?". Love Buffy's horrified reaction to Giles' drawing of her and her exasperated look as Riley smashes the wrong thing. The scene with the Wicca group, a bunch of 'wanna blessed be's' is hilarious(when the Charmed sisters did this they ended up dancing naked with them around the fire I recall? Shame we don't get that here). .

    Jeez!;
    The scene where the Gentlemen hold the guy down and slice his heart out, yeeesh! We don't actually see anything but Giles' slideshow doesn't leave much to the imagination. Also Spike's V sign to Xander. Buffy breaks guy's wrists and henchmens neck.

    Kinky dinky;
    The return of Olivia, Giles' 'orgasm friend'. Unfortunately this seems to be the end for them. Anya's crude hand gesture to Xander at the end, Xander seems to think that the Gentlemen are after 'boobies'. In fairness, everyone seems perplexed by Buffy's hand gesture. Spike says he doesn't want to be tied to a chair whilst Xander and Anya 'shag'.

    Calling Captain Subtext;
    And here's Tara. Personally I for one thought the subtext between her and Willow was evident right from the beginning, just the look on Willow's face at the end of their final scene together when she calls her 'special'. Xander thinks Spike would bite him as he's 'moist and delicious'. The awesome dream sequence is great, the little girl I think is quite obviously Buffy as a child. All very Nightmare on Elm Street. Remember reading a great fanfic where Buffy and Anya are killed by Freddy Kreuger but in the end he wakes up from his dream screaming, chained to his bed in the mental hospital he's been confined to since the night he got torched. But after the nurse sedates him she walks away and we discover she's actually Buffy.
    Spike calls Giles a 'sissy'. Forrest says that he and Riley are 'pretty' and suggests Riley 'get with the kissing'. Giles hugs Willow.

    Guantanamo Bay;
    The Initiative/Town authorities cover up the Gentlemen's activities by declaring a laryngitis outbreak.

    Scoobies to the ER;
    Buffy get's stabbed with the scalpel but just seems to shrug it off.

    Where's Dawn?
    Quietly at home with Joyce

    Questions and observations;
    Just terrific, one of the Buffy eps that just sets the standard for all others, Joss at his finest. Isn't it a bit much though for Buffy to automatically assume she's the princess? Finally spotted Andy Hallet in the dream sequence, he's sitting two seats behind SMG with a dark haired girl sat in front of him. The little girl declares that you 'Can't call to mom', foretelling Joyce's death? Equally when Riley in the dream turns into a Gentleman is he revealing his hidden side?
    Spike is now allowed to roam around loose. The Wicca group refer to the 'wolf at our side' which Oz used to be. Will makes good cookies so why should she be opposed to the bakesale? The clocktower scene is very Tim Burton right down to the music. Tara trips like a true horror heroine. Nice twist with Willow's door. Buffy kills 8 Gentlemen and one henchman. Pink Floyd are a Cambridge group whilst Giles went to Oxford.

  • Joss Whedon is a God! A brilliant episode and such a brave move.

    Words aren't enough - which is oddly fitting for this episode. To have such a normally 'wordy' show that's invented its own language from to time become an almost silent film is a touch of genius. The actions speak loud and clear (and how do they get away with those little risque bits like buffy trying to mime staking a vampire?) The Gentlemen feel like monsters you've really heard about in nursery rhymes or something, but again they're new, thanks to Mr Whedon. And they are VERY creepy. It should have won an award. And the end brings the whole communication bit back and how easy and hard it is at the same time. People have written dissertations about this episode, and that's fine, but I just say watch in awe, then watch again to get all the nuances - then watch again just for the fun of it.
  • Hush

    Hush was another perfectly classic episode of Buff the Vampire Slayer. This episode was terrifying and very entertaining. I really like the story behind this episode which was based off of the realm of fairy tales. There was lots of great action, thrilling suspense, and dark humor. This is one of my favorite episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I think this was a great way for Buffy and Riley to find out about each others night time activities. The Gentlemen were truly scary, and I can't even imagine being their target. This episode also introduced a new character, Tara, a witch who is interested in learning more about Willow. I look forward to seeing what happens in the next episode!

  • An absolutely outstanding episode; unforgettable, scary and pivotal. Simply unbelievable.

    "Perfect"
    Hush is an undeniably spectacular episode, one of the series' best and definitely in my Top 10 episodes. Everything about it works- the plot, the acting, the music and the villains. It's simply mind-blowing and proves Season 4 was every bit as brilliant as the rest.

    This episode is one that you won't forget soon. I can't stress enough how amazing it is. It entered new realms of TV and remains one of the most original and well executed episodes in TV history.

    The main plot of The Gentlemen is fantastic; they are without a doubt some of the best villains on the show. They're incredibly creepy and yet so polite- if they could speak, you can just imagine them with a very posh English accent. They were done on wires, which really works. It is incredibly unnerving to see these fiends glide across the city, searching for their next victim. Their aims, powers and weaknesses are very original. The silent movie theme works incredibly well- the cast are all brilliant. They manage to get the emotion, humour and feelings of the show across without saying a word for most of the episode. It proves how strong the talent is on this show.

    From the opening scene, we know this is something special. The little song sang by the girl in Buffy's dream was spine-tingling and you knew this wasn't any normal episode. Unfortunately, Riley's horrific "If I kiss you, it'll make the sun go down" line is a bit of a dampner but just forget it and all will be fine.

    The music in this episode is simply breathtaking- perfectly reflected the tone of the episode and giving you chills. It really is extraordinary. The background music in this show really is outstanding- who can forget the heartbreaking melody that plays when Buffy dies in The Gift? And in terms of Angel, what about the bone chilling sound that plays when Drusilla kills Darla in The Trial? The background music is often overlooked and it shouldn't- it's brilliant and this episode proves that.

    However, Hush isn't simply a brilliant yet pointless episode- it also introduced a highly popular couple who will form probably the most popular couple on the show- Tara! From her first scene I simply adored her. Some criticize her as being boring but I was very drawn to the meek, shy girl who's always letting others talk down to her. I felt so bad for her and I loved her instant connection with Willow. It's a memorable moment watching them join their power together and achieve what one couldn't. A fantastic introduction.

    Buffy and Riley also have their first kiss here- something I'm not especially excited about but it was OK. More interesting was their meeting in the clocktower- Slayer vs. Army Boy. It's an important moment.

    Finally, the scene with Giles' slideshow is absolutely HILARIOUS. The bit where Buffy does the hand motion and it looks like something very wrong is laugh out loud funny. Definitely something to look out for.

    I could go on and on about the brilliance of Hush. Simply put; it's a breath of fresh air. Original, terrifying and extremely well acted. An absolutely excellent episode, in all respects.
  • Creepy Gentlemen, scary henchmen and no words. This truly is an epic TV event.

    Joss writes yet another marvelous episode. An episode where much is said but not much is spoken. To write dialogue without dialogue in this manner is a sign of Joss Whedons genious. He manages to, in an entertaining way, move the plot and the arc forward without words.

    This weeks demon is scary in a classic horror way wich manages to chill us to our bones. The losing of voices leads to a number of intresting dilemmas and my favorite exposition in the series. This is one of my absolute top episodes of Buffy and an amazing addition to TV-history.
  • This has to be one of the scariest hours of television that I have ever had the privilege of watching. There was so much that needed to be said by each character that they couldn\'t say. How can you watch this episode with the lights off? Series classic.

    10
    "Perfect"
    With this one episode, \"Buffy, the Vampire Slayer\" became iconic. While it was one of the best programs on the air in 1999, it surpassed everything that was on the air and it helped save a season that was at best pedestrian. The fourth season was nothing special until that mind-blowing and magical episode. The gentlemen had to be some of the creepiest Joss demons that he ever created. We always take for granted the one thing that everyone does when they are scared or being hurt, scream. Joss brilliantly took that ability away from the Sunnydale denizens. And what resulted was breath taking. You, as the viewer, watched in suspense as Tara dropped her books in the street as the gentlemen came closer and closer to her. She had been introduced in this episode so it would not have been a shock or Joss to have her killed by the gentlemen. (He had much bigger plans for her that will play out through season 5 and 6.) And the scene in the classroom with the scoobies being \"lectured\" about the new evil in town was hilarious. Buffy\'s staking motion cracks me up every time I see it.

    All in all, this is why I watch television for masterpieces like this.
  • Thought I heard her calling my name now

    9.9
    "Superb"
    So here it is, the first of Joss’s experimental episodes, the first of the avant-garde trilogy which also includes The Body and Once More With Feeling. These three episodes are all turning points in the season long story arc(s), with this one featuring Riley and Buffy\'s first kiss (in dreams and in reality), the introduction of Tara and the removal of Olivia. The brilliance of this episode lies in having the characters of a very talky show fall silent, combined with the fairytale Tim Burton-esque baddies who have skeletal smiles more terrifying than a legion of slime-demons. The Gentlemen resemble a grotesque ballet with their floating walk and elegant hand movements, backed up by their whirling strait-jacketed minions and a beautiful score.

    So, Buffy prophesises the snog of Riley and also the Nightmare on Revello Drive big bads. “If I kiss you,” says dream-Riley, “it’ll make the sun go down,” hinting that Buffy subconsciously knows that, like her, Riley has a second job at night time. Revealing her slaying duties to all and sundry hasn’t really bothered Buffy before, but Riley appears so corn-fed and innocent that maybe she doesn’t want to ruin her vision of his normalcy by telling him about things that go bump and steal voices (and worse) in the night. She doesn’t even tell him about her saucy dream. Obviously, this episode is about communication, and as well as not telling each other their secrets, Riley and Buffy aren’t moving any further along with their relationship – “Words get in the way” claims Buffy - and it’s only when they can’t babble at each other that they finally kiss.

    Meanwhile at the PC Wicca Group, new girl Tara can’t speak up in front of the “Gaia moon menstrual life-force power” faux-witches who are “all talk”, but when she and Willow combine their forces, they show real girl power, the energy between them enough to send the drinks machine scuttling over to the door. Neither of them can do it alone, but their pooled strength is awesome. Tara is effectively a Willow clone; now that Willow has clout and confidence there needs to be someone new to be put into danger. Tara is the first person ever to look up to Willow - she has been feeling pretty ordinary and dull since Oz left and Tara’s belief that Willow is special is a big part of their relationship.

    Anya wants to talk about her relationship with Xander, who doesn’t, but his feelings for her, outside of “lots and lots of orgasms”, are shown clearly when the combination of vamped-out Spike drinking blood and Anya sleeping on the couch makes Xander think Spike has killed his girlfriend and leads to him beating up the neutered vamp. Spike’s bemused face, Xander’s carefree shrugged apology and Anya’s gesture suggesting that they have sex make this scene a treat. As for Olivia, the only point to her character is that her decision that Sunnydale and Giles’s life are too scary is a factor that leads to the events of Giles’s semi-breakdown in A New Man. That or she was a personal friend of Joss – she is in the three episodes that he wrote and directed for S4.

    Considering this ep is one of the few that is genuinely scary, there is a lot of top class humour as well - provided by Anya eating crisps whilst Giles makes his entertaining OHP presentation complete with gruesome stick men bleeding, Buffy with fat hips and Xander reading sex into everything, all backed by dramatic music. The early scenes of silence resemble an old movie with exaggerated emotion, music and captions – Forrest writing “Come on come on,” on a notepad when Riley can’t remember the override code. Prof. Walsh, despite thinking Riley and Forrest should have taken the low-tech stairs rather than the voice-operated lift, has set herself up with a hi-tech Stephen Hawking type-to-voice computer. However, all of the Initiative’s technology and arsenal is little compared to Giles’s knowledge and research; he knows what the Gentlemen are and what they want, Riley discovers their lair by accident.

    The battle in the clock tower is important, not just because the Slayer and the Commando come face to face with each other, but to show to the viewers that Riley can be as good as Angel – he saves Buffy and smashes the box, although his first attempt, when he breaks the bottle as Buffy mimes to him, shows that there are still some communication issues between the two, and we end the episode as we began, with Buffy and Riley not communicating, but this time with no demons, no musical score, just dead air space.

  • Possibly one of the greatest television episodes ever.

    Truly amazing.

    After 3 seasons, the departure of fav characters such as Angel, Cordelia and Oz and the arrival of the spin-off series of Angel (the writing talents spread out) how could this brilliant television series get this good?

    Hush is an episode that will make any right-minded individual who has not seen Buffy the Vampire Slayer (maybe due to it's ridiculous name) appreciate our beloved series and the extraordinary talents of it's creator, writer and director, Joss Whedon.

    The "silent" episode is easily the series most eery, and by way of a miracle (Joss), one of it's most comical. Highlights include the superb soundtrack(fit for a feature-length horror film) it's witty screenplay (the lecture hall sequence where the Scoobies "discuss" their frightening monster-of-the-week), the terrifying presence of the "Gentlemen" themselves and it's overall statement on communication has a whole.

    This is simply the best episode of the season, giving it's army of fans confidence that their show can still deliver "monster-of-the-week" stories it was famed for in it's first season.

    As an Englishgirl who constantly hears, "American T.V. is rubbish" my answer, accompanied by a smug, satisfied expression, is simply "Hush".

    Absolutely outstanding.
  • Creepiest Episode to Date.

    9.4
    "Superb"
    "Hush" is by far the scariest episode of Buffy I've ever watched. This episode revolves around these demons called "the Gentleman", which steal all the voices of Sunnydale and try to remove 7 hearts of the inhabitants. The Gentleman alone are scary, but the things that they realease are just as frightening. They release these seekers in straightjackets to hold down the victims while the Gentlemen cut the victim open, alive. This is a very

    frightening episode and should not be watched by people with a fear of crazy people or tall, hovering, black-eyed demons who always smile. But overall, this is one of my favorite Buffy episodes of seaon 4.
  • The best episode of the first four seasons by far, it is so inventive, and geuinely scary. This is the episode to show non-Buffy believers in order to convert them.

    10
    "Perfect"
    I absolutely loved this episode. The scariest, best-paced, action-packed, and most creative episode to date.

    First the premise, almost an entire episode in silence is fantastic. It is up there with Seinfeld's Chinese Restaurant episode as the best executed gimick-episode.

    But unlike other episodes, this gimick placed more emphisis on the cinimetography, the action, the sound and the plot. As a result, the episode is a work of art. The scenes of the Gentlemen and the overheah projection by Giles and the fight scene with the insane-assistants are classic.

    This is the episode that all other "10" episodes should be measured by.
  • Like all Buffy The Vampire Slayer episodes, this was a good one to watch.The only downside to it was that it literally scared the crap out of me the first time I saw it!

    Like all Buffy The Vampire Slayer episodes, this was a good one to watch.The only downside to it was that it literally scared the crap out of me the first time I saw it!

    I was 10 years old and I was watching this on TV at around 8:00pm, this really did scare me.

    First of all the little girl singing was creepy, then a zoom right on to 'The Gentlemen's creepy, smiling, teeth-baring face!

    Then how scary is it seeing people being murdered by having their hearts ripped out?!

    It also creepy with all the silence, but Buffy saves the day by screaming her head off, and causing the boogeymen's head to explode into bogeys!

    The upside of this episode is that Riley and Buffy discover each other's secret, and it also introduces Tara!

    The scariest ever Buffy episode made! 4/10
  • Can't even shout, can't even cry, the Gentlemen are coming by. Tapping on windows knocking on doors, they need to take seven and they might take yours. Can't call to mum, can't say a word. you're gonna die screaming and you won't be heard...

    *shivers* This has got to be the creepiest episode of the entire series. Fairytale creatures come to Sunnydale and steal the towns voices, so they can't scream, and then they steal hearts, they need seven to perform some sort of ritual. These demons called The Gentlemen, are so gracefully freaky... it's amazing! Also some extremely funny moments where the scoobies misinterpret certain things, and also a few funny moments between Xander and Spike. The funniest episode of season 4 and the 4th best of the series! This episode will send shivers down your spine... :) :)
  • Silence, creepy men and more silence. in this memorable episode of buffy for once in their lives everybody in sunnydale has fallen quite while creepy gentlemen are coming after people to steal 7 hearts. You can't scream so what can you do?

    This episode has to be one of my favourie episodes off all time. We have a very original storyline and a creepy one at that. throughout the whole episode i was thinking how scary would it be if everyone couldn't speach and when someone like those freaky men and there sidekick were coming to murder you well i would totally poop my pants. i loved how they started to introduce a new love interest in this episode it was suddle but direct. the episode still had the comedy heir about although it was very creepy. i think that my favourite part of this show was the gentlemen though they were so creepy and they did a good job with, from their creepy little smiles to the fact that they floated to how they killed their victims, oh and their sidekick straight jacket wearing people who scared almost just as much as the gentlemen did. in all this episode was very very well written and it will remain one of my fav. episodes of all time.
  • Hush is one of my favourite episodes from Season four! The story is great and the Gentlemen are creepy!

    9.5
    "Superb"
    Well, in this episode, all of Sunnydale lose thier voices. It must be pretty frightning to have all these people not being able to talk. The best bit of the whole episode is when Giles does like a seminar. He has this projector and explains the Gentlemen using slides. Anya has popcorn and Buffy and Willow have message boards. When Buffy and Willow go to Giles' place, I love it how Willow writes on her board "Hi Giles!" and then he goes over to her and sort of hugs her. Very nice. Buffy's scream at the end is really amazing! The scene where the Gentlemen are chasing Tara through the college is really creepy too!

    This is one of my favourite episodes of season 4!
  • The town of Sunnydale is plunged into silence as The Gentleman arrive to carry out a macabre plan that involves cutting out the hearts of their victims.Will Buffy regain her voice in time to prevent more carnage?

    10
    "Perfect"
    This is the episode that you show your friends who are yet to be convinced about the brilliance that is 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer'.If they aren't convinced after seeing 'Hush' then there is no hope for them! And it's time to get new friends.

    Every cast member,from the regulars to the guest stars & the soon to be regulars,are totally on song here in this truly magnificent piece of television.

    Even with repeated viewings you are still scared witless by the blood curdling antics of The Gentleman & you will laugh out loud at the clever script & comedic set pieces,most notably the scene where Giles explains The Gentleman's modus operandi to the gang with hand-drawn overheads.

    And as far as plot development goes the whole Buffy/Riley/The Initiative begins to unfold and viewers get to meet Tara for what will not be the last time!
  • Season 4, Episode 10.

    Sunnydale is put on quarantine after a "laryngitis epidemic" strikes. However, it is really a group of creatures called The Gentlemen that steal the voices away from people in the town they go in, and they then collect seven hearts from people in the town. Meanwhile, Buffy and Riley find out secrets about each other that can change everything.

    This episode was definitely a classic. It was different than any other episode. I like episodes of supernatural shows when characters lose their senses. :) Buffy also looked beautiful in this episode. She always does, but it really showed in this episode. Plus, Tara is finally introduced. Then, Buffy and Riley find out each other's secrets. Season 4 has gotten better in the past couple of episodes, definitely. :)
  • #1 Buffy Episode of All Time!

    10
    "Perfect"
    Though "The Gift" is a close second for me, I love love love this episode. It has it all--it's funny, hauntingly scary, visually stunning, and full of suspense. All of these characteristics are only heightened by the silence carried on for half of the show, since the characters are unable to speak. The Gentlemen are by far the scariest, creepiest monsters ever on this show--like a nightmare made real. They look like demonic doctors from a insane asylum with their straitjacketed patients traipsing along with them. Though I think Season 4 was the weakest season out of all 7--mainly due to the presence of Riley, Buffy's annoying love interest--I think this one episode makes up for the many sub par episodes from this season (Where the Wild Things Are, Beer Bad, etc.).
  • The slideshow people! The slideshow...

    10
    "Perfect"
    First of all, this episode of Buffy is the only on to date that gave me a kind of creepy feeling. All the other ones are fun. funny and sarcastic but this one was actually kind of...ulgh. The Gentlemen are an ulgh looking kind of wide eyed dudes that Whedon gave great detail to. I love the suits and suitcases, I loved the bony hands and the no lips smile with the silver teeth. The no voice part was eery and the fact that they we're so nice in their demeanor and so civilised yet serial killer like made it perfect. But the slideshow...definately the best part.
  • One of the top 10 episodes of Buffy. A staple of the series.

    9.5

    The Gentlemen come to Sunnydale looking to steal them some hearts. In order to more easily pull this off, they steal everyone's voices so that they can't scream. The gang must come up with a way to destroy The Gentlemen and save the day.

    This is also the episode where Buffy discovers that Riley is one of the commandos. And the episode where Willow meets Tara.

    I absolutely love this episode from start to finish. About 2/3rds of the episode is done with no spoken dialogue, and it's pulled off brilliantly. We're treated to one of the funniest moments in Buffy during Giles' projector meeting.
  • A spll of scilnce is cast over sunnydale and its up to bBuffy and the scoobies to sve the day ( as usual) from the evil heart consuming demons called "The gentlemen".

    This episode is one of my favourite ones which has ever been on the buffyverse Not only is Whedons writing tuned to perfection as per usual but the way the actors perform there roles without speech proves that they are national treasures.The scene where Giles is tying to explain the gentlemen to he scoobies is just priceless. Also the silent horror o the gentlemen gave the guy who I was watching it with nightmares. the floating as that thy areso silet that they cold attack at ay time! Spike is also SO flippig cool! The silent dialougbetn him and Xander is one of the best moments on television i can remember.
  • I dare say this is a brilliant stand-alone episode.

    Everyone knows how I feel about the somewhat dissapointing 4th Season of Buffy overall, but Hush, Joss Whedon's attempt at scaring us through his own twisted fairy tales is a masterful peice of storytelling. Something I hadn't seen on TV before, the whole show is practically dialogue free, thanks to some creepy demons who steal the voices of everyone in town. The characters are forced now to convey emotions (mostly horror or confusion) visually, and the audience is forced to pay more attention to the themes of everyday communication both on the show and in our own lives. Whedon puts a great angle on some of the pantomimes, with equal parts humor and terror. The Gentlemen definately haunted my dreams for years to come! One of Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Top 10 Best
  • Probably the best episode of 'Buffy' I have ever seen

    10
    "Perfect"
    This is one of the few episodes of 'Buffy, The Vampire Slayer' where I got really scared. The Gentlemen are one of the creepiest monsters that ever came on this show and the whole thing with them gliding over the streets and their minions flapping around was just great to see and it kinda reminded me of Harry Potter, only a scary version.

    Besides the horror part, this episode is absolutely hilarious. For example the moment when Xander thinks Anja has been bitten by Spike, but especcialy Giles showing his beautiful slides in the classroom.

    My personal favorite, with a very creative and well written plot.

    by far a classic episode in every sense of the word.

    what hasn't been stated about this episode?its amazing!!and i love it so much.

    one of my favourite episodes on the show,that is both striking and high on the originality factor.

    there are plenty hilarious scenes too,as well as the gentlemen creeping around every corner.

    there is superb character development.

    and HUSH proves just how fantastic the actors are.

    Joss gives a fabulous direction to this episode and HUSH has to be among the greatest things to happen to television and certainly one of the greatest episodes ever made.

    it is highly recommended viewing and everyone MUST see this episode.

  • A Beautiful Silence

    Hush-The entire town of Sunnydale goes silent when a group of strange creatures called The Gentlemen appear and steal everyone's voices. Buffy and the gang must solve the mystery and overcome the bad guys without being able to discuss their battle plan.

    Now, Buffy the Vampire Slayer has always been praised for being such a wonderful series as the way it combines comedy, horror, action, drama and other genres so smoothly has never been seen on TV since it debuted. One of it's biggest praises the show gets is for it's amazing writing, which captures such a unique quality for TV. Of course, Joss Whedon knowing this, wanted to turn that praise on the critics and fans head when he wrote "Hush". Unlike anything TV had done up to that point, "Hush" runs for 44 mintues yet 75% of the episode is done without speech from all the actors in the episode. Now one would think attempting an episode like this would be disastrous, but Joss Whedon truly shows he is a mastermind when it comes to originality as "Hush" is not only a classic episode of the series, but one of the finest achievements in teleivision history.

    The whole cast are all spectacular throughout when performing with no speech and seem unfazed by the dramatic change in how an episode usually runs. The best scene to show this is the infamous college classroom scene when Giles shows the gang his slideshow of the evil that has taken all the voices of Sunnydale. From Anya casually eating popcorn to Giles's priceless drawings to Willow over-acting her explanations to Xander's "boobies" gesture to Buffy's...uhh...hand gesture that everyone misinterprets for something else is excellent and one of the best scenes from the series. Besides being beyond hilarious, Joss really develops a script that shows how important communication is and how sometimes the less one says, can allow people to truly act out what they feel. Like Xander finally showing how much he cares about Anya when he thinks Spike drank her blood. Then there's Buffy and Riley sharing their first kiss, now that they can't speak, they now can act on instinct.

    The Gentlemen have to be some of the scariest villains I've ever seen on a TV series, maybe even any type of screen all together! They bring some of the scariest moments of the series when they appear on screen with their stray jacket hunchback minions. Just the way they glide around Sunnydale and casually kill their victims with smiles on their faces just sent chills down my spine! Joss just does terror so well and watching helpless victims like Olivia and Tara running into the Gentlemen were very intense. Speaking of Tara, Amber Benson makes her first appearence here and she's stunning throughout. She already has great chemistry with Alyson Hannigan with Tara and Willow's scenes being quite powerful here. Buffy and Riley finding out each others' identities made for another great moment as by episode end they're forced to talk to each other again, but having nothing to say which is ironic yet brilliant end to the episode. The only episode to ever get nominated by the Emmys for "Best Writing in a Drama Series", "Hush" is a chrowning achievement to the cast and crew who crafted an episode never done before on TV. Joss Whedon is a true visionary when it comes to creating thought-provoking writing and that couldn't be more true with this perfection of an hour.
  • I guess we need to talk... *silence*

    That is why I love watching Buffy the vampire slayer so much! It s sooo good! great actually!

    This episode was anouther great one! Buffy and Riley were finally able to kiss without silly talking and everything was so weird! Those Gentlemen were creepy, so unreal, and I don't know if it was mentioned in the episode, but I didn't catch why they needed human hearts.

    It was so cute when Xander thought Spike killed Anya and he punched him. I think that was the first time Xander addmited to himself that he's in love with Anyanka...

    Spike is funny and I love him ^_^
  • Silent night - a silence falls over Sunnydale when the otherwordly beings come to town and steals the power of speech from all the residents.

    This episode is really cool. This is the episode where Buffy and Riley have their first kiss and they also find out there not who they say they are. Alyson (willow) proves in this episode that she would be really good in silent movies. This episode is the first episode that Tara appears in and we see the connection between her and willow. They are trapped in a room and they try to move a vending machine by hand which dosent work. Willow then tries to use her magic to move the vending machine which dosent work either untill Tara realises what she is trying to do and as Tara holds Willow's hand the vending machine blocks the doorway surprise surprise.
  • Evil, fairytale creatures called, The Gentlemen haunt the streets of sunnydale stealing everyone's voices.

    Hush is one of the best episodes in the series. The idea to have no dialogue in this episode is brilliant. There's a lot in this episode that happens and there are some very funny parts. Funny scenes in this episode are when Xander thinks Spike is drinking Anya's blood, when Xander blames Spike for stealing his voice and when everyone's watching Giles slideshow. In this episode Buffy finally tells Riley or is about to tell Riley who she really is which makes the storyline more interesting. A new character named Tara is introduced to the series which is really cool because she's a witch.
  • it really is.imagine if you can't talk...

    this is such a hilarius episode!i love it alot,'cause even if you never watch buffy before,you'll understand it. it started of with my least favorite character,riley.that time,they seem fine and all.though i guess Xander having Spike living in his basement made him not soo fine.when they were about to sleep,spike mimic anya in a falsatone to annoy Xander,that was funny. in the morning,they found out they can't talk when buffy wanted to say hi to willow.and then they jump to the scene where Xander pop up an tried talking,but couldn't.it was hilarius.then he blame Spkie,if he could say anything, i guess he'd say somehting like:"you!you did this to me!".while spkie just lie there and stare at him,and the background music just made it a whole lot harder to not laugh,it was just such the right music.and as i type this i could not help but smile.lol.and while Xander called buffy,he just remembered that he can't talk while spike stare at him like saying,"how bloody dumb can he be?"ithe part that i like most in this episode is when Xander thought that Anya was dead because spike made a meal out of her.he lunge at spike which could not fight and when anya came up from behind,he looks like he would say something like:"she's standing right there!" it ended when riley and buffy knew each other's secrets.this is pretty much the best episode in season 4.and lucky for you,i'm gonna stop rambling on.
