Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Season 5 Episode 10

Into the Woods

Aired Tuesday 8:00 PM Dec 19, 2000 on The WB

  • Trivia

    • Goof: When Buffy and Riley are making love in her bedroom the camera pans to the window and the blinds are down, yet when Spike is outside looking up at Buffy's window the blinds can't be seen.

    • Goof: When Buffy runs back to her house after seeing Riley getting sucked on, her bedroom light is off. But in the outside shot of her house, the light is on.

    • Goof: When Spike is looking into Buffy's window when she and Riley are doin' it, the light is on. But Buffy and Riley don't actually have the lights on.

    • Goof: In the episode "Shadow" we see Riley getting bitten by a vampire on his neck. It's supposed to leave a mark like Buffy had when Angel had a taste, but in this episode we clearly see that he doesn't have a scratch or a mark on his neck on either side.

    • Goof: After Riley stakes Spike, you can clearly see that there is no hole in his shirt.

    • Goof: In the last shot of Buffy and the punching bag, after Riley walks in, the tape around Buffy's right hand disappears.

    • Nitpick: Buffy tells Xander that Riley is leaving at midnight; but Riley never told Buffy what time he was leaving, he only said "tonight". Also, Buffy seemed to know exactly how and from where Riley was leaving without being told.

  • Quotes

    • (Buffy urges Spike to turn around so she can get dressed)
Spike (Stand-offish): Yeah, like I'd care? (turns around and obviously resists temptation to look)

    • Spike: (about Buffy) The girl needs some monster in her man... and that's not in your nature... no matter how low you try to go.

    • Willow: She (Anya) bathes you?
Xander: Only in an erotic, Penthousey way, not in a sponge-bathy geriatric sort of...
Giles: Please! Stop, I beg of you.

    • Anya: Who ordered more chickens' feet? The ones we have aren't moving at all.
Xander: That's generally what happens when you cut them off the chicken.
Anya: I'm serious. Maybe we could do a... holiday promotion. One free with every purchase!
Giles: Oh, yes. Dear holiday memories. Merry tykes by the fire, enjoying their new Christmas chicken feet.
Willow: Holding them tight as they fall asleep. Painting their little toenails.

    • Anya: That's disturbing. You're emotionally scarred and will turn out badly.

    • Spike: I wouldn't be here if I didn't have a good reason. As usual, I'm here to help and… are you naked under there?
      Buffy: Get out.
Spike: I'm serious! I'm mean, not about the naked part, I mean –
Buffy: Get out, or I will drop you out, head first!

    • Xander: (to Anya) I've gotta say something, 'cause I don't think I've made it clear. I'm in love with you. Powerfully, painfully in love. The things you do, the way you think, the way you move... I get excited every time I'm about to see you. You make me feel like I've never felt before in my life. Like a man. I just thought you might wanna know.

    • Dawn: It's okay. You guys don't have to make a big deal for me. I'm only sleeping over here so Buffy and Riley can boink.
Xander: No, no, that's not it at all, they just need time to, um, be tender. Relax.
Anya: He's not very convincing is he?

    • Anya: I'm sorry, Willow. Thank you for making time in your busy life to come in here and get in the way of mine.

    • Spike: Sometimes I envy you so much it chokes me. And sometimes I think I got the better deal. To be that close to her and not have her. To be all alone even when you're holding her. Feeling her, feeling her beneath you. Surrounding you. The scent... No, you got the better deal.

    • Buffy: Yeah I'm sure he'll come over later looking for a little.... Bible Study.
Joyce: Well as long as you two are spending some quality time with the Lord.

  • Notes

    • This is Bailey Chase's (Graham Miller's) last appearance on the show.

    • This is Marc Blucas's last appearance on Buffy as a regular cast member.

    • Dedication: In memory of D.C. Gustafson.
According to Soap Opera Weekly, Gustafson was a Leadman on the first two seasons of the show and was apparently a close friend of Sarah Michelle Gellar's. He died in November after fighting cancer and AIDS.

  • Allusions

    • Xander: Only in an erotic, Penthousey way, not in a sponge-bathy geriatric sort of...

Penthouse magazine is a sister magazine to the adult Playboy by the same company, which depicts letters from readers of an erotic nature.

    • Xander: Dependable? What is he, State Farm?

State Farm is an insurance agency started in 1922. State Farm markets reliability as its main selling point, its slogan is, "Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there." It orignially specialized in auto insurance for farmers, but now offers other popular types of insurance, such as homeowners, life insurance, financial services and banking.

    • Major Ellis: We have a Code One in Belize.

Belize is a country in Central America located on the Caribbean Sea. It is a former British Colony that became independent in 1981.

    • Anya: Strawberry schnapps tastes just like real ice cream.

Schnapps is a generic name for a flavorful, usually clear alcoholic beverage made from fermented grain and flavored with various herbs or fruits. Schnapps can come in a variety of flavors including strawberry, peppermint, orange, butterscotch, and many others.

    • Anya: Well, we could play that game again - Life? That was fun.

The Game of Life is a classic board game now owned by Hasbro. It consists of between 2 and 10 players each getting a plastic car in which they can collect their "family" throughout the game, as they progress they collect cards with life events on them. The player with the most money at the end of the game wins.

    • Xander: So, what do you wanna do now, Dawnster? Keeping in mind that I won't chase you because I'm old and I'm stuffed full of moo goo gai starch.

This is a reference to Moo Goo Gai Pan, a Cantonese dish of chicken, mushrooms, vegetables, and spices sautéed together.

    • Title: Into the Woods
"Into the Woods" is a musical by Stephen Sondheim that brings together several popular fairy tale characters and plots.

    • Xander: (about Buffy) Yeah, when we went to deal with that vampire nest, she got all Rambo and torched the place.
Starring Sylvester Stallone as the eponymous Rambo, a mentally unstable Vietnam war veteran, this was a famously violent action movie trilogy consisting of 1982's First Blood, Rambo: First Blood Part II in 1985, and Rambo III in 1988.

    • Visual: Winter Solstice, Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, and Gurnenthar's Ascendance
Many religions have a celebration around the time of the Winter Solstice (the shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, which falls between 20-23 of December). The few mentioned on Giles' banner in the Magic Box were:

Christmas: A Christian festival celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, on December 25th.

Hanukkah: An 8-day Jewish celebration commemorating the victory of the Maccabees over Antiochus, the king of Syria, in the 2nd century BC. It begins on the 25th day of Kislev. This fell on December 22nd in 2000.

Kwanzaa: Created in 1966 by African-Americans to promote their needs, in response to Christmas, which they felt did not represent them. It is celebrated between December 26th and January 1st.

Gurnenthar's Ascendance is apparently made up.

    • Buffy: Are you planning to seduce me, Mr. Finn?
Likely allusion to The Graduate, a 1967 movie starring Anne Bancroft as an older woman and Dustin Hoffman as a college-aged guy. The most famous line from the movie is "Are you trying to seduce me, Mrs. Robinson?"
