Long live Dr. Gregory.

"Good"
Firstly, I love the opening teaser to this episode. Xander's "Wayne's World" fantasy about Buffy is very funny, much like Buffy's own fantasy about the aftermath of her brief relationship with Parker in season 4. Then there's the science teacher... The re-introduction(he was in "Witch") of Dr. Gregory is also nicely done . For once in a highschool based show we see a realistic reaction to a student that hasn't done her home-work. The scene where Dr. Gregory tells Buffy, "You have a first-rate mind and you can think on your feet. Imagine what you could accomplish..." is wonderfully written and refreshing. It's a credit to the show that it can take a character; give him 3 minutes of screen time and make it's audience actually care when he dies. It was great to see Buffy shedding tears after the discovery of his murder. Personally I really liked Dr. Gregory and was sad to see him go. Cruel writers.
So, Xander's dealing with teenage sexual urges and Buffy's lack of urge to do her insect home-work has be given a much needed rejuvenation. Throw a murdering, insect-lady and sexual predator into the mix, and you have Teacher's Pet: the fourth installment of season one.
Miss French, the predator in question, is a young, attractive sub teacher who's extra-curricular activities include eating insect sandwiches and getting young virgins to fertilise her insect eggs, before killing them. The innocent, virtuous damsel story gets a new twist as Xander and (the ridiculously named) Blaine become Insect Ladies victims. This episode is another example of a ridiculous main plot that somehow manages to make great television. Okay, Miss French is a bit cliched, the effects are a bit 1960's-horror movie but Teacher's Pet is still a very well-written and an entertaining edition to the Buffy series.
It is very funny for a start. Xander gets his first glimpse of Angel and is annoyed that he wasn't fully briefed on the mysterious one, "He's a very attractive man! How come *that* never came up?. He also has trouble remembering where his science class is as Miss French sends him into a baffling, testosterone-induced mess, "Oh God where is it?" he pleads to Buffy and Willow. Blaine is actually called Blaine Mall! That's just funny full-stop. And Giles make a phone call to his crazy friend Carlyle, "You were right all along, about everything ...Well, no, you weren't right about your mother coming back as a Pekingese". I find the fact that Giles has an insane friend called Carlyle (who has advanced degrees in "entomology mythology") amusing all by it's self.
Continuing with the funny, and Principal Flutie has a terrific scene with Buffy regarding the events of Dr. Gregory's death. "Don't say dead! Or decapitated, or decomposing, I'd stay away from D-words altogether". He also offers her some comfort, "I'm always here if you need a hug, (jumps back) but not a real hug! Because there's no touching, this school is sensitive to wrong touching". Watching this scene makes me sorely miss Flutie. The pain is only eased by the excellence that is Snyder. I think I 've got a thing for Sunnydale Principals. Wood also pleases me, again, in an entirely different way to his predecessors'
Angel's welcomed return, despite Xander's dislike, provides Buffy with info on a rather ambiguous "Folk-guy" vampire. He is in fact a common red-herring, and is there partly to keep the vampire theme of this vampire show running, and partly to reveal Miss French's true identity. God, he looks timelessly gorgeous in that white John Mcclain-style vest top (Angel, not Folk-guy). Finally, Buffy has an opinion on Angel that probably reflects what the entire female population of the world thinks. I think she's getting "lusty wrong feelings" at last!
Xander and Miss French get very personal as they relax on her sofa with martini's. However, Xander comes over all shy (or drugged) as he rejects the She-mantis's advances. After disturbing news from Blaine Mall (hah hah, makes me laugh every time!) that Miss French has "mated" with him the clock is ticking for Buffy and the gang to get to him in time. I'd like to comment that it is just as well that Miss French isn't Mr. French at this point because I very much doubt that this episode would have had the same feel if it had been Buffy and Cordelia in those cages. Cordelia saying that Mr. French "has mated with me" would be more disturbing than funny. Shows that sexual equality hasn't been entirely reached within society in these terms. Despite the unbelievable time concept that we are made to believe (Buffy manages to locate "Folk-guy" vampire *and* drag him back to Giles and Willow, during which time Miss French has made no progress in her attempt fertilise her eggs) the final show-down proves worthwhile. Dr. Gregory's memory is respected as Buffy takes his immortal advice and does her homework: recorded bat sonar makes Miss French's nervous system "go to hell". Our "high school lesson relates to this weeks plot" formula is cheesey but valid. Xander is left embarrassed, though not as much as Blaine Mall (poor guy, hasn't he got enough to deal with by having that appalling name!) as Willow informs them that Miss French "only went after virgins". Thus the real lesson being that teenage guys are not as ready for sex as they think they are. Or, have sex, but not with Teachers, especially ones you've only just met!
A great episode. Once again, I see a season one installment that has mixed feelings with the fans (scoring some pretty low marks). But once again, the episode in question is a lot more intelligent than it's main theme suggests. As for the "to be continued" egg appearance at the end. It was just a one-off gag that thankfully, they never tried again. Visit William Monaghan(Dr.Gregory)'s personal forum on tv.com for some cult-worshipping of this great character.
