Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee is a historical film directed by Yves Simoneau for HBO based on the book of the same name by Dee Brown that chronicles the hardships and battles between the Native Americans, more specifically the Sioux, and the United States people and government in the late nineteenth century. At a time when the American people were looking to the West for expansion and growth, the Native American tribes were struggling to keep their culture and their generational lands as theyre forced to sign US policies set to take everything from them. Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee focuses on three different perspectives. Charles Eastman (Adam Beach) is an Ivy-league educated Sioux doctor, often used as a poster child for living under the new rules, works with an American schoolteacher, Elaine Goodale (Anna Paquin) to help improve the life on the reservations. Legendary Sioux chief Sitting Bull (August Schellenberg) and Senator Henry Dawes (Aidan Quinn) find themselves on opposite sides of the Dawes Commission, a government pushed program set to take Sioux lands for the US people. The conflict escalates to a hopeless peak with the brutal massacre of hundreds of Sioux men, women, and children (including Sitting Bull) by the 7th Cavalry, led by George Custer (Colm Feore), at Wounded Knee.moreless
