Shrewsbury's goldsmith, Aurifaber, is robbed and left for dead, and the townspeople launch a witch-hunt against their prime suspect, Liliwin, a young travelling juggler and acrobat who performed at the wedding of the goldsmith's son. Luckily, Aurifaber recovers, but Liliwin, pursued by the mob, seeks sanctuary in Shrewsbury Abbey. Believing in his innocence, Cadfael sets himself to find the real robber.
