6/19/94The lord of a manor makes a new will, leaving his fortune to Shrewsbury Abbey instead of his stepson - and then the landowner dies suddenly, with the suspicion that he was killed, poisoned with an excess of one of Cadfael's herbal remedies. Cadfael is called in to investigate, and he is amazed to find that the dead man's wife is his own childhood sweetheart, whom he has not seen for forty years. 6/12/94A great wedding is about to take place at the Abbey. Godfrid Piccard, the guardian of Iveta de Massard, a beautiful young Shrewsbury heiress, has arranged for her to marry the elderly Baron Huon de Domville against her wishes. Meanwhile, Iveta is loved by Joscelyn, so that when Domville disappears without a trace just before the wedding, he becomes the prime suspect. Domville proves to have been killed, and Cadfael searches for his killer, finding several suspects with possible motives. He is very curious about a mysterious leper called Lazarus who has recently arrived at Shrewsbury's leper hospital.moreless

6/5/94Shrewsbury's goldsmith, Aurifaber, is robbed and left for dead, and the townspeople launch a witch-hunt against their prime suspect, Liliwin, a young travelling juggler and acrobat who performed at the wedding of the goldsmith's son. Luckily, Aurifaber recovers, but Liliwin, pursued by the mob, seeks sanctuary in Shrewsbury Abbey. Believing in his innocence, Cadfael sets himself to find the real robber. While he investigates, and with Liliwin still out of circulation, a body is found floating in the River Severn, so that Cadfael is now dealing with a murderer.moreless

5/29/94After an adventurous (and far from monastic) youth, Brother Cadfael has settled down to the quiet religious life as herbalist at Shrewsbury Abbey before dramatic events bring him to the fore.
King Stephen captures a nearby castle after a long siege and gives orders for the ninety-four rebels who had resisted him to be hanged. Monks of Shrewsbury help with the burial arrangements, but in counting the bodies Cadfael finds they have one too many to deal with, concluding that the extra man was murdered.
The king grants Cadfael permission to investigate, but allows him only four days to solve the crime. What he finds is a tale of missing treasure centring on the daughter of Godith, the castle's owner, and a local man called Hugh Beringar.
