A great wedding is about to take place at the Abbey. Godfrid Piccard, the guardian of Iveta de Massard, a beautiful young Shrewsbury heiress, has arranged for her to marry the elderly Baron Huon de Domville against her wishes. Meanwhile, Iveta is loved by Joscelyn, so that when Domville disappears without a trace just before the wedding, he becomes the prime suspect. Domville proves to have been killed, and Cadfael searches for his killer, finding several suspects with possible motives.
