There's very little detective work in this episode, or rather, it's dealt with very quickly. The actual themes concern the private life of Cagney and Lacey. Christine's difficulty with men who can't accept her job gives her an extra dimension. There are even some hints at the alcohol problem she will develop later on. (Was that planned?) Mary Beth's story might be predictable, Tyne Daly's performance in the final scenes makes it work. The unique qualities of this show at their best.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (1)

    • Cagney mentions a niece in the baby clothes store. Up until a few episodes ago she hadn't had any contact with her only sibling for years. Something must have happened since the end of 'Matinee'.

  • QUOTES (4)

    • Harvey Jr: (disappointed that his mother brought home a baby rather than a computer) What's its name?
Mary Beth Lacey: I don't know.
      Michael: How about Atari?
Mary Beth Lacey: Better for a boy.

    • Lacey: I hate to discourage you about a man, but maybe h's the wrong on for you.
Cagney: Maybe everyone's the wrong one for me. Well, it must be me. I mean, if enough people tell you you're drunk, lie down!

    • Josh: You can't live in the gutter just because you work there.
Cagney: What's that supposed to mean?
Josh: Stop taking it home with you.
Cagney: Where the hell am I supposed to leave it?

    • Lacey: (talking about the abandoned baby) She's perfect; she just can't hear.
