Still trying to finds its feet halfway through the first (real) season, the shows goes slightly off the rails. At its best, the show always told an interesting story from a female perspective. Here we get a Mary Beth Lacey story, the tale of a career woman who breaks down under the dual pressure of work and family. Other episodes dealt with the issue better, often just in short scenes in between the scenes that pushed the plot along. I find it hard to believe that Lacey, the most sensible person in the precinct, would break down like this. To keep Cagney busy, a secondary plot about disappearing drugs at a hospital is just plain silly, an excuse to put Cagney in a nun's habit. The balance between comedy and tragedy hasn't been found here.
