What do you know, following up an excellent pilot episode is another excellent second episode. Once again strong writing, hilarious dialogue, and just some well developed characters steal the show. Seriously was the writer an award winning comedian before this? Hank's blog just gave laugh after laugh, and then his little awkward situation at the dinner table where it seemed like a barrel of "everything's going wrong" was being unleashed and no one could find the lid to close it, but at the same time was just top notch hilarious. Then he makes use of it with his hook up, and to end it smoothly, above all of his cocky and carefree remarks, he is reminded of how badly his life is going. All of this wrapped in one episode, not hard to see why this episode was so awesome.
After receiving encouragement from all sides, Hank starts his blogging gig at Hell-A Magazine. Plus, under the guise of inviting Hank to family dinner at her and Bill's (Damian Young) house, Karen sets up Hank with her friend Sonja (Paula Marshall). At dinner, Becca reveals how Hank met Karen.
this episode was very good and funny the part at the dinner table was great and the part where Hank vomits on the expensive painting made me really laugh, cantwai to see next weeks there was a preview after this episode and it look really funny.
I felt sorry for poor Hank at the end of the episode.

A good second episode... after the first one, this didnt quit live up to my expectations... but still high class/well written po... ehh I meant erotic fun ;)
Hank is still hitting the rock bottom, and it really is this rock bottom what makes the show so interesting... Hank is edgy becouse of his missfortune... What I am afraid of is the moment, ones he puts his live together I fear this show might loose its apeal very fast... so I hope the writters won't aim for this too soon. What I dissliked about this episode is, that Hank actually doesnt have to do anything to get laid... the chicks jump into his bad right away! I mean, okay, the guy is handsome and quit famous... but this whole thing seems to me quit unreal, he doesnt even try to get laid. Even for the potential lost of some nudity, I would prefer some reallity. But whatever... I thing the one thing that makes me watch this show, besides well written/acted characters and good dialogues with a lot of punchlines is the nudity. So as long as they keep the scripts high level, I can forgive them the lack of realizm in Hanks sex-live, or maybe this is the way it is in HelL.A.
After I watched the first episode I hoped for more from this one while at the same time I knew there were a lot of uncertainties in the storyline. It's a paradoxal comment, I know, but the thing is that Hank is still too ethereal. What made him the way he is? Karen's betrayal only? But one of their friends says Hank is trying to "get his **** together since they met"... Either way, during this episode more than once I felt its storyline wasn't quite defined. Furthermore, what is its main purpose/theme? Nudity, sex, etc.? I hope for more, but as I see it more and more people aren't "buying" the show from episode to the next.
I will, though, stay tuned to find out if there will be a development of sorts. Stay with me if you like.
Hank accepts the offer from Hell-A Magazine and gets invited by his daughter to a what turns out to be a very akward dinner with a suprise ending for Hank.
I loved this show alrady after the first episode and this didn't make me change my mind. Hank says what he wants and does what he wants and thats why I like him. The dinner was so funny and it almost made me feel uncomfortable. I'm very interested how the Hank-Mia situation is going to end up and what will happen if Bill and Karen find out.
David Duchovny is a great and extreamly funny actor, I liked him in X-files but I didn't know that he could be this funny. The whole cast is excellent but David stands out from the crowd.
The end was very interesting. Hank found out that Bill was the owner of Hell-A Magazine and probably the reason why he got the job.
the standard format for a episode of californication is clear, hanks has sex, hank feels bad, de rest try to help but make it worse. So what happens well first he meets a porn star (gets phone number) then there is the job offer, for the blog, he does not want to do it but he does not have much choice. he meets with the editor, she convinces him, but in a rare moment does not want to have sex with him, so he calls the pornstar. Then that goed wrong, as the pornstar has a crying baby.
so what's next, a dinner party, a we remember from the last episode hank is not, repeat not a good guest, and this dinner is yep at his ex with her fiance and his agent. The tone is set when hank arrives, bottle in hand (for own use) and bill arrives to see hank talking to 16 year old (it is confirmed so no more sex till season 3) in a tiny bikini, bill goes all dad on hank and the go to the others, once again somebody has set up a date for hank, won't they learn? in this case it is sonja and hank has a very bad bad meal as mia and sonja both start to grope him, at least he does a hank and insults sonja with a scientology joke, which she is.
after dinner sonja and hank go to the master bedroom, they smoke pot, she takes of her clothes and asks him if he likes her body. A tricky question but one that hank answers well so the get going doggy style.
Hank knocks bill new painting of the wall and just as he is trying to hang it back on the wall , karen comes in with the rest of the guests. Hank uses the painting as cover but then vomits al over it, followed by sonja who vomits all over karens bed,ah the smell of booze and drug induced vomit that gives your house that special smell
as hank is leaving he meets mia who is just comming back from a boyfriend, they talk and for the 2nd episode she stuns him by informing him that hank has just accepted a job for a magazine owned by bill
we end with bill at the airport dreaming of karen, looking at planes, are they going to his beloved new york?
