Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) was a writer and journalist who won Pulitzer and Novel Prizes during his career. Jackie is referring to Hank's effort to help her with her writing by rejoining his class.

- Hank: (paying the stripper for Charlie's lap dance) This is for Ralph Baldo Emerson. This is a reference to Ralph Waldo Emerson, an 1800s poet and essayist. Emerson was a controversial figure late in his life because of his anti-slavery views. Hank is making a joke about Charlie's baldness.

- Hank: (to saleswoman) I think I see someone over there in the market for a $250 Jethro Tull T-shirt. And by the way, I was at that show, I payed all of ten bucks for the shirt. Jethro Tull is a British rock band that was created in 1967. The band was most active in the 1970s and 80s and has experimented with a variety of music styles over the years.

- Hank: (waiting at the clothing store) Come on, Becca, you're killing me softly here. Killing me Softly is a 2002 movie based on a novel by Nicci French that was published three years earlier. Hank's quote is also a possible reference to the 1971 Charles Fox and Norman Gimbel song "Killing Me Softly with His Song."
