Call for Help

Show Summary

Call for Help is a show that helps you understand technology - "how to choose it, use it, abuse it, and eventually lose it". This one hour show is designed to help viewers, from the hardcore to the novice, get the most out of their technology and keep up-to-date on the latest tech news, products, and trends. Call for Help centers around answers to viewer calls, but also includes fun tech tidbits, updates on the latest fashions (and threats) in technology as well as product reviews. The show often features visits from experts in the various aspects of tech. Regular guests include Pixelcorp's Alex Lindsay, security expert Steve Gibson, Photoshop wizard Greg Danbrooke, and many others, such as gadget lover Dick DeBartolo. Two of the show's own staff members, Mike Lazazzera and Sean Carruthers, also make regular on-screen contributions to the show. Host Leo Laporte has remarked that the show has now become a lot like the original Screensavers, which longtime TechTV fans remember fondly. Call For Help originally began on TechTV in May 1998. Cancelled six years later, in May 2004, following the TechTV/G4 merger (considered by purists to be "the end of TechTV"), viewer response led to the show being resurrected in August 2004 by G4TechTV Canada. Former host Laporte was happy to return to the new show, to be joined by new co-hosts Andy Walker and Monica Litonjua (Litonjua soon left the show and was succeeded by web expert Amber MacArthur). Since its return, over 400 original episodes have been broadcast. The show is now filmed in Toronto, and initially only aired in Canada, but in February of 2005 returned to screens in Australia. Fans of the show were shocked when, on the 31st of August, 2005, co-host Walker announced he was leaving the show due to a proposed contract renewal that would see him earning "substantially less" than in his first year at the show. He was not replaced by a new co-host, and the show continued on with one less on the team.In late 2006 co-host Amber MacArthur announced she was leaving the show; moving on to a journalistic position at Canada's CityNews. She has been succeeded a several new co-hosts, including GeekBrief.tv's Cali Lewis. Also in August 2005, American fans, who had been crying out for over a year to see the show back, finally had their patience rewarded when the program returned to G4 in the US. G4 proceeded to air a batch of approximately 60 episodes over the proceeding months, albeit at less-than-glamorous early morning time slots, before once again pulling the plug on the show at the end of 2005. The show continued in 2006 in both Canada and Australia however, and in mid-06 became available to American fans to buy on Google Video. In November 2006, Laporte announced on his radio show that the production of Call for Help was to be moved to Vancouver. Nogotiations between G4TechTV owner Rogers Communications and Greedy Productions allowed the show to "continue" under the new name In the Lab with Leo. Call for Help ended on April 7, 2007 and In the Lab with Leo began airing April 23, 2007. (In the Lab with Leo has since been cancelled after 195 episodes) "Remember, if you have a problem with your personal confuser, don't whine, don't moan, don't yelp... Just Call for Help!" Current Editor's note: When I attained the TV.com guide for C4H, it originally began with the second incarnation of the show although it had listed the main cast from the show as it aired from 1998. I've decided to leave the current listing as is until I have found much more information for the original show. These episodes will be listed as 2.0. When I find enough accurate information on the show (too much false info out there) We'll start adding to the first (and funnier) show.moreless

  • Why you stop airing it? I still have computer problems!

    9.2
The good ol' days when TechTV was awesome and G4 was nonexistant. The days when T.V. actually had awesome shows running. Now it's all a mere dream...and i'm pissed.

Call for Help was one of the best shows that you could go and get answers for all your computer troubles. Chris Perello (later changed to Leo Laporte) and Cat Shwartz really sent out a message to all computer novices and making their knowledge on computers even bigger. Call in, send email, anything to get your question answered on the air! Now thats a mere dream. TechTV joined with G4 and gave all their good shows up for crappy shows.moreless
  • I really want this great show Back

    9.9
This show should still be on in the us. its not fair that new episodes are there and the us markets are too dumb to show them. This show helps the computer illiterate people like me so much. I learned a lot from this show. The hosts, especially LEo Laporte were great. They always have great topics and new gagets to show and show you how to use them. Everyon e was able to learn something from this show. There was nothing i hated or disliked about the show other than the fact its nno longer on. It needs to come back PLEASEmoreless
  • To be a teenager in this day in age is hard enough yet alone trying to bring up our kids now. Home and Away gives that sense of confidence to be able to cope and understand what can and could happen to any kids or adults in real life.moreless

  • Up to Date Needed Info for All

    10
Just a Great Guy..Leo Laporte. I would never watch if he were not present, because of his common sense approach of the subject matter. Leo should be in the "Computer" Hall of Fame! Please give him a raise and maybe some stock shares too. He helps me keep up to date with new tech too!
