Jenny meets Mary, a young Irish girl who is heavily pregnant and has ran away from a life of prostitution that she had been forced into by a man she loved. Jenny tries to help her in every way she can, though it might not be enough. Meanwhile a new midwife arrives at Nonnatus House, Chummy Browne, who is quite the fish out of the water. Though very eager to start her career as a midwife she makes slow progress, caused by her only passing her exam by a hair and her inability to ride a bicycle, which lands everyone in a spot of difficulty. Chummy struggles to show her worth.
