      • Scott Joplin, who was born into the family of a freed slave near Texarkana on the Texas-Arkansas border, early in life began playing the highly developed black music of the time. After moving to St. Louis, then going to the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago, he settled briefly in Sedalia, Mo. During that period, Joplin wrote most of the music that established his reputation as an American genius, including the piece that earned him nationwide fame, "Maple Leaf Rag."
