  • Beware the Cantonetti! Albert makes a public spectacle of himself.

This preposterously entertaining story set amongst the arty types of 1930s London builds to an intriguingly drawn-out conclusion. Campion and Inspector Oates work out who the murderer is, but have no proof to convict him; so Campion, ever one to rush in where angels fear to tread, offers himself up as the mad killer's next victim. The method employed is pretty cunning and our hero is saved only at the last possible moment, thanks to Oates's considerable perspicacity. Peter Davison was perfectly cast as the moon-faced sleuth who's so much brighter than his opponents suppose, but Shaughan Seymour competes vigorously for the acting honours as an aesthete of truly monstrous ego.moreless
