  • When Paul Brande is murdered, horribly, Campion's friend Mike Barnabas seems the likely killer, given his unusually close friendship with Brande's unhappy wife. Campion sets about clearing his name.

Almost the first thing you see in this episode is a newspaper headline announcing that Neville Chamberlain's trip to Munich has not been widely praised (World War II broke out a year later), and this is a clue to us that this will be a more serious, less eccentric Campion story than usual. The method used to kill Paul Brande is particularly nasty, and Christopher Benjamin's brief, but telling, appearance as a deeply unpleasant coroner is a very sharp sketch of judicial sadism. It does seem wildly unlikely, though, that a coroner's court could come to a verdict quite so blatantly prejudicial.moreless
