  • In setting out to clear his friend's name, Campion becomes deeply interested in the manuscript of an unknown play by Congreve - which may be worth a fortune.

    8.0
With the 1930s setting rather later in the decade than in previous episodes - and nearer to the forthcoming war - it's appropriate that the tone of this story should be more serious than was usual in this series. The attempts on Campion's life are rather suspenseful and look authentically dangerous, whilst the revelation of the secret perversity of a supporting character is done in a way to raise the hackles on the back of one's neck. The genial, rather quaint atmosphere of earlier "Campion" segments is largely banished, at least until the somewhat odd final scene; it's all very well done, but not as easy to enjoy as earlier shows.moreless
