  • Martina McBride joins the Idols for Country music week.

    Canadian Idol goes country... NOT!

First of all, the songs that the Top 5 sang were NOT country songs. They were pop songs, and I think that three of the five were Elvis songs. Elvis was not a country artist. He was a lot of things, but not country. Eva did a Dolly Parton song, and she's a country artist, but the song that Eva did was ~not~ country, it was pop. And Steffi did "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'" which just isn't country either. I don't know how Canadian Idol dares to call this a country music week. I was expecting artists like they mentioned in the beginning of the episode like Loretta Lynne and Hank Williams or Hank Snow. But there was none of that, and that's why I've given the episode the 7.0 rating, and the title "Alternate Reality". Because in the reality that I live in, Elvis just isn't country, baby!

As far as the singing goes, well... the guys were okay, I guess, and Eva was a little weak. Steffi wasn't at all sexy and sultry, as Farley said; in my opinion, she was STILTED! I'm writing this after the fact, but even at the time of the show, I said that she wasn't that good, and of the five, she was definitely the weakest.

The show opened with a short "week in the life" segment from the mostly absent Elena. We all miss Jon so much more because of her performances.

Now, on to the music portion of this review. The singing order was: Eva; Tyler; Craig; Steffie; and lastly Chad. Not one of them sang a true country song. They all sang songs from the pop charts instead of the country charts. So many missed opportunities, but then, Idol is not a singing competition.

Eva didn't wow me or anything. Although she needs to earn the right to dance in the crowd, and that time has still not come. She's still singing to the cameras instead of the audience. I guess that's okay since it is the people at home voting, but still.

Eva: Stop singing to the cameras and just sing.

Tyler is a country boy. Many people don't believe me, but he is. A lot of people can belt out rock music, but he could be as big as Carrie Underwood in at least Canada if he'd clue in that he can do country.

Tyler: Be true to your country roots.

Craig is Michael Jackson. He could be huge, but you just know it's going to end with a monkey and a lawsuit! But seriously. When the Top 22 started, I didn't like him, but I pegged him for our next Canadian Idol. Week after week he has proven me wrong. If he goes home on Tuesday, the only bad thing would be that we'd have Chad for another week.

Craig: Time to go home before the Top 2.

Oh, and did I mention that the song dragged and had no feeling? Okay, well I did now.

Steffi did a Broadway song and should not make the top 2. I think that says it all. As good as she is, she belongs in musicals and not on the pop charts. True. Word.

Steffi: Beg your fans to stop voting and then get the first ticket to New York. When you get there, you will own Broadway.

Chad finished off the show in more ways than one. Like Craig, the only down side to Chad getting booted tomorrow would be that Craig would be here another week.

Chad: Just go home. Spend some time with your family. Find a record deal, and put together a record for your fans. You are not our Canadian Idol.

Overall, an okay performance. Still much better than anything I heard last season on American Idol. But my mind is now 100% fixed on an Eva versus Tyler showdown for the crown, with our second female Idol winner in a row. No opinions changed.
