"Cannon" really loved this kind of show - small town under the thumb of a group of crooks, until Cannon rides in and saves the day. Sometimes it works, but not in the case of "Fool's Gold." The episode's biggest sin is not giving William Conrad much to do. Sure, he gets some good lines, but aside from an all-too-brief shootout, most of the time Cannon is on the receiving end of intimidation and doesn't get to dole out his usual plus-sized dose of justice.

Conrad is always interesting to watch, but episodes where Cannon is less of of an observer are always better. If the action had been upped just a little bit, "Fool's Gold" might have been better. As it is, it's a painfully slow episode.moreless
