    -- The Beatles, "Get Back"

When we last left our heroes, they had been duped into competing in a Videolympics to determine the rulership of Videoland. Despite winning the events, Mother Brain and the bad guys used the cover of the games to snag the Three Sacred Treasures of Mount Icarus to gain Unlimited Power and send our heroes plummeting into the Warp Zone to Oblivion.

Our heroes land on an asteroid in Oblivion, the center of the universe where all warp zones intersect. To organize their search out, they tie themselves to a hub with some fishing line. Simon finds his way into a pot of stew being cooked by some unfriendly natives. Lana finds the warp to third base in what is supposedly Yankee Stadium, scores on a shallow pop fly to center, then warps back out when she realizes that it isn't the Mount Icarus Coliseum. (Or at least the umpire says it's Yankee Stadium -- the creatures sitting in the stands look a lot prettier than your typical Yankees fans.)

Kid Icarus finds the Coliseum, which is in disarray. It turns out that even though our heroes think they've only been gone a few minutes, they've actually been gone for a full week. I guess Oblivion is a relative term. They learn that the natives have been enslaved by King Hippo and Eggplant Wizard, while Dr. Wily has taken the Three Sacred Treasures with him to conquer Megaland. Only two worlds conquered? Apparently Unlimited Power is a relative term as well. Kid Icarus announces that with a sacred bow, fire arrows and a protective crystal (three of the power items in the Kid Icarus game), he can counter the power of the Three Sacred Treasures. It is decided that Kevin, Lana, Mega Man and Duke will head off to Megaland to hold off Dr. Wily long enough for Simon and Kid Icarus to recover the three power items from Medusa.

Kevin, Lana and Mega Man make their way into the lab of Dr. Light, Mega Man's creator. Dr. Light tells them that they'll have to conquer the six robot bosses from the Mega Man game to get to Dr. Wily and offers them the use of his new robot Garbageman, which they refuse.

They decide to head off to the Cutsman stage first. Kevin wants to leave Lana behind, but Lana grabs Kevin's zapper and declares that "my father taught me to fight for my freedom, Captain N. I can take care of myself". Makes you wonder why she didn't pack her own heat.

They arrive at the beginning of the Cutsman stage in a Mega Man-type pixelated plop, climb up a few ladders, shoot a few things, then Kevin gets hit and falls down. Somehow in this world, they all share a communal health meter, conveniently displayed on Mega Man's forearm.

Anyway, they make it to the top of a building with about 2.5 bars left, where the Bigeye robot awaits. Kevin and Mega Man's blasts fail to damage the robot, which promptly squashes everyone flat.

They rematerialize back at the beginning of the stage. Apparently they get multiple lives in Megaland; not sure if this happens anywhere else in Videoland. I stopped trying to figure this out a while ago. Kevin casually mentions that it took him 50 tries to get to Cutsman the first time. Mega Man says that they only get three lives here. Not very reassuring, oh mighty Game Master.

Meanwhile, Simon and Kid Icarus make their way to the top of Mount Icarus to try to recover the power items from Medusa. In their way are Eggplant Wizard and King Hippo, who are relaxing in a hot tub. Simon disguises himself as a plumber, and King Hippo asks them to fix the tub 'cause it isn't hot enough. The following dialogue is worth printing:

Simon: We'll have it fixed for you in a jiffy, won't we, Shrimpicus?

Kid Icarus: Whatever you say, Dopius Maximus.

Simon heats the tub up to geyser-like levels, and he and Kid Icarus sneak past them and into Medusa's lair.

Back in Megaland, the others are making their way back through the Cutsman board. This time, Kevin lures Bigeye into jumping off the rooftop. Lana rushes over to embrace Kevin. Mega Man tells them to stop macking on each other and finish the board. A not-too-terrible cover of "Danger Zone" plays as they make their way through a maze and Kevin obliterates mini-versions of Iceman, Fireman, Elecman, Bombman and Gutsman in succession and reach Cutsman's lair. Again Kevin and Mega Man's blasters don't do anything, so Duke runs around Cutsman, and Cutsman obliterates himself with his own blades.

Back on Mount Icarus, Simon and Kid Icarus reach Medusa's lair. Passing by a bunch of stone soldiers, they see the power items -- and Medusa's shadow approaching. They cover their eyes, and Kid Icarus manages to find his ways to the power items. Meanwhile Simon gets seduced by Medusa's voice. Simon takes off his goggles and takes a look at Medusa, and promptly turns to stone. She tries to do the same to Kid Icarus, but Kid Icarus holds up the magic mirror and Medusa turns herself to stone. Wait, I thought the third power item was the protective crystal, not the mirror shield? Whatever. By this point in the cartoon series, it's pretty obvious Jeffrey Scott wasn't an expert in any of these video games. Simon and the other stone soldiers revert back to normal, and the soldiers set out to retake Mount Icarus while Simon and Kid Icarus head for Megaland posthaste.

Somehow in 5 minutes Kevin, Lana, Mega Man and Duke have managed to conquer the other five bosses and break into Dr. Wily's headquarters. Dr. Wily reveals that with the Unlimited Power provided by the Three Sacred Treasures, he is able to revive his robots. Again, Unlimited Power just isn't what it used to be. Anyway, they decide they can't fight all six robots at one and try to retreat. Fortunately, Simon and Kid Icarus arrive just in time. Fireman shoots a fireball at our heroes, which Simon absorbs with the mirror shield. Kid Icarus shoots the fire arrow at the Three Sacred Treasures. It misses and bounces al over the place, but Lana takes off her tiara and redirects it on course. The six robot bosses vaporize and our heroes advance on Dr. Wily. Dr. Wily turns his chair into some sort of spacecraft and tries to run everyone over, but Kevin hits the pause button, tinkers with the controls a bit, and Wily's ship careens out of the lair and into a warp back to Metroid.

The soldiers of Mount Icarus have finished liberating their land and deposit King Hippo and Eggplant Wizard into a warp back to Metroid. Kevin and Lana then appear in MB's magic mirror to rub salt in the wound. Ouch.

    ------

Overall, this is a nice, action-packed yet light-hearted episode. If you can get past the inaccuracies in the video games, it's an enjoyable view. All of our heroes do something constructive in the episode, and Simon and Kid Icarus end up being pretty hilarious when paired together.moreless

    • When Kevin and Lana call Mother Brain at the end of the episode, the shoulders on Lana's shirt are pink rather than white.

    • After defeating Cut Man, Kevin remarks that compared to the other robot masters, Cut Man is a wimp. He seems to be forgetting that they actually destroyed the other five robot masters (Elec Man, Bomb Man, Guts Man, Ice Man, and Flame Man) on the way into Cut Man's chamber, and they were all much easier to defeat.

    • The Robot Masters are completely off-model here. Also, Cut Man is mistakenly called Cuts Man.

  • QUOTES (6)

    ADD QUOTES
    • Dr. Light: Mega Man! I'm so glad you could come. And you must be Captain N! I've heard a great deal about you! Kevin: You're the dude who built all those wicked robots - Cut Man, Ice Man, Elec Man... Dr. Light: And don't forget Fire Man, Guts Man, and Bomb Man. They were all quite useful, you know, until Dr. Wily reprogrammed them for his destructive ends. And now, he's back again, and using the power of the Three Sacred Treasures to take over our world! Kevin: Don't worry, Dr. Right, the Mega Man game is my specialty. I'll zap Dr. Wily into warp factor ten!

    • Simon: What perfectly dreadful statues. Medusa has lousy taste in art.

    • Mega Man: There's no time to waste! We've got to mega move it! Kevin: Well, I wouldn't call hugging a princess a waste of time.

    • Simon: Uh, on the other hand, why worry about a neck when you've got an entire body to think of?!

    • Dr. Light: I've been working on a new robot that may be able to help you. I call him. . . Garbage Man! He's programmed to trash the other robots. Watch! (Garbage Man starts eating the computer.) No! Stop! That's my computer you're trashing!

    • Simon: But Medusa's even uglier than Mother Brain! One look at her face turns a man to stone! Kevin: Look on the bright side, Simon. You'd make a very handsome statue. Simon: Oh, yes! I would, wouldn't I?

  • NOTES (6)

    ADD NOTES
    • Original airing of the episode had Kenny Loggin's song Danger Zone playing during The corridor scenes with the first five robots. The DVD version of the episode as well as some airings replace the song with an instrumental version of Mega Move.

    • Episode released on DVD titled: Captain N The Game Master The Complete Series.

    • In this episode as in the rest of Captain N, Dr. Light is refered to as "Dr. Right." This is because, at the time, there was a bit of confusion on the American end as to which the name actually was, mainly because the Japanese sound for L is an R sound, thus "Right" and "Light" are actually the same word. You will find this confussion early on in the Mega Man games itself (up until Mega Man 3): Dr. Light is called Light, Right, and Wright, depending on where you look. Another example of this occurs in Mega Man 2 with robot master Crash Man. In the Mega Man 2 booklet, he is refered to as "Clash Man." Since Captain N was none-too strict about video game accuracy to begin with (just look at those robot masters!), and since the English games clearly called him Dr. Right first, this is the name they used; although since then, it has been decided that Light is the actual correct translation.

    • This episode is a continuation of the previous episode: Videolympics.

    • In Kid Icarus, Medusa the Goddess of Darkness is the main villian from Kid Icarus besides Eggplant Wizard. In the game, Pit/Kid Icarus had to gather three treasures (the Mirror Shield, the Arrow of Light, and the Wings of Pegasus) to defeat her and free Palutena the Goddess of Light. In the game, she is allied by Uranos the God of the Sky (member of Mother Brain's team in the Captain N comics), Erinus the God of Revenge, and other beings from the Underworld.

    • Animated debut of Dr. Thomas Xavier Light, the Robot Masters from the first Mega Man game, and Medusa (the one from Kid Icarus).
