Captain Scarlet

Show Summary

Gerry Anderson's 1967 TV series, 'Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons' was remade into 'Gerry Anderson's New Captain Scarlet' in 2005. Captain Scarlet is part of a small but very high tech international defense organization, Spectrum, which code-names its commissioned officers (lieutenant and above) with color names. Its base of operations is Skybase, a flying aircraft carrier that is the home of the Angels, an all-female four-member fighter squadron. In the series, a bad decision by Captain Black incites a low-level war between Earth's defenders and the Mysterons, a very advanced non-corporeal race on Mars. The Mysterons can rearrange matter and duplicate humans, although only dead ones. After their first encounter with the Mysterons, Scarlet and Black were duplicated and became essentially unkillable, leading to the description "the Indestructible Captain Scarlet." Scarlet broke free of their control and fights on the side of Spectrum and Earth.

Instead of marionette puppets as used in his previous Supermarionation process for shows such as Thunderbirds, Supercar and Stingray, motion-capture of live actors was used to animate computer-generated characters, a process Anderson dubbed Hypermarionation. The production cost $30 million for 26 episodes.

The program was never shown in the US and has only been released on Region 2 DVDs, which are incompatible with US DVD players.
