Episode Summary

EDIT
The Frost Line Outer Space Defence System is endangered by the Mysterons when they destroy a maintenance truck, murdering its engineer/driver in the process, as a cover to infiltrate the defence bases sited in Northern Canada, where the Mysteronised engineer intends to proceed in removing all oxygen from the bases' self-contained atmosphere.

With bases' "Red Deer" and "Cariboo" already taken down, the next base in the ring, "Big Bear", is the Mysterons' final target. But if the base is attacked also, the commander-in-chief of the defence network plans to commence a vengeful missile strike on Mars, where the main Mysteron complexes are established.

Colonel White desperately wants to prevent this from happening, and so, he assigns Lieutenant Green to his first off-base, "in-the-field" assignment, along with Captain Scarlet, to evaluate just how the bases are being cut off, and stop the maintenance engineer from triggering off a global disaster.moreless

  • Quite a mystery...

An interesting take on the Mysterons' attack strategy this time as, opposed to blowing stuff up, they sneak around and quietly kill the military people at the bases. This leads to quite a long spell of investigative work on the part of Spectrum. Speaking of Spectrum, it was nice to see Lieutenant Green finally get some action other than zipping up and down the control room on his chair. His hat colour doesn't match his uniform though, which is odd. I love the shack that the SPV is hidden in, but I wonder how they get it back together afterwards. I would have liked to see the maintenance truck explode in either of it's crashes, but apart from that, this episode is great, as are the snow covered sets and vehicles used throughout.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (12)

    • The Score: Spectrum saves Frostline. Spectrum: 3 Mysterons: 2.

    • Mysteron Reconstructions: Eddie, the maintenance man and his truck (lost in avalanche twice).

    • Spectrum Losses: 1 SPV crashed.

    • Collateral Damage: 250 men die at Red Deer. 71 die at Cariboo.

    • When Blue tells White that Frost Line is locking them out, Captain Scarlet's communication light on the colonel's desk is lit, but he wasn't talking to him at the time.

    • At the beginning of the episode, the maintenance truck crashes of the cliff but doesn't explode (as is usual for Captain Scarlet vehicles), yet at the end of the episode when the Mysteron copy of the truck does the same, it goes up in flames. As the two trucks were identical and were both carrying liquid oxygen, both should have exploded when they crashed.

    • It seems odd that a trained soldier like the guard at the Big Bear Base wouldn't be able to recognize Spectrum when he saw it given that both the SPV that pulled up and the two men that got out were covered in Spectrum insignia.

    • Colonel White says he's sure that if another Frost Line base had been attacked General Ward would have launched his missles at Mars. However, there's nothing to be sure about; Ward had told him exactly that would happen earlier.

    • Scarlet says that to enter one of the Frost Line domes they should go through the airlock. However as they are "sealed domes", as stated earlier, that would be only way in short of blowing a hole in the wall or crashing into it with the SPV.

    • General Ward asks Colonel White if the Mysterons are serious in their threats. Surely a man in his position would have heard about the kidnapping of the World President, the attempted destruction of London and the killing of the Director General of the United Asian Republic.

    • The maintenance truck was supposed to be carrying liquid oxygen, but as it crashed off the cliff it could be seen to contain a large plastic bag.

    • Captain Scarlet fires at a mountain to create an avalanche which causes Eddie's maintenance truck to topple down into a crashing explosion. He fires one shot, and a shot of the mountain being damaged follows, then he fires another two shots, and the shot which follows this shows the two damage effects, and the shot quickly changes to the snow featuring all numbers of splits, lines and cracks which weren't seen in the previous shot, even though it's taken from the exact same camera angle.

  • QUOTES (2)

    • Mysterons: This is the voice of the Mysterons. We know that you can hear us Earthmen. Our next strike is imminent. We will show you how weak you really are. Within the next four hours, we will destroy key links in your Frost Line Outer Space Defense System. We will be avenged.

    • Colonel White: Believe me, before this day is out, you'll need all the help you can get.
