In the centre of London, the capital of England, a double police-escorted transporter, carrying a nuclear explosive device, built for civilian use, seemingly goes out of control, shaking of its' motor guards and its driver regaining consciousness in a back alley. The transporter, now in the remote-controlled possession of the Mysterons, has been hidden in an under construction car park. Captains Scarlet and Blue are assigned to investigate the drivers' mysterious discovery, that the famous Big Ben clock struck 13 times, which may be a clue to finding the transporter, before it destroys the whole of Central London. However, the driver's founding's are more than unreliable due to his perplexed state of memory.moreless

While this episode has some great vehicle scenes, the transporter going out of control, the SPV/transporter drive through London and, of course, the explosion at the end, it always confused me as a child when they were taking about Big ben striking thirteen. It's only recently having watched the episode again to write the recap of it for this site that I've come to fully understand how the radio and Big Ben combined give 13 chimes. It's quite a complicated plot point for a childrens show, but not an unwelcome one.

This episode isn't as action packed as other episodes despite the numerous vehicle scenes, but it's still a very good installment. Of course, Scarlet getting blown up is always a plus.moreless

    • The Score: Spectrum saves London. Spectrum: 2 Mysterons: 1.

    • Mysteron Reconstructions: None.

    • Spectrum Losses: Scarlet is killed but recovers.

    • Collateral Damage: 1 transporter, 1 nuclear device, 2 police cars.

    • At the start of the episode, Big Ben shows 11.45pm, but later Colonel White states it's been two and a half hours since the transporter went missing, meaning it should be 2.15am. However, Macey then hears Big Ben strike midnight, only 15 minutes later.

    • When Captain Ochre calls Captain Blue, Blue's shoulder epulets flash white, when they should flash with the colour of the caller, in this case ochre.

    • If the Mysterons could hijack the transporter, knock out the driver and set the atomic bomb timer, they should have been able to set the bomb to explode after say, 1 second, giving Spectrum no time to do anything and destroying most of London.

    • One of the policemen escorting the transporter says into his radio that they've lost the transporter, yet doesn't bother to mention that his collegues in the other police car are probably hurt after crashing their car through a shop front.

    • The Angels are called in during the bomb crisis, but there doesn't seem to be much point in them even taking off as everything happens in underground car parks and bomb testing areas.

    • Colonel White tells Blue and Scarlet that their route to the testing site had been cleared, yet they still ended up running into, and being delayed by, a woman in a car. How did she manage to get passed the road blocks denoting the route?

    • The shot of the transporter and the second, and only remaining police car, which follows just after the episode title appears, shows the transporter model nearly toppling onto it's side when it's only supposed to swing around the corner as it's out of control. This happens again during the sequence where Captains Scarlet and Blue rush to get the nuclear device out of London's city limits.

    • Mysterons: This is the voice of the Mysterons. We know that you can hear us Earthmen. You attacked our complex on Mars and you will pay a heavy price. Our next act of retaliation will be to destroy the city of London. Do you hear, Earthmen? We will destroy the city of London!

    • (The transporter goes out-of-control due to Mysteron influence) Policeman #1: Hey Macey, have ya gone crazy?! Macey: I can't hold it, I just can't hold it! It's out of my control! It's out of my control!

    • Policeman #1: Some job that driver's got, shipping atomic bombs around. Policeman #2: It's not a bomb, it's a nuclear device, for civil use. Policeman #1: What's the difference? It would still make a mess of the city if anything went wrong. Policeman #2: Oh relax! What can go wrong?

    • Official ITC Recommended Broadcast-Order Number: 3

    • First U.K. (BBC2) Network Airdate: Friday 13 October, 1993 - 6:00PM

    • Short, minor scenes from Tony Barwick's original script draft for this episode were either edited out before production of this episode commenced, or the scenes that had been filmed but didn't make it to the final cut. Those scenes would have shown Spectrum consisting of officers code-named "Yellow" and "Purple", and would have also shown the Room of Sleep, an area of Cloudbase which is referred to in "Treble Cross" and "Spectrum Strikes Back", and actually seen in "Place of the Angels".
