A Variable Geometry Rocket is hijacked by a Space Major Reeves, an old friend of Colonel White, who launches the space-plane and makes a quick departure in a fighter jet with the rocket's flight programme unit, to which only he knows the 4-letter self-destruct code, to obliterate the rocket before it knocks out an essential target, which happens to be Base Concord, the state-of-the-art airbase where the rocket originally left from.

Captains Scarlet and Blue are assigned to self-destruct the rocket before it reaches Base Concord, but to accomplish this, they have to check 10,000 possible 4-lettered code-words, starting from 'ABLE', and they don't even know that Reeves has set the destruct code-word as 'ZERO'.moreless

That should be the motto of the VGR rocket, which is strangely reminiscent of Thunderbird 1 the way it's wings swing out and it flies like a normal plane. Reeves crashing his plane like that to prevent anyone getting the code box was kind of odd even for a Mysteron. They usually just blow themselves up but he kills himself seemingly just to spite Spectrum so they can't save the base. Unfortunately for him, this leads to Spectrum's biggest piece of luck ever when the code box activates underwater and destroys the VGR. Although if the process for entering codewords at Base Concord had been quicker they might have had more of a chance. They really couldn't have done it any slower. It must take about 20 seconds for each word when one person could do it in about 5.
Oddly, like Dr. Magnus in Operation Time, Reeves seems to use Captain Scarlet's gun when he's on Base Concord. A good episode with plenty of suspense towards the end, only spoiled by Spectrum's rather undeserved good luck.moreless

    • Mysterons: This is the voice of the Mysterons. We know that you can hear us Earthmen. We are going to launch one of your own incendiary rockets and you will have no way of knowing it's target. We have not forgotten. We will continue our war of nerves.

    • (Captain Scarlet and Captain Blue have both disobeyed orders. Colonel White tells them to leave while he decides if he should court martial them) Lieutenant Green: Will they be court martialled sir? Colonel White: No, but another question like that, Lieutenant and you will be. They are brave men and Spectrum needs brave men in the continuing fight against the Mysterons.
