The reasoning given for the creation of the 53rd card (Once known as The Nothing, now known as The Hope) was that for everything positive, there must be an equal amount of negative. Eriol's magic circle is Sakura's old magic circle (Sun in the middle, Moon on one side) which was also Clow Reed's magic circle. This makes sense since he is the reincarnation of Clow Reed.
