The fate of this series is up in the air at this time. Officially it is cancelled.

    However, there are various theories.

They are making a cominc book series at the very least. But the writers want to be able to tell their story across additional seasons. Alot of questions were not answered, and it is hard ot reach the whole audience over a comic book. I for one will be buying the comic book, cause I'm so damn confused over the loose ends.

There is talk of bringing the show back for a final season, just to tie up loose ends, but there is nothing set in stone yet. Also, the writers are pushing for another 3 season minimum, but the show is very expensive for HBO (it was one of their most expensive shows, costing roughly 4-16 million an episode. This was due to the high cost of all the actors, and the on location aspect of the show).

The writer's are refusing to do a movie at this point, because they can't finish the story in two hours. The movie would actually leave alot of the questions with sloppy endings.

The only other thing I can think of that has been talked about is that HBO might want to do a mini series (roughly 6 episodes, or a half season). This would give the show more time to fill in the leads, and would give them a good 6-8 hours to tell the story. This seems like the best bet, but time is running out.

Truth be told, the show probably won't be coming back to HBO.

Let's take a moment to wallow in self pity.  Quite justified!   Fascinating noir writing, wonderful direction, inspired casting and personal-best performances.

A series of quality, originality, and intelligence.

Of course HBO had to bury it.

Before giving this show a chance, I thought Rome was the best show this network has ever produced.
But after finishing this series I've decided I was completely wrong about that. This show is unfathomably better.
As others have said before, cancelling it was hands down the biggest mistake HBO has ever made.

In an interview the prez of HBO said 2 million per episode, which seems fairly cheap (ABC's Invasion is 4 million per episode), and even if it's more, 16 million? Nuh-uh, no way. Tons of movies are produced for that. No way a cable network could afford it. Not even a show getting 60 million viewers would have a budget that high.

well, the big wig who was in charge when Carnivale was cancelled was fired.  I believe currently HBO is working on restructuring their hierarchy.  Depending on who gets put in the top spots there may be a chance for some more carnivale.  Here's to hoping Carnivale gets at least a mini series(as the writers have indeed stated a movie would not suffice).
