Lots of reviews state that the pace is really slow, but for how long?  I'm watching ep 1 currently of season 1, so when should I expect the fast paced suspense?

The suspense kinda comes from the slow pace...things take their time, some episodes are more exciting than others but for the most part the show remains slow paced...it builds the tension and atmosphere. Too bad the show wasn't able to be completed so that there could be a payoff.

Slow paced and unanswered questions seem to be the main things I'm hearing... I think I'll pass on Carnivale.

    Your loss, pal.

Though if you are looking for something on a shallow level, then this one is not for you. If you’re into a show for the characters, direction, scripts and storytelling, then check it out. If it’s just for the action…walk on by.

the show isn't exactly 'slow paced' it is just measured.  They don't move it along at a speed most people are used to, but then most shows follow the 'one "big surprise" per episode' type formula.  This shows plays out kinda chess-like, they take the time to position all the pieces(characters) before finally making some important moves and attacks.  Once you get towards the end of the first season meaningful things are happening, and in the second season they no longer have to deal with viewers getting to know the characters so the 'pace' feels much faster.

I preferred the slower pace of Season 1, Season 2 was great but most of it felt way too rushed.

And yes please, if you want nonstop action go back to your Steven Segal movies or something.

Most of season 1 was pretty slow, but still very good (mostly due to the wonderful Babylon story arc in episodes 5 & 6). The pace however does pick up drastically in the even better season 2.

Well, if like Daniel Knauf you have a 5-year plan and you learn at the start of Season2 that you've been cancelled, then you do have to slightly condense your plans. Still Season2 gave us the head trip that happened at Damascus, the horrific events on the Lincoln Highway and the stunning season end.

Look how HBO butchered Rome and the mess they made of that - look to Carnivale if you want to know how to get out of a show after a bodyblow like that with dignity. The producers handled it far better than anyone had a right to expect - its just a shame that hardly anyone watched.

Still hoping for that movie closer - like Deadwood - and maybe a Season Three if the 2hr special does well....

I too preferred season one over season two. Sure, it was slow paced, but it was always interesting and the quality of the production kept me glued to the screen.

I too liked the Babylon Arc, especially the reveal at the end, I was kinda freaked. But, it seemed Ben was underused those episodes. The whole season pace though, slow and suspenceful, although for me personally, the story of the carnivale was mush more interesting than Brother Justin's story.
