  • There have been many versions of Cinderella- in many plays, operas and even a Disney movie. Well the cast of "The Carol Burnett Show" decided to present their version of Cinderella: "Cinderella Gets It On", featuring the Pointer Sisters.moreless

This is absolutely my favorite skit that they ever did on "The Carol Burnett Show"- for me it even tops the "Went With The Wind" episode which came a bit later. The skit "Cinderella Gets It On" opens as a fairy tale set in a house, where once upon a time there was a chick named Cinderella (Carol Burnett). She lived in a house with really cool, hip, singing sisters (the Pointer Sisters) and a cool, hip Mama(Vicki Lawrence). They open by singing about how "Life is a Super Gig, When You Got Soul" when Cinderella comes home after waiting in line for 18 hours for the last 4 tickets to the Elfin John Concert. By the way, Cinderella is not cool- she's a square. All three sisters and her Mama grab all the tickets and, in song, compel Cinderella to do her chores, "while we're dancing at the disco tonight". Cinderella begins to sing how she wishes that she were a "foxy, super chick" when her Fairy Godmother Marcus appears (played by Harvey Korman). The Fairy Godmother gives her a look that makes her look like "Tina Turner and Cher combined", and off she goes to the disco. At the disco, everybody notices her, and they all sing in unison, "Who is that Foxy Chick?" Cinderella, used to being servile, offers to help her Mama, who does not recognize her, mend her dress, when Mama says, "What you doin' down there, Superstar?" "I was just getting ready to do my new dance...It's called the 'schlump'. Elfin John, the Prince of the ball (played by Tim Conway), notices that nobody is paying attention to him, and then he spots Cinderella and falls in love with her. He asks what she's doing there, and Mama says that she's going to do a new dance. "A dance? Well, lay it on us, lay it on us!", he says. "No, no way, man, not without my choreographer", says Cinderella. Suddenly, Grandmother Marcus appears. "You called?", she says. Cinderella tells her that she's going to teach them the schlump, and Grandmother Marcus takes over, and has everyone doing the Schlump. Suddenly, the clock strikes 12 noon, and Cinderella runs out and unwittingly leaves her shoe. The next day, after going door to door, the prince comes to the home where Cinderella lives with her Mama and step sisters. After trying the shoe on all the sisters, he turns to leave, when Cinderella, who is now "square" and shy again, comes up , unconfident, and says, "Excuse me, Mr. John, but can I try it on?". All the step sisters and the Mama begin to laugh violently, and then the Mama breaks out in a taunting song: "Ooooh, Cinderella...Thinks she can moooooooove...with Elfin John..."(then more laughter)...."Oooooh, Cinderella...Thinks she can grooooooooove....with Elfin John..."(more laughter from the step sisters)....Then, Eflin slips the shoe on Cinderella's foot..."Oooooooh, Cindy, baby, my favorite little daughter, who's gonna make room for her Mama to move in with her and Elfin, and be taken care of foreverandeverandeverandeverandever....Cindy, baby, get me..on...", and the chorus of the step sisters sing, "On"...Elfin says to Cinderella, "You? You're the foxy chick at the dance, the one in those wild outfits, I mean, it's you! It's you! It's you! It's you!...Well, glad you got your shoe back".. He turns to leave, and Cinderella, cries out, and Fairy Godmother Marcus returns. Cinderella tells Fairy Godmother Marcus that she's in love with the King of Rock, Elfin John, but he doesn't want her because she's too square. The Fairy Godmother turns Elfin into a square, and he then falls in love with Cinderella, and they all live happily ever after!moreless
