Caroline in the City

It's leading up to the Christmas holidays and Caroline is planning a break with Del. Richard arrives with Shelley, who is singing "The Twelve Days of Christmas" and when Richard drolly says "Five Gold Rings" she stops. Caroline gives Shelley one of her fruit cakes from the year before and Shelley goes to leave. Caroline couldn't get mistletoe so has cilantro above her door. When Shelley asks what people do below cilantro Annie sarcastically tells her the say goodbye. Shelley does so and when everyone else replies she leaves. Richard moans that he still can't get rid of Shelley and when Charlie comes in Annie has an idea to set Shelley up with him. Richard is reluctant at first but agrees.



Del and Caroline are in the travel agents trying to book a break in Paris. Nothing is available until July and Del says they don't know where they'll be by then. Upset that Del isn't committed to her, Caroline leaves.



Charlie comes to tell Richard and Annie he met the girl and they are going out on a date the following night. Richard is impressed Annie's plan worked until Shelley comes over. She tells him they can't share a bed when they visit her parents and when he offers to go out the next night she says she's visiting a sick friend. Richard is appalled that Shelley would cheat on him.



In Remo's Caroline is practicing breaking up with Del, with Remo's help. When Del arrives he breaks up with her before she gets the chance and she leaves. Richard comes in, planning to catch Charlie and Shelley together but Charlie asked out the wrong girl.



At Caroline's apartment she is drinking and has eaten an entire box of cookies. In her drunken haze she tells Annie she wants revenge, and Annie suggests making fun of him in her comic strip. After a few false starts Caroline writes a strip with Del admitting to being a cross dresser.



At Richard's he has made a tape so he doesn't have to break up with Shelley to her face. He starts the tape and walks out but the tape gets stuck so he's forced to tells her he wants to break up. To his horror Shelley says she thinks it's a great idea because couples who breaks up and get back together are the strongest.



Richard and Caroline have an office party that only consists of the two of them. Before he leaves Richard gives Caroline her present; a painting of Paris. Del comes in as Richard leaves after getting a Christmas peck on the cheek from Caroline. Del gives Caroline his present, saying he hopes they can still be friends. He gives her plane tickets to Paris and says he hopes she finds someone special to take with her. Caroline says he really shouldn't have done something so sweet and thoughtful.



The next day Del gets his morning paper from his doorstep and closes the door. He shouts when he sees Caroline's strip and then answers the phone to his mother. He denies the strip is true and insists he didn't steal her angora sweater.
