Richard takes his paintings out of the closet when Caroline and Annie convince a gallery owner to consider them for an exclusive show - which turns out to be for gay artists only; Annie becomes entangled in Caroline's search for a new hair dresser - and her old hairdresser (Lerner) spots her at the gallery opening party. Guest star Dan Butler is an openly gay actor and playwright best known for his recurring role as the obnoxious heterosexual sportscaster "Bulldog" on Frasier. He reprises his role as Kenneth Arabian in episode 40, "Caroline and the Dearly Departed." Interestingly, series star Eric Lutes made two appearances on Frasier as the new, gay manager of the radio station.
Also Richard spends this episode pretending to be gay so his paintings will be in the gallery. In real life Malcolm Gets, who plays Richard, is also gay.
