Caroline in the City

It's New Year's Day and Richard is bitter as always. He says he's glad the holidays are over because he's sick of Christmas but Caroline tells him they need to do the Christmas cards for the coming year. Annie comes in, very hung over and says she met a guy called Rob Rothman but can't remember who he is. He left a message confirming their plans for the next night. She finds a pair of really ugly earrings Caroline got from Del. Annie tells her to return them but Caroline feels she can't because they were a gift. Richard gets a phone call from someone called Donna and arranges to meet in his apartment at lunchtime and discusses a fee. Assuring Annie that he's not a gigolo he tells Annie and Caroline he's joined an artist agency and Donna is a client he's going to do a portrait for.



Caroline decides to return the earrings after all and goes to the jewelers. They were on sale so she can only have store credit and is confused by the offerings for an exchange the jeweler shows her. He tells her they cost $1243. Caroline is uncomfortable with the money Del spent and says she can't give them up until she's shown a diamond bracelet. At Annie's suggestion she buys herself the bracelet and asks to see watches worth the same to give Del.



At Remo's Annie is still trying to find someone who saw her with rob Rothman and Caroline tells her she and Del are going to the movies and that she'll tell him the earrings were inappropriate and give him the watch. Richard comes in with Donna, a beautiful Italian woman. Remo runs around waiting on the woman hand and foot and tells Annie that the woman's boyfriend is a gangster. Caroline tries to tell Richard through the window but he ignores her.



In Richard's apartment Caroline interrupts the sitting to tell Richard about Donna's boyfriend. She barges in and tells her she's Richard's wife so Donna isn't suspicious about being ushered out by a horrified Richard.



At Caroline's apartment Del arrives for their movie date, shortly followed by the police for Richard. They ask him to keep painting, which eh reluctantly agrees to and leaves with them. Caroline gives Del her gift and the jeweler phones, saying the earrings were a cheaper version worth only $75. Del opens his gift and tells Caroline it's too expensive and inappropriate but won't let her take it back.



Back at Richard's apartment Donna is sitting again and her boyfriend finds them. Richard tries to run away but the gangster says he loves the portrait. He gives Richard $4000 for it before the police barge in despite Richard's attempts to keep them out. They arrest the gangster and take the money. The gangster tells Richard he's family for trying to stick up for him.



In Remo's Del is playing with his new watch and Richard is depressed about losing his first sale. Annie asks for help with her date but when he arrives the rest of the gang get the hint to leave. It turns out the Rob is there to help Annie with her taxes and is married. Caroline asks Remo for their bill and Remo lets them off with it, saying Richard is now family.
