Caroline's Aunt Mary is coming to visit before going on a cruise and Caroline feels she has to wear a very ugly knitted vest her aunt made her. Annie, Del and Richard help with the suitcases, including one full of cheese, and Mary gives Richard a tip. She then tells Caroline that the vest is ugly and she didn't knit it so a grateful Caroline can take it off. Caroline reminds Del about going to the opera that Friday night and Del reminds her he doesn't want to go but she insists. Aunt Mary asks permission to give an old friend of Caroline's, Peter Welmerling, her phone number because she's the only unmarried cousin, and Caroline says no. She's also shocked to find out her Aunt and uncle have separated.
The next day Peter leaves a message for Caroline and Del suggests she takes him to the opera so he doesn't have to go. She says no and asks Richard who says he'd love to go but Shelley ahs plans on using him for practise for her acupuncture course. Peter calls again and Caroline suggests it and the offer is accepted. Del is happy he's going to be off the hook and isn't worried as Caroline says he has braces and asthma.
On Friday night Del arrives to drop off contracts in pretence so he can meet Peter, who turns out to be a handsome and wealthy surgeon. Del tries to make himself seem more manly but fails in the wake of Peter's easy put downs. Caroline invites Del out for a drink after the opera but Del says no. Annie says she's impressed he's not more jealous and Del changes his mind about the drink.
At Richard's apartment he's hiding in the closet so Shelley can't stick needles in him and Del comes, desperate for help. As he can't be a doctor he asks for help understanding opera. After Shelley's suggestion that he just mentions Pavarotti Richard agrees to teach Del the plot of "The Marriage of Figaro", the opera Caroline has gone to see.
At the opera Caroline asks Peter if he's seen it before and he says he actually conducted it. He's upset at the performance he sees. In Remo's Peter impresses the owner with his knowledge of Italian and wine, who tells an increasingly bored Caroline to behave. Del arrives and at first dazzles Peter and Caroline with his knowledge of music and wine but falls flat when he suggests that Pavarotti could have sung a bass part in "Figaro" when he's a tenor. To try to get his dignity back he juggles the fruit in Remo's display but Peter takes over. The two get more competitive and turn Remo's restaurant into a circus.
Outside Caroline catches up with Del, who has been thrown out of Remo's. Caroline tells him she thinks he's amazing, which makes him feel better and the walk away arm in arm
