Carson's Cellar

Show Summary

Carson's Cellar is a comedy variety television series released in 1953 and produced by KNXT at the Don Lee Mutual Broadcasting Studios in Hollywood. Starring Johnny Carson and June Foray, each show runs through a variety of comedy sketches with a tongue-in-cheek sense of humor. From magician's tricks to role-playing character pieces, the series offers a fast-paced mixture of comic elements. Johnny Carson uses a stand-up comedian style of delivery to introduce each show before leading into situational sketches featuring a number of comedy actors and comedians, such as June Foray, Groucho Marx and Red Skeleton. Typically playing the main character, Johnny Carson creates sequences that include game shows, dressing up in drag and satirical sketches. Carson's Cellar was Johnny's first big break at hosting his own television show. Set in a mock-up of a dusty basement, the low-budget production highlighted Johnny Carson's comedic skills and developed into a popular weekly show.
