If it came in #2 for the timeslot, I'm assuming CSI Miami came in first(why that show continues to be such a big hit still confounds me, but I digress). I'd say that's not too shabby to start with. If it gets some good word of mouth I think it's got a decent shot at sticking around.

That's just within the 18-49 demo, which is not this show's strong point. Overall, it had a damn good 7.7 rating! A good sign considering some other recent premieres failed to crack a 3 (*cough* Dollhouse *cough*).

I did not expect it to get that many millions of viewers, so hopefully it sticks around.

Thats good to know. Hope ABC keeps this series going then and don't get me started on Dollhouse. Still waiting for some improvement on that show but back on-topic I just don't want to start liking a series just to see it cancelled again. Castle has potential. I want to see it develop.

Even though it looks like castle did well, it actually had very poor retention out of DWTS, which got 22.5m, that is about 51% retention. Not to mention that it lost around 2.9m over the hour. So don't get excited yet.

2nd ep was on par with last week's premiere which is good since 4 out of 5 new shows drop in week 2.

I'm encouraged by these numbers. Even though it has lost 50% of its lead in each week you usually see a drop off the second week in the numbers and in this case it pretty much held its own. Considering the way some shows numbers have looked lately I think this is pretty encouraging in general.

You have to believe word of mouth is going to help on this show as well. I was talking with my brother in another state about this show and he was not even aware of it. He enjoyed it so much he called me early Saturday to tell me it was repeating because we lost power last Monday and I missed it on TV (watched on ABC.com). He wanted to make sure I got to see the televised version and he is now hooked on the show.

Also season one DVD is being already scheduled for release in September 09 and I think they are going to put some advertising behind this show once they see it has some solid viewership. I think it will be back for next season.

I'm pretty sure ABC's press release about Episode 2's numbers indicated it did better at holding onto DWTS's audience this week than in the premiere, which is a good sign, especially since this season of DWTS looks to be a really weak one(at least in terms of quality).

    tvbythenumbers overnight ratings (no DVRs)

    Episode 1x03: 9.81 million & came in 2nd for the 10pm hour.
    18-49 demo rating/share: 2.7/7 (#2)
    18-34 demo rating/share: 2.4/7 (#2)

pifeedback:Take a look at the three-week overnight track for Castle (the weeks of March 9 & 16 are based on the final nationals)
    March 9 – Viewers: 10.76 million; A18-49: 3.0/ 8
    March 16 – Viewers: 10.97 million; A18-49: 2.9/ 8
    March 23 – Viewers: 9.81 million; A18-49: 2.7/ 7

"While Castle is by no means a bust, retention of just 47% in total viewers & 52 % among adults 18-49 out of the last half-hour of lead-in Dancing With the Stars could certainly be better. Keep in mind that the first two minutes of the Castle average included Dancing With the Stars."

Competition: CBS CSI:Miami (#1), NBC Medium (#3), TNT Saving Grace.

Its dropping. Not good. Lets hope they haven't forgotten the funny - more fun like the first episode, less focusing on oooh crime.

They have to focus on crime! That's how Castle gets his ideas for his books!

    Two points to consider:

Over 9 million views is not horrible. ANd when you consider it is up against one of CBS top shows (god knows why, I am sick of the CSI shows/hype), that is not horrible.
Also, would people who watch DWTS also watch Castle? It would seems that the two groups of fan would not overlap to that great a degree.

Total viewership is for bragging rights only. Advertisers are looking at the 18-49 demo ratings. Right now Castle averages 3.722 million for the demo (Live+SameDay DVR watching) & the ABC network average is 3.58 million.

So that would tell me that it should survive to next season, but tvbythenumbers.com claims that it is right on the edge of being canceled and probably will be. Why is that when it is the sixth most watch program on ABC and is still above their 18-49 viewer number?

tvbythenumbers puts it in danger because each week the demo numbers are falling & if those numbers keep falling the average demo #'s will fall below the network average quickly. With just the 3rd episode, the avg demo #'s are only slightly higher than the network average - the numbers need to go up or at least keep up with the premiere numbers. Talk it up & get people watching. I have a hard time on Monday night choosing (luckily I'm not a Nielsen family so my viewing doesn't count) because I like CBS CSI:Miami & NBC Medium which also are on at 10pmET. Lately I've been watching Castle live then watching the DVR of Medium the same nite & catching DVR'd CSI:Miami the next day.
