  • USE YOUR BRAIN, RICHARD

Castle "Significant Others" Review: The Ex Factor

After a few weeks away from television following that delightful little Christmas episode, Castle returned to the viscous mixture of relationship-hagglin' and procedural murder-solvin' that has largely dominated this season... and I think I'm maybe ready for a change of pace.

  • Episode Summary

Castle and Beckett find there are plenty of suspects when a powerful divorce attorney is murdered. Chaos, tension, humor and awkwardness abound when circumstances bring Castle's ex-wife, Meredith, and Beckett to both live at the loft.

    • Ex takes over.

      8.5
I'm surprised Martha didn't let Meredith have it from the beginning. Sure she didn't want Alexis to get upset. It was her mom by the way. But to let her come in and take over kinda. I don't believe Martha Rodgers would just step aside.

Richard coming home to set her(Meredith) straight was funny. I knew he wouldn't do it.

As others have said, Lainey, and Espo, and Ryan trying to give advice was so cute. Castle and Beckett need to know more about each other. Even though I find my wife has more history she won't tell, and we have been together for 30 years. But it's no deal breaker.

The case at hand, The wife (Leanne Piper) changing her name and hiding was a little odd. I didn't see it coming. And the scene with Walter and Samantha Voss destroying the valuables and Them being arrested after Kate warned them.moreless
    • Nice episode!

      9.5
Would have gotten top points if we actually would have gotten to SEE the dinner between Kate and Meredith. Such a shame we didn't....

I enjoyed this episode of Castle. A little bit of the ex and the current partner worked, a little bit of the case (and a primetime appearance for Nancy Lee Grahn) but this was also a little bit of a predictable episode that succumbed to a lot of the cliches.

Overall, I'll give it a solid score.
    • A touch of Wodehouse.

      9.0
Castle returns with a touch of Wodehouse style story line. Given that he was the best writer of comedy in the past hundred years I could not be happier that Castle is drawing some inspiration from the works of . If he were alive today this is the sort of thing he would be writing. If you like light screwball comedy with a decent murder case thrown in this is the episode for you. Castle is pretty much Bertie Wooster in this one and it is fun to watch. The inter cast does a great job and one question I have had since the show began(Why Castle got together with Meredith in the first place)is answered when they give her some more depth. The scenes between Castle and the guys really stand out,it's nice to see such a close bond between them now. This episode was a very good example of screwball comedy and while that may not appeal to everyone I enjoyed every minute of it.moreless
    • More Romance

      3.0
I too agree that Castle and Beckett need more "alone" time aired on the show. They are incredibly "hot" together and daughter and mom need to step aside for a few and let them grow as a couple. Not that I expect a hot and heavy, but the Halloween one cracked me up. Beckett really stole the show and knocked him on his butt with the "kiss me" and slidding into the room. So glad their back in either case.moreless

      • Martha: What you shouldn't have done was let Meredith stay here in the first place. This isn't a flophouse, darling. You've got to stop letting freeloaders just live here.
Castle: Please tell me you see the irony.

      • Beckett: Corey Francis is really...
Esposito: Noah Kesswood. Former officer in the army's military intelligence corps.
        Castle: Former military intelligence?
Beckett: Noah uses a fake identity, starts dating Michelle, and then he disappears just after she's killed?
Castle: It's The Bachelor meets Homeland.

      • Castle: Listen, Meredith, about you staying here--
Meredith: Thanks again, Richard. I can't tell you how much this means to me.
Castle: Yeah. It's just Beckett and I--
Meredith: Are wonderful. It's so refreshing to see how secure you two are in your relationship. You know, most women would take issue with an ex-wife staying with their boyfriend. But not Kate Beckett. She gets it.
Castle: Yeah. Kate gets it. Um, here's the thing, Meredith, I--
Meredith: I know. And, It isn't easy for me to admit. I haven't been the best of mothers. I've missed so much of our daughter's life. So the fact that you're letting me be here now for Alexis during her time of need, Richard, I'll never, ever forget this. (walks away)
        Castle: Neither will Beckett.

      • Lanie: You've gotta take care of it. This is Meredith we're talking about. The deep-fried twinkie that Castle has ex-sex with whenever she rolls into town.
Beckett: Lanie. Look, I trust him. He's not gonna have sex with her.
Lanie: Fine. Let's say it isn't about sex. It's about boundaries. Meredith is marking her territory. You can't just let her waltz in and out whenever she pleases.
Beckett: He's in a catch-22. Alexis is sick--
Lanie: Doesn't matter. This is a war, girl, and guess who's losing.

      • Beckett: Good morning, Lanie.
Lanie: Not from the way you sound. What's wrong?
        Beckett: Men are clueless.
        Lanie: Men or just Castle?

      • Ryan: Just dinner between your ex-wife and your new girlfriend. That's deadly. Castle, you have two worlds, two, right now they're both coming together.
        Esposito: Uh oh.
Ryan: And what happens when worlds collide?
        Esposito: Boom!
Castle: OK guys. You are taking this a little too far.
Esposito: (grabbing Castle) Castle, Meredith knows things about you.
        Castle: So?
        Esposito: So.
        Ryan: So.
Esposito: (to Castle) So is there anything Meredith knows that you don't want Beckett to know? Boom.
Ryan: Two worlds colliding. (Castle hurries after Beckett)
