Castle "Under the Influence" Review: Your Tale Is of the Lamest

Esposito took the reins this week—no, not Esposito and Ryan, but single, solitary Esposito—and that right there is where everything went wrong.

  • Episode Summary

Beckett and Castle's investigation into the death of an up and coming DJ forces them to deal with the rough world of the music industry. As the investigation proceeds, Esposito takes a problematic teenager under his wing.

    • Under the Influence

The cop embracing the troubled teen gimmick is a little bit cliched, but this episode made it work. Interesting on a number of different levels, and while it is not a memorable episode, it is worth checking out.

Just a little bit too much Esposito.
    • Don't know what to think or say

The fact that Castle and Beckett were almost inexistent in this episode made me think on how this season is going to end. We have to wait for 12 episodes to finaly see the Senator show up again? Isn't he the bad guy to beat here? And why show us more of Esposito's life after five seasons? If there will be a season six, I honestly hope is good enough to keep us attached to the show because I don't like the way they're developing the story.moreless
    • This was really the Esposito show

Castle and Beckett were really guest stars in this episode and depending how you feel about that this is either a really good episode or a really bad one. I have to say after five years it's nice to get some more back story and to see his place. I liked the fact that even at the end of the episode he had not really won the kid over. The case kept me guessing and the Esposito centered story was good so other then the lack of Castle and Beckett I felt this episode was pretty good, but I wouldn't want to see an episode like this every week. Once a season is enough for me.moreless
    • a little too much Esposito for my taste

I'm not saying that Huertas is a bad actor. I'm saying that is was weird to watch Esposito going solo and even saying to Ryan "I got this" and having to do things alone (what was it with the weird bad cop scenes in the bar?). Further I was irritated that Castle and Beckett were almost inexistent in this episode. I like seeing them and seeing them together. Also I missed the nice Castle-in-his-beautiful-loft-moments with his mother or Alexis.moreless

      • Esposito: Yo, did you just do the hair thing?
        Ryan: What hair thing?
Esposito: Every time you're about to meet a celebrity or a pretty girl, you run your hand through your hair.
Ryan: TMZ said that Tyrese was at that party with Josie Lang. He's producing her new album.
Esposito: Yeah, well, she's no Regina.
Ryan: I understand that the image of her as a girl scout is seared into your memory, but Josie is a real vocalist.
Esposito: Whose fan base consists of 12-year-old girls, and you.

      • Castle: In a relationship, if you choose a movie and you choose very, very poorly, do you lose your turn?
        Esposito: How poorly?
        Beckett: Valentine's Day.
Esposito: You should lose two turns.
        Beckett: What?!
        Esposito: Yeah. I'm just saying.
        Castle: Those are the rules.
        Esposito: Those are the rules.
        Beckett: That's ridiculous.
