    Xiaolin Showdown

    Follow
    The WB (ended 2006)
This mystical, high-adventure series with choked full of current comedy references is based on the ancient mythical Xiaolin martial arts inspired by Chinese monks thousands of years ago. Omi, a young, gifted monk-in-training from the Xiaolin Temple, must show his fellow trainees - J-pop hipster girl Kimiko, flashy, street smart Brazilian Raimundo and Texas Kung Fu cowboy Clay - around the world to find and protect sacred ancient artifacts. These sacred objects with supernatural powers called the Shen-Gong-Wu are keys to controlling the powers of good and evil. These can only be captured after an extreme, gravity-defying, martial art-inspired "double dare" showdown occurs. Challenging the trainees is evil boy genius Jack Spicer and his custom-built robot army, along with the ancient witch Wuya - all competing for these objects in extreme Xiaolin Showdowns. It is a tight race - for the one who gathers all of the Shen-Gong-Wu will become an unstoppable force for good ... or evil! Let's go Xiaolin Showdown! Note: A Xiaolin Showdown starts after saying, "Gong Yi Tan Pai," which means "go" in Chinese. Character Guide Omi - An excitable, young monk-in-training who is the leader of the Xiaolin team. Omi is an orphan and has lived at the Xiaolin Temple his whole life. He sets his heart to finding the scattered pieces of the Shen-Gong-Wu, and will have a showdown with any enemy that gets in his way of doing so. Besides teaching his new students about the Shen-Gong-Wu pieces and martial arts, Omi will always learn something from them too. Special Technique: Tornado Strike. Kimiko - She is a rich and sometimes snotty girl. Born and raised in Tokyo, she has a very wealthy background, and sometimes likes to show off her valuables. However, she proves herself worthy when it comes to battle. She tells the others not to pick on Omi, and immediately befriends the young monk, sticking to his side at all times. Kimiko possesses the element of fire. Special Technique: Judallet Flip. Raimundo - He doesn't seem all that nice when we first meet him because he picks on Omi and has a little bit of a bully in him. He is more worried about what his new room looks like than finding the sacred Shen-Gong-Wu objects. However, this Brazilian circus star is helpful in battle as he shows what he can do to kick evil's butt. Raimundo possesses the element of wind. Special Technique: Typhoon Boom. Clay - A cowboy from Texas that knows a thing or two about Kung Fu. He is more loyal to Omi than the rest of the team. He uses his cowboy-like skills to fight in battle and teaches Omi, little by little, how to properly beat the bad guys. He has a steady approach when fighting in battle. Never in a hurry unless he's worried about finding the next Shen-Gong-Wu. Clay possesses the element of earth. Special Technique: Seismic Kick. Master Fung - He is Omi's teacher. He believes Omi will turn out to be a great monk, and, therefore, gave Omi a band of new students to teach and help find the ancient Shen-Gong-Wu objects before evil gets a chance to. He is also a mentor to the students, and often guides them in their travels. When Omi and the others are having trouble in their adventures, Master Fung always provides good lessons to help them in the right direction. Dojo Kanojo Cho - He may look four feet long, but Dojo is really a fourty foot long fire-breathing dragon! He is the Xiaolin Temple guardian and has been guarding the ancient Shen-Gong-Wu scroll for thousands of years. Dojo is also used for transportation to take Omi and his friends to the locations of the Shen-Gong-Wu pieces. He feels like he's been demoted from temple guardian to baby-sitter, though. He is Omi's guardian and is somewhat of a trainer to him during showdowns. He's also the only dragon that can sniff out the Shen-Gong-Wu to their exact location even when they're many miles away. Jack Spicer - The wannabe bad guy that dresses in goth clothing and is bent on world domination. He has a bad attitude, and will always chew out the people who don't agree with what he thinks is best. He stumbles upon the spirit of Wuya, the evil witch, who tells him that he needs to find the missing Shen-Gong-Wu objects before Omi and the rest do. If Jack can't take on Omi by himself, then he relies on his evil Jack-bot minions to help stop them. He is set on finding the missing objects so he can carry out his plans on ruling the world! Wuya - Once an evil witch, but was defeated by Grandmaster Dashi in the very first Xiaolin Showdown. As a result, she was cast into a wooden puzzlebox to be locked away in for 1500 years. Now, she's an evil spirit that can't take physical form and must enlist Jack to help find the missing objects. Wuya tells Jack what to do when he comes face-to-face with Omi and his team, but most of the time Jack just sends the robots to do his dirty work. Wuya needs all the Shen-Gong-Wu objects to return to physical form. Kids' WB Broadcast History November 1, 2003 - Current .... Saturdays, 9:30am Repeats August 16 - August 27, 2004 .... CBS (ended 1969)
The Wild Wild West ran for four seasons, and featured the adventures of two Secret Service Agents working for President Ulysses S. Grant. The two men were James West, former Union soldier and current man-of-action, gunman, and womanizer. His partner was Artemus Gordon, a former con man and master of disguise and invention. Together, the two fought various menaces aimed at the United States and President Grant, as well as investigating other Federal crimes. Riding on the post-James Bond spy craze of the 60's, WWW featured not only all of the typical "spy gimmicks" like boot knives, miniature explosives, and spike-firing grapple guns, but featured a variety of criminal masterminds wielding high-tech items (for 1880) like robot squids, cyborgs, exo-skeletons, steam-powered giant puppets, earthquake machines, hallucinogenic drugs, shrinking potions, and much much more. Their major nemesis, the diminutive Dr. Miguelito Loveless, was a master of such gadgets and gizmos. The show's producers and writers mixed all of these with typical Western movie conventions, a nod to the old movie serials, and some modern-day stylings as well to produce a unique series that has rarely been seen since. Southland

    Southland

    Follow
    NBC (ended 2013)
Southland has redefined the police drama genre with its raw, authentic look at the lives and work of Los Angeles detectives and beat cops. Shot on location in the streets and neighborhoods of Los Angeles, the series captures a realistic, natural environment where similar situations can and often do occur in real life. Created by Ann Biderman, executive producers are John Wells and Christopher Chulack. Southland is produced by John Wells Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.

Southland was a short midseason replacement series used by NBC to plug the hole at Thursday 10:00 pm left by the end of ER. While its viewership never matched ER’s heyday, the numbers were strong enough to give it a nod for a second 13-episode season that was announced by the network on May 1, 2009, three weeks before the end of the first season. Unfortunately, the show’s fortunes changed over the summer. The transition of the Tonight Show to Conan O’Brien’s hands left Jay Leno as a free agent. NBC President and CEO Jeff Zucker, determined not to lose Leno to a competing network, gave Leno a nightly variety show that would air Monday through Friday at 10:00 pm. This displaced a number of heavy-duty dramas like Law & Order: SVU and Southland which would be moved to 9:00 pm slots – before television’s safe harbor. On August 25, 2009, NBC announced they were pushing back the season two premiere from September 25, 2009, to October 23, 2009 (a Friday at 9:00 pm berth). NBC claimed the move was for the good of the show, taking it out of direct competition with the season premieres of Medium – newly moved to Fridays – and Dollhouse. On October 8, 2009, though, NBC cancelled the show. Press reports at the time said the network felt the show was too "dark and gritty." The decision also left the network with six filmed-but-unaired episodes of season two.

John Wells and WB Television determined not to give up on the show. After NBC reduced its fees for the unaired episodes, they were free to shop it to other networks. TNT was rumored as the interested network by the end of October 2009, and on November 2, 2009, TNT made it official with a press release. It purchased the rights to the six-episode second season and the previously aired first season for a run in early 2010. A decision on a third season funded by TNT would be ratings dependent. TNT ultimately renewed Southland for three more seasons because of a very loyal fan base and critical acclaim. It announced the show's cancellation on May 10, 2013, three weeks after the fifth season finale.

Seasons one through three of Southland starred Arija Bareikis as Officer Chickie Brown, Michael Cudlitz as Officer John Cooper, Jenny Gago as Det. Josie Ochoa, Shawn Hatosy as Det. Sammy Bryant, Regina King as Det. Lydia Adams, Michael McGrady as Det. Daniel "Sal" Salinger, Ben McKenzie as Officer Ben Sherman, and Tom Everett Scott as Det. Russell Clarke. Season four starred Michael Cudlitz as Officer John Cooper, Shawn Hatosy as Officer Sammy Bryant, Regina King as Det. Lydia Adams, and Ben McKenzie as Officer Ben Sherman, reflecting a reduced budget. In season five, C. Thomas Howell as Officer Billy "Dewey" Dudek was promoted to regular from recurring cast.

The television series had Linda Lavin starring as Alice. After her husband, Donald, was killed in a truck accident, Alice Hyatt and her 12-year-old son, Tommy, moved out of their home in New Jersey and headed for Hollywood.

Alice's dream was to become a singer but for the time being she got work as a waitress in a greasy spoon, Mel's Diner after her car breaks down in Phoenix. Mel was gruff and demanding and constantly bossing his three waitresses around.

The other two waitresses, in the beginning were Flo and Vera. Flo was the man-hungry southern belle, who's favorite saying was "Kiss My Grits." The other waitress, Vera, was shy and quiet and somewhat, as Mel put it, "dingy." Flo left in 1980 for her own series and was replaced by Belle who was later replaced by Jolene.

In 1985, the series came to an end with Mel selling the diner, a married Vera, was now pregnant, Jolene was planning to open a beauty shop and Alice's dream was finally coming true, she became a lead singer with a band in Nashville.

    Maverick

    Maverick

    Follow
    ABC (ended 1962)
Maverick told the story of the Maverick brothers, Bret and Bart, card sharps who lived during the Old West era. The show was originally a straightforward adventure tale, but it evolved when the writers began adding comedy to the scripts. Bret quickly became the television western's first quasi-mercenary, a character who would help the forces of justice but usually only if he stood to profit from doing so. When he resorted to gunfire, he wasn't the West's finest marksman. In fact, he was much more likely to outsmart his opponent or slip out the back door once trouble began. The writers also added a foil for Bret - his brother Bart. Bart was more conservative than the devilish Bret, but just as unlikely to join any fight that could be avoided. The two characters began alternating as leads on the show as they journeyed through small towns with odd names like Oblivion and Apocalypse. Along the way, they associated with fellow card sharps like Dandy Jim Buckley and Gentleman Jack Darby. There was also Samantha Crawford, a lovely female rogue who loved to challenge the Maverick brothers to see who could out-con the other.

All these elements helped make Maverick a television western that stood apart from the crowd. Audiences responded to the mix of traditional Western adventure and good-natured humor, making the show an instant hit. Bret Maverick, in particular, became a hero for many armchair cowboys. As a result, the writers began to play up the comedy elements even more, expanding the storylines to satirize other prime time programming. Maverick lampooned everything from Gunsmoke to Dragnet. The show would also use actors known for other roles, like Edd "Kookie" Byrnes from 77 Sunset Strip, for cameo roles designed to make viewers' heads turn.

Maverick continued to enjoy solid ratings through the end of the 1950's, but hit a snag in 1960 when James Garner left the program over a contract dispute. To replace him, the producers introduced a new Maverick cousin, Beau. Beau had been sent to London for disgracing the family name during the Civil War (by winning a medal). Beau would be played by Roger Moore, who would later move on to greater fame as James Bond. The show also briefly added another brother, Brent, played by Robert Colbert, before finally ending its run in the summer of 1962. Since then, Maverick has continued to be a popular member of the cult television pantheon. Its enduring status as a beloved show led to two short-lived follow-up series, Young Maverick and Bret Maverick. There was also a 1994 movie version of Maverick which featured James Garner alongside Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster. The follow-ups proved that the magical Maverick mixture of laughter and tumbleweeds was an enduring, age defying source of great family entertainment.

    NBC (ended 2000)
The Pretender is the story of Jarod, a boy-genius taken from his family as a child. Jarod possesses the ability to quickly learn and impersonate different jobs and occupations. His abductors, a facility simply known as The Centre, tested his abilities through various simulations. But after years of these performances, Jarod becomes wise to the fact that these simulations aren't being used to help people. The Centre sells the sims to the highest bidder to do with as they please, whether it is for good or evil purposes. Knowing this, he breaks free from his captors. Now, as an adult, Jarod sets out to find his family. Along the way, he befriends many people, righting any wrong by using his abilities to become anyone he wants to be. But the Centre has a lot invested in Jarod, and they won't give him up easily. They recruit Sydney, his father-figure and trainer all through his time growing up in The Centre. Sydney is the only man who is close to Jarod, he knows how he thinks. Also in pursuit is Miss Parker, Jarod's childhood friend whose father runs The Centre. Both are aided by Broots, a nervous computer whiz who goes above and beyond the call of duty (whether he wants to or not). The Pretender ran for four years on NBC. TNT co-produced two Pretender movies with Twentieth Century Fox TV. The Pretender 2001 premiered on TNT Monday, January 22, 2001 at 8PM. The second movie, The Pretender: Island of the Haunted, premiered on TNT Monday, December 10, 2001 at 8PM ET. Seasons 1-4 and both TV movies are currently available on DVD.moreless
