    Dragon Tales

    Dragon Tales

    PBS (ended 2005)
Two Hispanic children, Max and Emmy, move into a new home. Like any young children, they're not quite happy at first about moving. Then, Emmy finds a secret drawer and inside is box containing a magical, shimmering dragon scale. Hmmm... there's some words on the box. What do they say? "I wish, I wish, with all my heart, to fly with dragons, in a land apart." The magical decorations fly around them, transporting them (and us) to Dragon Land.

Brought to you by Sesame Workshop (formerly Children's Television Workshop), the company that brings you Sesame Street it's Dragon Tales! Join Cassie, Ord, Zak & Wheezie, Quetzal, and their human friends, Max and Emmy in two daily adventures, each separated by a musical interstitial, "Dragon Tunes."

Dragon Tales has enjoyed two seasons and many years of success on PBSKids. The show's popularity has spawned book, video, DVD and CD releases and even a live stage show. Now, the show's popularity has prompted its return. The third season is now airing in repeats along with the first and second, featuring folk songs and a folk theme, as well as a new character named Enrique --- a pleasant looking fellow in an Arthureseque outfit who's moved in next door to Max and Emmy. As some new stories are being paired with past stories, keep an eye on this guide to find out what's new and what's not. The new Dragon Tales CD released on February 15, 2005, featuring 14 tracks, some previously available on CD, but some never-before-released ones as well, such as "Friends," "Hola," and "Speak Up."

After it's return in 2005, it's not yet known if any further new episodes will air. Please note that the show status is currently listed as On Hiatus / TBD, but that may change if it turns out the program will return.

Dragon Tales is going to be part of the new PBSKids "pre-school block." Watch for this special block of programming beginning this fall. It will feature two new PBSKids shows It's a Big Big World and Curious George along with this show and Clifford the Big Red Dog.

    Character Guide:

Emmy: Emmy is six-years old and has an active spirit and sense of adventure. She's always ready to chip in her ideas, participate in fun games and sporting activities and help out all of her friends. However, her take-charge personality can sometimes rub the wrong way and she occasionally needs to take a step back when she becomes too close to the action. Her best dragon friend is Cassie and she usually rides with her.

Max: Max is Emmy's four-year old little brother. He's always happy to join her on an adventure to Dragon Land, but sometimes gets upset about being too small to do certain things. Although not as competitive or sporty as Emmy, he too delights in the fun adventures that Dragon Land has to offer. His best dragon friend is Ord and he usually rides with him.

Cassie: Cassie is a sweet and intelligent, but rather shy pink dragon. She often has many great ideas and is good at many things, but sometimes lacks the confidence to speak her mind. She gets help from all of her friends, especially Emmy, and from her teacher Quetzal. Family is very important to Cassie, as she has 72 brothers and sisters and sometimes helps her parents to take care of her little sister Kiki and her little brother, Finn.

    Birthday: May 16

Ord: Ord is a tall blue dragon who loves nothing more than to eat, particularly anything with dragonberrys in it. Though his tall height appears scary at first, he himself fears many things. One of his biggest fears is the dark, a problem he often wrestles with in the series.

    Birthday: September 9

Zak: Zak is not only a brother to his sister, Wheezie, he's also a very special partner. Zak and Wheezie are a dynamic duo, a two-headed dragon who often work together, but can also think quite independently. Zak enjoys the status quo, but his wild sister Wheezie often helps him to find a good time. Desiring peace, Zak often finds himself at the receiving end of various indignities --- from food on the head to a fish blowing bubbles straight in his face.

    Birthday: July 21

Wheezie: Wheezie is a high-strung dragon who loves singing, doing wild things and shouting and singing about the things she loves. Sister of and joined with Zak, she can't always understand his desire for her to calm down. Still, the two always find in the end that they wouldn't have it any other way.

    Birthday: July 21

Quetzal: Hailing from some sort of Dragon Land Mexico, apparently, Quetzal is a wise dragon teacher who instructs the kids and dragons at the School in the Sky. Unlike other dragon adults, he's only a bit larger than the kids, to keep him easily recognizable to the viewing audience. Quetzal has a magical book that contains reference on many things in Dragon Land. He's always a great source of advice, but tries as best as possible to only help the kids and dragons in solving their own problems.

    Birthday: September 27

Enrique: He's a new character coming to the third season of the program in February 2005. Enrique is raised by his Dad and Grandma and he's recently moved to the area where Max and Emmy live, all the way from Colombia. They meet and show him Dragon Land. At first, he's a bit scared, especially because he finds it hard to connect with people, having moved many times. But soon he's having great adventures in Dragon Land, just like Max and Emmy! Since Zak and Wheezie were left, he rides with them, and they're delighted at the opportunity to have someone to ride with them, since they usually flew only with each other in the past.

Dragon Tales airs weekdays on most PBS stations and also in some foreign markets.

    Zoids

    Zoids

    Cartoon Network
Welcome to the Zoids guide at TV.com In the far reaches of the milkyway, on a planet called Zi, there are powerful machines with superior fighting skills called Zoids. The actual Zoids series is broken down into four mini-series. The four series names are in order of time: Chaotic Century, Guardian Force, New Century Zero, and Fuzors. The first series is Chaotic Century. The first part take place during the war between the two greatest nations on Zi: the Empire and the Republic. Into this chaos enters three different yet connected lives: Van Flyheight, a young Republican who stumbles upon some ancient ruins; Zeek, an Organoid in the ruins who has the capacity to revive and mazimize the potential of Zoids; and Fiona, an ancient Zoidian awakened from her sleep and who now accompanies Van on his journey into destiny. With the help of the kooky Dr. D, the mercenary Irvine, and the independent Moonbay among others, Van inadvertently finds himself on a course to stop the war before it takes a disastrous turn. "Foolish Ambtions should not be given the right to rule the Glorious Guylos Empire" according to Prime Minster Homalef. Prozan wants to get rid of the current Emperor, Rudolph. An eight year old boy, who is destined to be King after his grandfather passed away. He meets up with Van and the gang, who guarantees to protect him and bring him back to Guygalos. With the ancient power of the Deathsaur backing Prozan, and with his flunkie, Raven and Shadow it seems that Prozan will suceed. The following series, Guardian Force takes place several years after the peaceful resolution of the war. In order to help prevent future wars, a Guardian Force is jointly established by the Empire and the Republic. Its mission is to seek out volatile groups and contain them before they can cause more chaos. Because of their influence in the war, Van, Zeek, and Fiona are among the Guardian Force's key members. It is duirng this period that more of the Zoidian secret is revealed as the true battle for the of planet Zi begins! Hiltz, as did Prozan earlier, Hiltz has managed to resurrect the ancient power of the Death Stinger. A power such that exceeds the Deathsaur! The Guardian Force era was aired under the title of Chaotic Century in the US. The Chaotic Century of planet Zi has long since passed into the pages of history. The Zoids that were once instruments of war and destruction now find a place in a new order and a new sport: organized Zoid combat. In essence, a New Century Zero has begun. Originally an unofficial sport, the realm of ruthless groups looking for power and control, that all changed with the establishment of the Zoid Battle Commission, which codified the rules of combat, established official leagues and events, and provided a means of enforcing the rules. Zoid battle thus emerged into the mainstream. Teams of Zoid pilots battle each other to become the top dog in the leagues, and the Blitz Team is preparing to rise to the challenge with the help of a pair of newcomers: Bit Cloud and the unpredictable Zoid Liger Zero. In this new world of organized mech combat, there still dwell elements of chaos, none more dangerous as the Backdraft Group, a rogue Zoids organization out for personal gains and power. Between this and the remaining teams in the league, Blitz Team has its work cut out, but if Bit Cloud is any indication, they're not afraid. Years later, the Zoids battles have shifted scenes to the coliseum. There is something new about this year's Zoids battles. It seems that many Zoids can fuse together for enhanced power and speed. Can RD and his Mach Storm Team successfully compete against these new Zoids Fuzors? Will they unlock the secrets to fusing for their Zoids before it is too late? There's also a new organization lurking in the shadows of Blue City, can RD win battles against the powerful enemy Zoids AND prevent this dark scheme? In the newest saga, 1000 years have passed. Natural disasters have devastated planet Zi, killing off almost all life. Humans have gradually re-established civilization, salvaging ancient Zoids through diving and mining efforts. In a village whose most previous item is a giant sword which they worship as a holy symbol. A teenage boy discovers an ancient Liger-type Zoid while on a deep water salvage operation. Suddenly the village is attacked by skeletal Bio-Zoids intent on stealing a powerful generator located in the village. Our teenage hero awakens the Liger and discovers that the town's sacred sword is the Liger's weapon, together they fight off the mysterious Bio-Zoids. At least for now, and thus begins the Zoids Genesis. Will they be able to help the civilization survive?moreless

    The Backyardigans

    The Backyardigans

    Nickelodeon
The Backyardigans is Nick Jr.'s animated musical adventure series about five high-spirited preschool friends, Uniqua, Pablo, Tyrone, Tasha, and Austin, who rely on their vivid imaginations to embark on amazing, epic adventures. In every episode, the backyard transforms into a new fantastic, photo-real landscape that serves as the backdrop for completely original, story-driven musicals. Broadway-caliber music spanning a variety of genres (including Big Band, Reggae, Rockabilly, Bossa Nova, and Hip-Hop) and cutting-edge 3-D dance choreography propel the stories forward, lending the series a narrative voice that will appeal to preschoolers and parents alike. The series will inspire children to sing and dance along with these lovable characters and stretch their imaginations as they climb up mountains, slide down glaciers, and sail across oceans.

The Backyardigans was created by executive producer Janice Burgess (Little Bill) and is executive-produced and directed by Robert Scull (Little Bill, Whoopi's Littleburg).

    Characters

PABLO: Pablo is, well, wrapped a little too tight. He gets excited by things. Just leaving the house for free play in the backyard can make him babble with joy. He thinks quickly, he speaks quickly, acts and reacts quickly. He gets big ideas but he can be overwhelmed by a situation and panic a little – making him the character most likely to run in a circle flapping his flippers and squawking. (By the way, he's a penguin.) He may not be the most agile or graceful of the friends, but he's probably the most determined and enthusiastic.

UNIQUA: One of a kind. She's funny – she loves to tell silly jokes and to tickle her friends. She's a little mischievous -- she'd be the kid most likely to ring the doorbell and run away. But she's sweet --she'll notice if you're happy or sad and say something about it because she cares about you. Graceful, agile and light on her feet, Uniqua is not afraid of anything and can be quite the daredevil. She loves to run and climb and ride her bike faster than anyone. (Uniqua is her name, and also her species – with her purple skin, pink spots, and dainty antennae, she doesn't look like any other creature on the planet.)

AUSTIN: Austin is the new kangaroo on the block, so he doesn't yet know the other kids really well. That suppresses his natural bounciness and makes him diffident sometimes – a little hesitant to express his opinion, a little slow to take the lead. He really wants to get it right.

TYRONE: The sunny one. He's easygoing – he can get along with anybody – Pablo's his best friend, after all. He takes life's ups and downs in stride --things just don't get under his skin. He's a deep thinker, which may make him seem a little slow on the uptake sometimes. He's confident -- he enjoys a challenge because he knows, in his heart, that he is equal to it. There's always a way and he's bound to figure it out. (And he happens to be a moose.)

TASHA: A little girl hippo, in red mary janes and a flowered dress. Tasha is Uniqua's much-admired and always eagerly-awaited play date. She looks sweet as pie but underneath her extra girly exterior beats the heart of a CEO -- tough-as-nails, take-no-prisoners, my-way-or-the-highway kind of gal. She's rational, skeptical, and highly motivated to get her own way. But it's always special for Uniqua when Tasha is there, because she's someone who can also be giggly, silly and full of fun.

    Theme Song

And we're, Your backyard friends, The Backyardigans Together with The Backyardigans In the place where we belong Where we'll probably sing a song And we'll maybe dance along We've got the whole wide world in our yard to explore We've always find things we've never seen before That's why everyday we're back for more With your friends, The Backyardigans.moreless

    Superman: The Animated Series

    The WB (ended 2000)
"Superman" was an animated series that premiered on September 6, 1996. Created to follow the success of "Batman: The Animated Series," and based on the popular Superman comics created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, the cartoon series focused on the adventures of Superman, an incredibly powerful crime fighter from the planet Krypton, who defends Metropolis from a variety of supercriminals that include Lex Luthor, Brainiac, Metallo, The Parasite, Livewire, The Toyman, Mr. Mxyzptlk, Bizarro, Darkseid, Lobo, Jax-Ur, and Mala. Johnny Bravo tells the story of a biceps-bulging, karate-chopping free spirit, who believes he's a gift from God to the women of the earth. Unfortunately for Johnny, everyone else sees him as a narcissistic Mama's boy with big muscles and even bigger hair. In short, he is the quintessential guy who "just doesn't get it." Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987)

    Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987)

    CBS (ended 1996)
This version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is the most distinctive from its MIRAGE comic origins. It thrived more on humor instead of a dark attitude, especially in earlier seasons. Its creativity and bizarre humor made it something in the late '80s and early '90s something that had never been done before, so it drew in fans and grew to syndication on USA's Cartoon Express and new episodes would be aired weekends on CBS in late 1990.

Four turtles fall into the sewers and are befriended by Hamato Yoshi, a Japanese man who fled from New York and had nowhere to live but in the sewers. He was framed by his enemy, Oroku Saki, in a plot to kill the sensei. One day he sees a strange green glow which transforms the four turtles into human-like creatures. Hamato (now Master Splinter) changes into a giant rat from the green glow and teaches the turtles the skills of the ninja as they team up with Channel 6 news reporter April O'Neil to battle against Yoshi's archenemy Shredder and Krang, an alien warlord from Dimension X. There would be other enemies as well. Season 3 gave new opportunities outside the Shredder storyline, such as Don Turtelli, the Rat King, and Leatherhead. Especially in later CBS episodes, where there were many episodes without the Turtles battling Shredder, enemies such as Pinky McFingers and other minor recurring villains would fight the Turtles as well.

After Season 7, the show took a dark turn towards the action storyline that made it more of a mainstream American adventure cartoon as Dregg and other characters were created and gave the Turtles quite a zealous collection of adventures before they finally faded out in 1996.

In the U.K, TMNT was broadcast under the name Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles due to fears that the "ninja" part of the logo was too extreme a word to use on British television at the time.moreless

    Aladdin

    Aladdin

    (ended 1995)
Aladdin has to be among Disney's greatest and beloved characters ever adapted. It all began in 1992, when "Aladdin", the feature film, was released in theaters. Within its first week, it became a major blockbuster. It grew to be so popular that Disney, in 1994, released a sequel featuring the return of the evil villain from the first film in "The Return Of Jafar". They also created the "Aladdin" TV series. After the last episode aired, Disney wrapped up the tales of Aladdin with the 1996 film "Aladdin and the King Of Thieves". NOTE: But even though it would be correct to classify the three movies as part of the series, they are not official episodes and therefore aren't included in the "first aired" and "last aired" categories. The series won 4 Emmy Awards for Outstanding Film Sound Editing, Outstanding Film Sound Mixing, Outstanding Music Direction and Composition and Outstanding Sound Mixing - Special Class. moreless

    Shin Chan

    Shin Chan

    Cartoon Network
Shin-Chan is FUNimation's version of the popular yet controversial Japanese anime series. Shin is a 5-year-old boy who is constantly doing and saying inappropriate things, with hilarious results, much to the dismay and annoyance of those around him. Shin, along with his family, his friends from kindergarten, and some annoying neighbors, ends up turning every day situations into funny adventures.

Unsure how the show would be initially received, it debuted in late August 2006 on Adult Swim as a test run of six episodes composed of vignettes that were mixed and matched spanning the show's 14 year history. The test run proved to be a success and a complete first season was ordered. FUNimation has made the episodes more mature in content as well as more current with numerous pop culture references.moreless
