The Artists Den began in 2004 with a simple premise: film high-quality live music performances in non-traditional settings. The earliest Artists Den shows took place in intimate living rooms, lending a personal feel to the music that gets lost in most big gigs and recordings. As the series expanded, the venues expanded too. Locations that have since been transformed into performance halls include a 100-year-old ship, a former Archdiocese cathedral, and the diamond floor of Tiffany's. By selecting locations with aesthetic appeal and filling the space with invitation-only audience members, the series has managed to maintain the intimate atmosphere that initially made its shows great, even though the scenery has gotten a lot bigger. The musicians showcased in these performances range from the largely unknown to the well-established. They all share a devotion to the craft of songwriting, a devotion that shows clearly in the tasteful videos produced by The Artists Den.moreless

    PBS
Keeping Score is a musical documentary TV series developed by PBS in conjunction with the San Francisco Symphony that follows host Michael Tilson Thomas as he explores the greats of classical music composers and the inspirations for some of their better-known masterpieces. When Romantic French composer Hector Berlioz wrote his Symphonie fantastique, it had been inspired by more than just a desire to create a beautiful new work of music but instead was fierce and dedicated love letter to a beautiful actress. Michael Tilson Thomas (MTT) throws out the question and hunts down his answer of how Aaron Copland, a Brooklyn Jew, managed to blend the unique sounds of jazz, folk, and hymns to create a sound that to this day is known as being the sound of the 20th Century America. With the original score and its markings, MTT tries to recreate the same journey of Pyotr Illyich Tchaikovsky as the Russian composer rehearsed, fine-tuned, and premiered his Fourth Symphony just as the San Francisco Symphony mirrors the preparation. Keeping Score is a combination of the inspiring history and the modern interpretations of composers and their masterful pieces of music.moreless
