Hockey Night In Canada has been a national institution in Canada since 1952, when Foster Hewitt's familiar "Hello, Canada!" ushered hockey fans into the era of television. The first NHL game to be televised on Canadian Broadcasting Company was a game in Montreal on Oct. 11, 1952 and the first Finals in 1953, which were broadcast in French on CBC Radio-Canada only in Quebec, perhaps only in the Montreal area. Rene Lecavalier was the play-by-play man and only the three games in Montreal were televised. English language telecasts began in 1954 with Danny Gallivan at the microphone. Danny was followed by Bill Hewitt and Bob Cole were the primary play-by-play announcers through the 2008 Finals. Beginning in 2009, Jim Hughson took over the play-by-play duties with Craig Simpson alongside for color commentary.

The Finals telecasts have been hosted by Ron McLean since 1987. He also hosts the popular Coach's Corner with the outspoken Don Cherry.moreless

The Primetime Emmy Awards

Once a year, television's royalty gathers together for a ceremony honoring the best of the best of primetime TV. Shows, actors, and writers are all given a chance to take home a coveted Emmy statue--but in order to win, they must pass the mysterious and rigorous selection process of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Millions of people tune in to watch each year's ceremony and find out if their favorite shows and actors have been recognized or ignored, and the results can often make or break a series or career. The Emmy statue, depicting a winged woman holding an atom, was developed in 1948 by Louis McManus. The statue is meant to signify the arts, through the female figure, and the sciences, through the atom. The name for the award is taken from "Immy," a slang term for "image orthicon tube," an ingredient of many early television cameras. Since the figure is female, "Emmy" seemed more suitable to the Academy.moreless

Golden Globe Awards

Near the end of each year, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association gathers to recognize outstanding achievement in film and television. Nominees are announced in December, and the awards ceremony is held and televised in mid-January. It's one of television's most intimate, spontaneous, and fun events. The profits made from the Golden Globe Awards are donated to entertainment - related charities by the HFPA. The organization offers scholarships to budding entertainers and supports educational institutions educating people on film and television.moreless

The Grammy Awards

In similar fashion to their film equivalent (The Academy Awards), The Grammys is an awards show that honors the achievements of the members of the professional music recording industry through a voting system. The members of the Recording Academy vote on who they think is most deserving of an award in 108 categories as specified by the academy. Each year the awards are presented during a live telecast that was begun in 1971 by ABC, but has since been televised by CBS after they bought it in 1973. They were initially known as the Gramophone Awards this is because the trophy itself is a golden gramophone but later they became the Grammys.moreless

The Discover Orange Bowl is one of the oldest college football bowl games in existence having been played annually since 1935. It is a member of the prestigious Bowl Championship Series collection of bowl games along with the Rose, Fiesta and Sugar Bowls. Played in Miami, Florida, the Discover Orange Bowl is the guaranteed destination of the ACC champion unless they are playing in the national championship game. Historically, the Orange Bowl was known for hosting the Big Eight champions until the birth of the BCS. Oklahoma (18) and Nebraska (17) are the overall leaders in appearances in the Orange Bowl game as a result. In 1989, FedEx become the official sponsor of the Orange Bowl. However, the 2011 game was the first Discover Orange Bowl as Discover Card has become the new sponsor. Stanford University defeated Virginia Tech University in that game. The U.S. Presidential Inauguration has been broadcast on national television since the 2nd Inauguration of Harry S. Truman in 1949. The Presidential Inauguration of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States took place on January 20th, 2009. The inauguration ceremony was telecast on FOX, ABC, NBC and all major television and news networks. It is believed to be one of the most watched events of all time by a global audience. Following the events of the 2008 Presidential campaign, the inauguration was particularly noteworthy for several reasons. Perhaps most notably, Mr. Obama was the first ever African American voted into office. Secondly, his election represented a political culture shift because he was the first man born after 1960 elected President. Fox political analysts and others believe he won the Presidency by breaking away from the status quo of Washington politics and demonstrating a fresh approach to the many problems facing the nation, including two wars and a downturn in the economy. Several events accompanied the inauguration, including a train ride recreating the route taken by Abraham Lincoln, concerts, parades, church services and ten post inaugural balls, many of which were available for the public to watch online.moreless
