Magilla Gorilla

(ended 1965)

Magilla Gorilla, an animated series produced by Hanna-Barbera, was the story of a pet store gorilla that nobody seemed to want. Magilla Gorilla, looking loveable in his hat and a bow tie, was usually purchased in every episode. However, after having an adventure of some sort, he would be brought back to the store for a refund by the end of the episode. At the end of the episode, Mr. Peebles the pet store owner, who was highly motivated to get rid of Magilla for good, would utter the catchphrase, "We'll try again next week." The only real hope for Magilla was a little girl named Ogee who always wanted to buy Magilla but never seemed to have enough money. Her voice is also heard in the theme song, when she asks "How much is that gorilla in the window?" The show also had animated segments with other cartoon characters, including Punkin' Puss and Mushmouse and Ricochet Rabbit and Droop-A-Long. Magilla Gorilla was one of the few cartoons that actually began its run in syndication and was not picked up by a network (ABC) until 1 January 1966. When the show was picked up by ABC the popular Ricochet Rabbit and Droop-a-Long segments were switched out for Breezly and Sneezly segments. After 1966 Ricochet Rabbit and Droop-a-Long appeared on the Peter Potamus and his Magic Flying Balloon show, which was doing poorly in the ratings. Another interesting note is that the show was created in conjunction with Ideal Toys in an effort to market a line of toys to consumers Magilla was voiced by veteran character actor Allan Melvin, who was also known as the character "Sam the Butcher", Alice's boyfriend in the The Brady Bunch. Other voices include Howard Morris as Mr. Peebles and Jean Vander Pyl as Ogee. Magilla Gorilla Theme Song We've got a gorilla for sale...a yellow gorilla for sale. Davey and Goliath

This classic series is about the adventures of a boy and his dog. This classic kids show, created by the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America provided entertainment, comedy, and moral lessons for young children. Although the scripts for this show were written by the Lutheran church of America, the team Art and Gloria Clokey (best known for their hit "Gumby") did all the claymation. Art and Gloria were thrilled to do this especially because they felt that it would be their way of contributing what children need to hear. This is a gem, and in 2003/2004 it is scheduled to return with all new shows.moreless

Touché Turtle and Dum Dum

Each episode starts off with Touché popping forth from inside his shell. He then gets a phone call from someone who's in dire straits. His phone usually rests upon a sterling silver plate. Touché accepts all major credit cards. Thus, Touché and Dum-Dum go off into the crime scene and do their shtick, which may involve swordplay, box-fighting, martial arts, tom-foolery, work with pyrotechnics/explosives ...and so on. "Touché-Away!!" The original show of 52 episodes first aired on TV between September 1962 and August 1963. Touché and Dum Dum have appeared together in only a handful of 1960s-early 1970s H-B comic books, and both also showed up on Hanna-Barbera's 50th anniversary special in 1988 (you may find that on video).moreless

Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons

"The finger is on the trigger... about to unleash a force with terrible powers, beyond the comprehension of man. This force we shall know as, the Mysterons. This man will be our hero, for fate will make him indestructible. His name, Captain Scarlet." -- introduction by Captain Blue (Ed Bishop). Captain Scarlet And The Mysterons debuted on the U.K. terrestrial television network, ATV (the Midlands region only, at first), on Friday, 29 September 1967 at 5:25 p.m. After the "The Mysterons" was aired, the series immediately began to attract to-be addicted fans of all ages, and since then, it still has, with credit due to several re-runs on the likes of ITV (1985-1986), BBC 2 (1993-1994/2001-2002 - the channel which aired the digitally re-mastered prints for the first time, cleaned up and painstakingly restored by BBC Resources and Carlton), Sky One (2002-2003), and in the mid-90s, Bravo. The remaining 31 episodes were aired throughout the autumn and winter seasons of 1967, ending with ATV transmitting the series' final episode, "The Inquisition" on Tuesday 14th May 1968. Although only 32 episodes were produced, they all still consist of unique, though-provoking and original entertainment, in both adult-written and well-structured script-writing (with special thanks to script editor Tony Barwick, who wrote an amazing 18 scripts, and was shockingly not credited for this), expensive and truly-realistic miniature special effects and pyrotechnics (with a second thanks to the late Derek Meddings, who worked on various 1974-1995 James Bond 007 motion pictures, all 3 of the original Superman motion pictures and the original Batman movie) and the most advanced puppet techniques tested and tried to the limit and brought to our screens.moreless

Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends

Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends is a classic early 1960s cartoon comedy show produced by Jay Ward Productions. The show ran for 5 years and aired on both the ABC and NBC television network. The show's two main characters are Rocky J. Squirrel, a brave flying squirrel and his best pal, Bullwinkle, a dumb and clumsy moose living in the town of Frostbite Falls, Minnesota. The series usually involves their misadventures involving enemies Boris and Natasha, the dastardly Russian spy duo bent on ending the noble antics of "moose and squirrel" and thereby gaining power over the fictional nation of Pottsylvania. Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends also featured short bookend stories- most notably Dudley Do-Right, the clueless Canadian Mountie always saving damsels from the villainous Snidely Whiplash, and another bookend involving Sherman and Peabody, a boy and dog brainiac who travel through time to discover the real story behind historical events and right the wrongs to make sure the events actually happen. Fun, vintage and famous for using groan-worthy puns, Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends is great for kids and kids at heart.moreless

The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show

Rocky and Bullwinkle began life in the 1950's television show, The Frostbite Falls Review. It was created by Jay Ward and Bill Scott. Their names in that show were Rocket J. Squirrel and Canadian Moose. The Frostbite Falls Review was not very successful so Rocky and Bullwinkle became the stars of their own show, Rocky and His Friends. The show was co-created by Alex Anderson and premiered on November 29th, 1959 on ABC. Added to the cast were Boris and Natasha, two Pottsylvanian spies. The show also featured various segments; Peabody's Improbable History, Fractured Fairy Tales, Mr. Know-It-All, and Aesop and Son. In 1961, the show moved to NBC and was renamed The Bullwinkle Show. In 1964 the creators moved the show back to ABC where it was cancelled at the end of that season. The next year the show did reappear back on ABC; Bullwinkle and Rocky were replaced by Hoppity Hooper, while the other segments remained. The show ran on ABC until 1974. It was then syndicated under the name of The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle. In 1996, The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle was picked up by Turner Broadcasting's Cartoon Network. It has since moved to the classic cartoon network, Boomerang where it is still running today.moreless

The Archie Show

CBS (ended 1969)

Dan Goldwater's famous red-headed teen from the comics comes to animated life in this series, via the Filmation cartoon studio. Some graphic liberties are taken, but for the most part, it was quite faithful to the comics.

Two Archie cartoons are featured (in which Jughead gains a pet, a big, white sheepdog named Hot Dog). In between was a dance instruction segment (featuring movements no human could do without sustaining a traumatizing injury) followed by a song by the Archies. The show would beget a hit single in 1968, "Bang Shang-A-Lang," released by musical supervisor Don Kirschner on his self-labeled record company. Two bumpers featuring blackouts starring Jughead were also featured.

The Archie show was so popular the first year that it would spawn a number of new versions, including The Archie Comedy Hour, Archie's Funhouse, Archie's TV Funnies and U.S. Of Archie.moreless

Quick Draw MCGraw

CBS (ended 1966)

Quick Draw was usually depicted in his shorts (which were set in the American Old West) as a sheriff. Quick Draw was often accompanied by his deputy, a Mexican burro with a stereotypical Spanish accent named Baba Looey, who was also voiced by Butler. Quick Draw was depicted as a satire of the westerns that were popular among the American public at the time. His personality was well intentioned, but somewhat dim; oftentimes, Baba Looey would make a more accurate assessment of the problem at hand than Quick Draw would. Whenever that happened, Quick Draw would often utter his catchphrase: "Now hoooooold on thar, Baba Looey! I'll do the thinnin' [thinking] around here, and doooon't you forget it!" Quick Draw also spoke with a heavy drawl, as shown by his catchphrase. Although Quick Draw was himself a horse, this did not stop the show's producers from depicting him riding into town on a "real" horse, or, as seen in the show's opening credits, driving a stagecoach pulled by "real" horses into a town. This aspect was made light of in the 1980s made-for-television film The Good, the Bad, and Huckleberry Hound, which featured Quick Draw. In a series of episodes, Quick Draw would also assume the identity of the masked vigilante, "El Kabong" (a parody of Zorro). As El Kabong, Quick Draw would attack his foes by swooping down on a rope and hitting them on the head with an acoustic guitar, producing a distinctive kabong sound and destroying the guitar in the process. Quick Draw McGraw's supporting characters in The Quick Draw McGraw Show's two other segments were Augie Doggie and Doggie Daddy, a father-and-son pair of dogs, and Snooper and Blabber, a pair of detectives who were a cat and a mouse.moreless

Speedy Gonzales

The WB

Speedy Gonzales is the famous Warner Bros. cartoon Mexican mouse part of WB's long running Loony Tunes. The toon mouse was created by Robert Mckimson and Friz Freleng (until redesigned by Hawly Pratt) and first aired in the 1953 cartoon Cat-Tails for Two. He was originally voiced by Mel Blanc, who created Speedy's famous call "Â¡Ãndale! Â¡Ãndale! Â¡Arriba! Â¡Arriba (which is spanish for "Go on! Go on! Up!Up!). Speedy is always seen wearing a large yellow sombrero, a red bandana, and white shirt and pants. He gets is name from being the fastest mouse in all of mexico (though he runs faster than any human can too). There have been forty six Speedy Gonzales cartoons made so far, and many of the lovable Loony Tunes characters are featured in them - such as Sylvester the cat. The 1955 the Speedy animated short won the Academy Award for Best Short Subject (cartoons). In recent years, the Speedy Gonzales cartoons sparked controversy for their depiction of stereotypes against latin americans, and thus taken off the air. However due to their popularity within the Latin community, they were brought back with a disclaimer.moreless

Tennesse Tuxedo & His Tales

Tennessee Tuxedo & His Tales was created by Total Television and animated in Mexico by the Gamma studios. It was created in response to FCC chairman Newton R. Minow's charge that television was a "vast wasteland," so inserted into the cartoon frivolity was a bit of education. Tennessee, a penguin, and his walrus pal Chumley, always sought ways to better themselves by trying to do things man could do, but it would usually if not always backfire, much to the chagrin of Megapolis Zoo keeper Stanley Livingstone. Faced with a dilemma, Tennesse and Chumley would break out of the zoo and visit Phineas J. Whoopee, an inventor who with his three-dimensional blackboard would draw out and explain a variety of different things, such as the invention of the light bulb and the telephone, how cars operate, how TV cameras work, or how suits of armor were first used. Don Adams, TV's Maxwell Smart (and later Inspector Gadget) gave voice to Tennessee. Larry Storch (F Troop) was Mr. Whoopee, and Bradley Bolke as Chumley. Also included in the show were repeats from Tooter Turtle and The King & Odie. After its run on CBS, Tennessee Tuxedo & His Tales moved to ABC where it aired Sunday afternoons starting in 1966. In 1967, it was paired with The Beagles, which aired on CBS the year before.moreless

Birdman and the Galaxy Trio

Like many superheroes at the time, Birdman was created by Hanna-Barbara's Alex Toth. Along side were the three playmates in the second half. The Galaxy Trio. The Galaxy Trio were three superheroes who fought crime. They were quite similar to the Fantastic Four. People seem to mistake Birdman for another great superheroe of the time, Space Ghost. Birdmans only weaknesses include 1;He is solar powered if there is no sun he has no power. and 2;The crest on top of his head is another scource of his power. Birdman episodes are treated as season 1, Galaxy Trio episodes are treated as season 2.moreless

The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Hour

Spun-off from ABC's prime time series The Bugs Bunny Show and the CBS Saturday morning series The Road Runner Show.The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Hour was the most succesful and popular attempt to bring the classic Looney Tunes cartoons to Saturday morning television where they became a mainstay for more than three decades. The series presented popular animated shorts which were originally produced for the silver screen, where they would appear right before a major motion picture, but here they were introduced by new segments as well as new title cards not shown in the original theatrical versions. Also included were Road Runner cartoons originally shown on the The Road Runner Show. Many people who grew up watching this show will most likely remember it by the opening theme "This Is It" performed by Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck which was shown in black & white when it was created for The Bugs Bunny Show but then shown in color and remodified specifically for this Saturday morning series. In the late '70s The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Hour eventually became The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Show when CBS decided to add an additional 30 minutes to each episode.moreless

Fractured Fairy Tales

Fractured Fairy Tales is the animated series which was a segment of The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show. Rocky and Bullwinkle is the 1960's cartoon featuring a flying squirrel named Rocket "Rocky" J. Squirrel, and his best friend the dim-witted moose Bullwinkle J. Moose. The pair lives in the fictional town of Frostbite Falls, Minnesota, and fights against villains of Pottsylvania, including Boris Godunov and Natasha Fatale. The series featured supporting short segments, including Dudley Do-Right of the Mounties, Aesop & Son, Peabody's Improbable History, and Fractured Fairy Tales. In Fractured Fairy Tales, familiar fairy tales and children's stories are flipped upside down, with modern twists and altered storylines. Stingray

"Stand by for Action! We're about to launch Stingray! Anything can happen within the next half hour!"

These were the words spoken by Commander Shore at the beginning of each episode of Stingray, the first Gerry Anderson Supermarionation show to be made in colour.

Set in the year 2064, Stingray is about the World Aquanaut Security Patrol (WASP) who patrol the world's oceans, helping and defeating underwater races. The pride of WASP is the revolutionary submarine Stingray, which is controlled by Captain Troy Tempest and Lieutenant George Lee Sheridan, better known as "Phones".

The WASP headquarters at Marineville, a huge complex, 10 miles inland. The heart of WASP operations is the control tower, where Commander Sam Shore, Lt. Atlanta Shore (also his daughter) and Sub-Lieutenant Fisher can control and communicate with the entire WASP organization.

When Marineville is under surface attack, Battle Stations sound. What happens next is that the whole complex sinks beneath the ground on massive hydraulic platforms. Huge concrete blast doors then protect the base, as well as WASP Interceptor and hydraulic missiles.

The WASP call is "PWOR" (Proceed With Orders Received).

The main villain of the WASPs is Titan who rules the underwater city of Titanica and has sworn to invade the surface world. His slaves are the Aquaphibians, who control mechanical fish called Terror Fish, armed with deadly missiles that have destroyed many unsuspecting victims. Titan is also assisted by Surface Agent X20, who talks incredibly like Peter Lorre. X20 can infiltrate Marineville through cunning disguises. He lives in an old house on the Island of Lemoy, where he can communicate with Titanica by pressing a button in his living room, which changes the room into a communication centre within seconds!

Before becoming a member of the WASPs, Marina, a tailless, voiceless mermaid was the slave of Titan before Troy Tempest rescued her from his clutches. Her father, Aphony is the ruler of the underwater city Pacifica. Marina and her people have been sworn to silence by Titan, who said if they were to speak again, they would be destroyed.

Occasionally, Marina accompanies Troy and Phones on their missions and sometimes Atlanta goes in place of her if they feel the mission is unsuitable for Marina. Troy has love interests for both women. Rarely seen on missions is a seal named Oink.

Each episode ended with a song called "Aqua Marina" which was composed by Barry Gray and sung by Gary Miller.

Not only was Stingray the first Supermarionation series to be made in colour, it was also the first British TV series to be made in colour! The series has also been repeated on BBC 2 over 1992-4 and 2001/2 and recently on weekday mornings over 2003/4. It has also been shown on Sky One.moreless

The Perils of Penelope Pitstop was one of the two spin-offs of Wacky Races. (The other being Dastardly & Muttley in their Flying Machines.) Every episode, The Ant Hill Mob (Clyde, Dum Dum, Softy, Yuk Yuk, Snoozy, Zippy & Pockets) must protect Penelope from 'The Hooded Claw' and his henchmen, The Bully Brothers. 'The Hooded Claw' is really Penelope's guardian (Sylvester Sneekley) in disguise and wants to wipe out Penelope so that he can have her inheritence. This is one of those cartoons in the late 60s and early 70s that were short-lived, but was one of the best spin-offs created by Hanna-Barbera.moreless

Dino Boy is an animated young adult show produced by Kids WB. It stars Todd, a young boy, and his caveman friend Ugh. They adventure together through a lush South American valley filled with prehistoric friends and foes after Todd straps on a parachute and jumps out of the crashing plane that was carrying his whole family. Along the way, he learns the value of independence as well as the value and necessity of working with others as a team. Todd even finds a pet, and takes on the responsibilities of caring for Bronto with great enthusiasm. Dangers abound as the trio continues their adventure, but allies in the valley are as plentiful as enemies, and there is a Bronto or Ugh for every saber-toothed tiger encountered. Colorful, well-voiced and cleverly animated, Dino Boy is a great bet for anyone looking for a fun, educational experience to share with a child.moreless
