    Teletubbies

    Teletubbies

    BBC (ended 2001)
The Teletubbies started in the U.K. and proved to be a popular children's show. In April 1998, the U.S.A. picked up the Teletubbies on PBS, and proved to be popular with American children too. Teletubbies is a show about creatures known as Teletubbies (so called because they're tubby, and have TV screens in their stomachs). The Teletubbies live in Teletubbyland, and faraway place inhabited by only the Teletubbies, talking flowers, talking trumpets, a baby sun, the Noo-Noo, a bunch of rabbits, and the narrator. There house is known as "The Tubby-Tronic Superdome", and has everything they need, four beds, a tubby-toast maker, a tubby-custard makers, and a slide used as an alternate entrance. In the middle of their dome, they have a panel of switches and buttons and their tubby sponges which they use to bathe themselves. Each day, the Teletubbies discover new things together, watch videos on their tubby-screens, and have fun together. In Teletubbyland, there's a large windmill, and when it spins pink dust, it let's the teletubbies know that something magical is about to happen. The Teletubbies were developed in U.K. by Ragdoll and BBC. Characters Tinky-Winky The largest of the four teletubbies. He is purple, and has a triangle antenna (because of these features, critics assume he is gay, but rest assure, he isn't, he may be a tom-girl, but he's not gay.) His favorite thing is his hand-bag which he can amazingly fit large things in. His best friends are Dipsy and Po. He may be large, but he's quiet and gentle. His song is "Tinkle-Winkle, Tinky-Winky" Dipsy The second largest teletubby. He is green with a dipstick antenna. His favorite thing is his black and white tie-dye top hat. His best friends are Tinky-Winky and Laa-Laa. He's more of a loner teletubby, and doesn't like "cute" stuff. His song has a reggae beat. Laa-Laa The second smallest teletubby. She is yellow, with a spiral antenna. Her favorite thing his her giant orange ball that she seems to have no control of. Her best friends are all of the teletubbies. She has a free-spirit and can always find away to enjoy things, her favorite word is "nice." Her song is "La la la la la la la la." Po The smallest teletubby. She is red, with an "O" shaped antenna. Her favorite thing is her red and blue scooter which she can ride at an alarming speed. Her best friends are Tinky-Winky and Laa-Laa. She is very quiet and usually shy, but loves to go fast. Her song is "Fidy Fidy, Mar Mar Mar" Noo-Noo The Teletubbie's vacuum cleaner that can suck up anything in his path, even things twice his size. He lives inside the Tubby-tronic Superdome. Trumpets Trumpets that come out of the ground and sing songs or recite poems for the Teletubbies to enjoy. Baby Sun A sun with a baby's face in it. Narrator Basically tells the story, or what the Teletubbies "what to do". Show Secrets -The teletubbies in real-life are huge, the costumes can reach up to 10 feet! -After ten minutes, the actors have to remove the Teletubby heads from their costumes due to carbon dioxide build up. -Nikki Smedley landed the part of Laa-Laa when she was make-believing she was a table at the audition. -The Noo-Noo is operated by a small man inside him. Alot of people have been saying that Teletubbies is teaching their kids to be gay. That is a lie. Teletubbies is a show for kids to have fun. Max and Ruby

    Max and Ruby

    Nickelodeon
In creator Rosemary Wells's own words, she explains the show's goal:

"Max and Ruby celebrates the relationship between Ruby and her younger brother, Max, and the universal nature of sibling relationships. It's as common an experience to many childhoods as Band-aids and birthdays. And what makes the relationship in the series compelling is that I've added salt and pepper to it, instead of sugar."

The residents of the show's universe are all rabbits which children (and even adults!) will find quite adorable. The superb animation appears to have been done on computer (not three dimensional, though) and the artwork itself is very, very well done. The characters' expressions, especially Max's mischievous look, and behaviors are worth watching!

Interestingly, we never see the parents of Max and Ruby, making it look like they live by themselves in a big house. This has come under criticism by many parents. However, their neighbor-grandmother and other adults do make frequent appearances.

Rosemary Wells has created many books and shows, such as Timothy Goes to School among others.

    Cast

Max. An enthusiastic and determined three-year-old who speaks no more than a few words each show. Often at odds with his sister mainly because she doesn't understand him or doesn't want him to do some certain things (such as making noises). He tends to get things his way at the end, though!

Ruby. Max's seven-year-old sister, a very smart, goal-oriented and responsible (albeit bossy) young lady. Almost in every episode, Ruby is frustrated by Max getting into messes or disobeying her, but she displays a tremendous amount of patience while she tries to set him straight.

Grandma. Grandmother of Max and Ruby, she lives next-door and often pays them a visit, or vice versa. A c grandmother both in personality and appearance: kind-hearted, generous, crow's feet, and a sweet smile.

Louise. Best friend of Ruby's, they have a lot of things in common, including being related to curious little boys. Louise is in Bunny Scouts along with Ruby and Valerie.

Morris. Louise's cousin who is a year or so younger than Max. Appears in very few episodes. (Thanks, Kerry & her daughter for pointing out that Morris is a cousin, not a brother of Louise's.)

Valerie. Another friend of Ruby's as well as Louise's. She wears glasses and is an intelligent, funny girl. She's also in the Bunny Scouts.

Martha. One of Ruby's friends and a Bunny Scout, although she appeared in only two episodes or so. Didn't speak much.

Roger Piazza. Even though the only words he utters are "uh-huh" and "nuh-uh", he is perceived as the cool kid by Ruby and her friends. The "jock" type of boy, he's several months older than Ruby. ("He's seven and a half years old!" gushes Ruby in an episode.)

The Huffington Family. The family is composed of sweet-tooth Mr. Huffington, friendly Mrs. Huffington, and their adorable kid Baby Huffington. They're well-known locals/neighbors, and Mrs. Huffington often asks Ruby to babysit Baby Huffington.

Candi. She runs a local candy store and is very generous with candies.

Rosalinda. The owner of the town's gift shop. Always willing to lend a paw.

Bunny Scout Leader. (Anyone know her name?) The Bunny Scout Leader guides the girls through the activities to earn their badges. Yes, it's the bunny version of the Girls Scout.

Mr. Piazza. Roger's father. He owns and runs the grocery store which Roger sometimes helps out at.

Katie. Owner of a restaurant; she's also the waitress. Not a frequent character and played a role in Ruby's Surprise Party episode.moreless

    Madeline

    Madeline

    Disney Channel (ended 2007)
In an old house in Paris that was covered with vines, lived twelve little girls in two straight lines... the smallest one was Madeline. First aired in the early 90's, Madeline is a 30-minute animated feature based on the books by Ludwig Bemelmans. The show basically features the adventures of Madeline, her friends, Miss Clavel and Pepito. Each episode spots them going on adventure, and an original song. The original "Madeline" was a production from 1952 that was shown as an animated opener in movie theaters. The next 6 were television specials that were the work of Cinar animation. "Madeline" was picked up as a regular series in 1993 on The Family Channel. Production of episodes was moved to DiC studios. The series ran for 2 seasons during that time. In 2000, the show came back, now running as "The New Adventures Of Madeline". Inspector Gadget

    Inspector Gadget

    (ended 1986)
Inspector Gadget was a cartoon parody of the 1960's television spy parody, Get Smart. Don Adams played the leads in both shows. There are similarities between the two shows. Both agents only had lots of gadgets or devices that they never could use correctly. Both worked for a chief that they invariably infuriated. And of course, both Gadget and Smart were lovable idiots who always won in the end, usually by accident or by someone else's help. Created by DIC Entertainment, this show was voiced in Canada and Los Angeles, drawn in Korea, edited in Los Angeles and distributed by DIC International. First produced as a 1/2 hour pilot in 1983, it was picked up and produced until 1986 for TV. Years later, Inspector Gadget is seen in 55 countries in 24 languages. Spinoffs: Gadget Boy and Heather, Gadget Boy's Adventures in History, Inspector Gadget's Field Trip and Gadget and the Gadgetinis. A liveaction theatrical movie based on the cartoon was released in 1999, as well as a liveaction direct-to-video sequel in 2003.moreless

    Alvin & the Chipmunks

    Alvin & the Chipmunks

    NBC (ended 1991)
This show focuses on three superstar chipmunks who have their own band and the crazy adventures they get into. It also features The Chipettes, their female counterparts and girlfriends. If you have any info, please contribute. Broadcast History ----------------- During its run, Alvin & the Chipmunks, existed in 2 forms... Alvin & the Chipmunks (or The Chipmunks (seasons 6-7)) (Seasons 1-7): All of the original episodes have aired on NBC. The Chipmunks Go To the Movies (Season 8): This also aired on NBC, but not as traditional episodes. All of the episodes were spoofs of famous movies. The Characters Alvin Seville Alvin is the oldest of the chipmunks, and also the lead singer of their group. He is most often the one who gets them into trouble, (usually in an attempt to get rich or famous) and tends to be selfish, self centered, and conceited at times. He really hates to be alone and is VERY vain about his looks, although he does suffer from 'small munk complex'. (his height). Regardless of all this, he is very protective of his brothers. Simon Seville Simon is the middle brother of the chipmunks and is considered the brain of the group. He is always the voice of reason and logic behind Alvin's crazy schemes, and usually (unsuccessfully), tries to talk him out of following these crazy ideas.. He is very level headed in tough situations and is a strong believer in following the rules-- though occasionally he does break them along with his brothers to make sure they don't get into too much trouble... In his spare time, he enjoys reading and studying. Theodore Seville Theodore is the youngest chipmunk, considered the nicest out of all the chipmunks and can get along with just about anyone-- although he does tend to be shy at times. He loves to eat and almost always seems to be hungry. He also enjoys cooking and baking in his spare time-- ( which helps explain his cute little plump figure) and tends to scare easily. He usually gets really nervous when he's around a girl he likes, and tends to be a little slow when it comes to learning in school. David "Dave" Seville Dave is the Chipmunks adoptive father, and also their manager. He found the boys after they were abandoned on his doorstep, and loves them as if they were his own. But Alvin is always driving him crazy with his schemes, causing him to yell his name in exasperation. Brittany Miller Brittany is the oldest of her sisters, and also the lead singer of their group. She can be egotistical and selfish, just like Alvin at times, and is EXTREMELY vain about her looks. She enjoys acting, modeling, and singing-- and is constantly competing with the Chipmunks over whose group is better. Since she is supposed to be the counterpart of Alvin, she too is always coming up with different ideas on how to get rich and famous. And again, just like Alvin, she tends to be very protective of her sisters-- although at times, it takes her awhile.... Jeanette Miller Jeanette is the brains of the group, and also the nice one, though she is very clumsy. Yet her personality doesn't resemble Simon's very much (except for her intelligence). In that respect, she is much more like Theodore. She is very kind towards her sisters, and tends to be quiet and shy. She is very confident about who she is, however, and doesn't seem to care what other people think about her. In her spare time she enjoys reading and studying. Eleanor Miller Just like Theodore, Eleanor loves to cook and bake, and because of it, is a little plump. Here though, the similarity ends. Her personality is not really like Theodore's at all: in reality, it's actually closer to Simon's than anyone else's. Like him, she is usually the one who tries to talk Brittany out of following her crazy schemes and tends to gets extremely annoyed and complains when her sister does something stupid. In a way, however, she is also a lot like Alvin: she is very athletic and good at almost every sport and would do anything to help her sisters. In this way, I think Eleanor is supposed to be a combination of all the Chipmunks, even though she is usually meant to represent Theodore's counterpart. Miss Beatrice Miller Miss Miller is the strange, eccentric, but nice, old lady who lives next door to the Chipmunks. She also happens to have a crush on Dave! She eventually ends up raising the Chipettes. Harry A sneaky, greedy, con-artist chipmunk who originally pretends to be the Chipmunks' long-lost mother's younger brother, in order to get them to work for him, with minimum wage: (or nothing at all). The Chipmunks eventually figure out that he's not really their uncle, and so successfully scheme to take the money he made off of them, and leave, returning to Dave. Harry, however, makes several more appearances throughout the television series. At his last, he even cons the Chipettes. Vinny, the Chipmunks' Mother Eventually, the Chipmunks go searching for their long-lost mother, Vinny, and after days of a treacherous search, actually manage to find her! At first, everyone's happy, but eventually Alvin gets upset since he doesn't understand why she abandoned them. Vinny explains that the year she abandoned them there was a horrible winter and all of the animals in the forest were forced to leave their homes because of it. The fact that they were so young, forced her to realize that they wouldn't survive the journey if she brought them with her. So instead, Vinny decided to leave them with a nice man who was always kind to the forest animals (Dave). She said, "Giving up her babies was the hardest thing she ever did," and then told them that when spring came and she could finally return to get them, she saw how happy they were with Dave, and thought they'd be better off with him. Eventually, Alvin forgives Vinny, and they all part ways on a good note: promising to keep in touch. Theme Song Lyrics "Watch out...cause here we come! It's been a while but we're back in style So get set to have some fun We'll bring you action and satisfaction We're the Chipmunks C-H-I-P-M-U-N-K We're the Chipmunks Guaranteed to brighten your day When you feel like a laugh Give us a call we'll give you our all And if you feel like a song Tune in to us and sing right along We're the Chipmunks Coming on stronger than ever before We're the Chipmunks Alvin, Simon, Theodore! Do-do, do-do-do-do!"moreless

    My Little Pony

    My Little Pony

    (ended 1992)
Based on one of the most beloved toylines of the 1980's, My Little Pony started out as a couple of animated specials and a feature film before finally becoming a cartoon series. Its various incarnations told the adventures of the little ponies and all of their friends as they lived in the beautiful Dream Valley. There were literally dozens of ponies of all different colors and they were divided into Earth ponies, Unicorns, and Pegasus ponies. All were fundamentally magical beings and each had a small picture on her back that reflected her name or personality. The ponies' most cherished friend is Megan, a young girl of about 13 who was brought to Ponyland to help them in their darkest hour. She continued to visit her friends and often served as leader when trouble struck. Eventually, her younger brother Danny (probably 11) and sister Molly (around 9) met the ponies, and the three of them came to stay in Ponyland for extended visits. There were many different beings who lived in Ponyland besides the ponies. Those who were seen most frequently were Spike (a baby dragon), the Moochick (an absent-minded magician), the Bushwoolies (multicolored fur balls who all seemed to act as one) and the Grundles (friendly troll creatures who tunneled underground). They were always willing to lend a hand when a lesson needed to be learned or villains threatened Dream Valley. The show featured original songs and lessons about teamwork, love, kindness, and bravery. The stories began as 15-minute episodes, but eventually they were expanded into multi-part 15-minute episodes. These were shown alongside other cartoons in a half-hour block titled "My Little Pony and Friends" which included The Moon Dreamers and The Potato Head Kids before being given their own half-hour time slot. In 1992 the Disney Channel would create a new series featuring brand-new ponies with a more preteen spin on the storylines called My Little Pony Tales, which is featured in this guide as Season 3. The Disney Channel would continue to show these episodes for many years in syndication.moreless
