On January 14 1952, The Today Show, a long running morning news program on NBC, went on the air. It aired at 7:00 A.M. (Eastern Time) as a 2-hour news and information show. For many years it was a 2-hour program from 7:00 to 9:00 ET, until NBC expanded it to 3 hours (7-10 A.M. Eastern Time) on October 2, 2000. On September 10, 2007 a fourth hour was added to the show. Today was the first of its genre when it first signed on with host Dave Garroway. The show successfully blends national news headlines, in-depth interviews with newsmakers, lifestyle features, other light news and gimmicks (including the presence of the chimpanzee J. Fred Muggs as the show's mascot during the early years), and local news updates. It has spawned several other shows of a similar type, including ABC's Good Morning America, CBS's The Early Show, and the Canadian series, Canada AM. The show is filmed and produced at studio 1A in Rockefeller Center, New York, just across the street from NBC headquarters at the GE Building. The studio is located right next to the street and many times the hosts do the weather or other events from outside. Today was the brainchild of Pat Weaver, who was then vice-president of NBC. Later, he became president of the company from 1953 to 1955, and then served as chairman of the board for another year. The show is currently hosted by Meredith Viera and Matt Lauer. Al Roker does weather updates and Ann Curry reads news headlines. Gene Shalit is the entertainment critic. Previous hosts have included Bryant Gumbel, Jane Pauley, Deborah Norville, Tom Brokaw, Barbara Walters, Hugh Downs, and Flyod Kalber. Popular former weathercaster Willard Scott still appears on the show daily doing the 100th birthday announcements he first became famous for in the 1980s.moreless

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart

Forget the 24 hour biased left wing news media, the best fake news show in the world will provide you with all the news you can handle. The Daily Show is a comedic view of recent news headlines and political figures through a series of satirical monologues by Jon Stewart along with segments by "correspondents" and finally interviews with guest celebrities and political figures. Craig Kilborn (SportsCenter) was the original host until the fourth season when Jon Stewart (The Jon Stewart Show) came in to take over after Kilborn left for CBS. The Daily Show has won multiple Emmy's and other prestigious awards such as the Peabody Award. It airs Mondays-Thursdays at 11pm ET on Comedy Central. It re-airs the following day at 1am ET, 10am ET, 2pm ET, and 8pm ET on Comedy Central.moreless

Good Morning America

ABC

For ABC, this was a much more successful morning news series than A.M. America, which had lasted the first ten months of 1975. ABC looked at one of its affiliates, WEWS in Cleveland, and admired the station's very successful news/talk series called The Morning Exchange (1972-1999). Network programming president Fred Silverman oversaw ABC's using The Morning Exchange as a model for their new program. Today the show is anchored by Robin Roberts and George Stephanopoulos. Sam Champion gives weather reports throughout the morning, Josh Elliott does the news, and Lara Spencer does the lifestyle reports. Dateline NBC, premiered for NBC News in primetime in 1992. Since then, this multi-night franchise has included frequent specials, investigative reporting and uses its news anchors as more than just news-readers. With Stone Phillips and Ann Curry anchoring, the broadcast also features Tom Brokaw, Katie Couric and Maria Shriver, each of whom contributes to and anchors some of the editions. The flexibility of 'Dateline NBC' allows for both multipart features and full hour documentaries devoted to single subjects and reports. Dateline has delivered in-depth coverage of breaking news, including the funeral of Princess Diana, the national manhunt for Andrew Cunanan, the crash of TWA Flight 800, the Unabomber investigation, the Oklahoma City bombing, the O.J. 48 Hours began January 19, 1988 with Dan Rather anchoring/hosting until 2002. Leslie Stahl, took over for Rather in the Fall of 2002 and continues with the program to present day. This news magazine program began as a half hour show, evolving into the one hour investigative report that it remains today. The name has changed from "48 Hours" to "48 Hours Investigates" and the current, "48 Hours Mystery". Having won numerous awards in broadcast, it also now features a stellar 'cast' of individual award winning reporters and has been known to not just report on stories, but make real differences.moreless

Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction

"Within this hour we will tell you five stories, some real, some fake, you decide. Your call." This weekly series first premiered in May 1997. Back then with host, James Brolin. When he left, Jonathan Frakes made a very interesting host. This series has been on and off, with 'burnoffs' that included 1997/1998, where they just brought it back for one day on Friday. This made people confused, because it didn't air the week after that. But again, FOX revived it was brought back for the Summer 2002. Creepy true stories like a boy vanishing in the closet, and false stories, like a dog coming back to life, and a bankrupt couple with the Gone with the Wind dresses in their closet.moreless

What Would You Do?

What Would You Do? is a reality hidden-camera show broadcast on ABC as part of the "Primetime" series. Hosted by John Quinones, the show sets up everday scenarios to gauge the reaction of or test the character of witnesses and passerby's, which are caught using hidden cameras. Some of the situations set up by the show include: a woman who says she has been drinking asking strangers to blow into a breathalyzer to help start her car, an out-of-control soccer coach verbally abusing a child, and a man trying to lure a visibly drunken woman out of a restaurant and back to his house. Many people ignore the situation and mind their own business. Others survey the situation and step in when they feel things have gone too far. World News Tonight is a nightly news program that airs on ABC.

History:

Harry Reasoner and Howard K. Smith had co-anchored the ABC Evening News from December 1970. In 1975, Reasoner assumed sole anchor responsibilities until his pairing with Barbara Walters, the first female network anchor, in Oct. 1976. Ratings for the nightly news broadcast declined shortly thereafter.

On July 10, 1978, Roone Arledge, head of ABC's news and sports divisions, launched World News Tonight with a trio of anchors. From Washington D.C., the late Frank Reynolds assumed primary anchor responsiblities, while Peter Jennings (from London) and the late Max Robinson (from Chicago) - the first African-American network news anchor - provided secondary duties.

From 1983 to 2005, the program as anchored by Peter Jennings. Following Jennings' death, the program was renamed on August 15, 2005, from World News Tonight with Peter Jennings to World News Tonight. Elizabeth Vargas and Bob Woodruff were named as co-anchors. Woodruff was severely wounded in January 2006 while reporting from Iraq. Vargas stepped down for maternity leave in May 2006 and Charles Gibson was named as permanent anchor.moreless
