NBC News Specials is an introspective news program that delves into pertinent topics in the current social landscape. Looking to uncover even more than they do nightly, hosts such as Stone Phillips and Brian Williams are on location to interview people and tell a new story in this touching, enlightening program. From sitting down with the gallant firemen that survived the brutal attacks of September 11th, to taking a look at the legendary tradition of High School football in a small Texas town, Phillips and Williams ask all the right questions and offer gripping commentary with each story. By no means an exclusive look at crisis or despair, NBC News Specials will get up close and personal with author J.K. Rowling as well as notable figures such as Tony Blair or George Bush, but will also take a touching trip to Africa with singer Bono to see the tragic way of life all too common in much of the world. All that matters is the story, and these relentless hosts will travel far and wide, from Darfur to Haiti, Texas to Iraq; if there is a tale left untold, it will come out on NBC News Specials.moreless

Planet Forward is a program produced and aired by PBS, an hour-long special which premiered in April of 2009. This television special focuses on informing viewers about new developments in the world of green energy, and is hosted by former CNN journalist Frank Sesno. The program is also supplemented by an online forum which allows users to discuss current topics concerning the program content. This innovative format allows programs to be generated by the interests of its viewers. The show's pilot featured James Connaughton, former environmental advisor to the president and Shai Agassi, founder of Better Place, a company which seeks to reduce the nation's dependency on petroleum. The discussion in this episode centered around the question, "Can we move rapidly away from fossil fuels in the near future?" Viewers were also told to engage in the conversation by submitting their own ideas to the program's website. Subsequent episodes have continued with this format by asking questions such as "How can we reduce our carbon footprint?" and "What is an innovation that improves how we generate or use energy?" The program is funded by groups such as the Tawani Foundation and Noblis.moreless
