This series presented by Food Network follows Alton Brown of Good Eats fame as he and his crew travel the open roads of America in search of great food. Season one started on the shores of South Carolina, and followed the crew on their way to Los Angeles, steering clear of interstates when possible, Alton visits culinary landmarks along the way, some known, and some unknown, all while enlightening us with history of cuisine and culture along the way. Set to return this fall, Alton and company will travel the length of the Mighty Mississippi for season 2.

I'm talking about the highways and byways that really stitch this crazy quilt of a country together. Why, on routes like this, anything can happen. Consider cuisine: interstates give you culinary conformity, but out here, flavors change with the contour of the land, and words like hospitality take on old meanings. Why, I bet down around that curve there is a cafe, diner, tea room, or truck stop where the waitresses still call ya hun, and the cooks actually cook! How do I know?
