  • Kimbo Slice vs. Seth Petruzelli

    8.5
CBS and EliteXC needed a big night here. They needed a blowaway card, they needed a fight that millions would watch and even more would talk about at the watercooler on Monday morning.

Unfortunately there was a problem. The proposed Kimbo Slice vs. Ken Shamrock fight, what would very well have been the most watched contest in American history, was cancelled when the latter was injured during a workout. UFC and The Ultimate Fighter veteran Seth Petruzelli was chosen as his replacement. Would the fans still tune in? Would the star face his first loss ever?

The show started with a hard-hitting contest between Benji Radach and Murilo Rua, brother of UFC superstar Mauricio Rua. Just like his brother, his most recent fight was a loss as Radach punched him countless times and eventually TKO'ed him in the 2nd frame. An upset of sorts, but if you've been listening to Bas Rutten you're looking at a potential threat to Anderson Silva (should the two ever been in the same organization).

Our next battle contained American Gladiators' Gina Carano taking on Kelly Kobald. After a war Carano won a unanimous decision and furthered her undefeated career.

Andrei Arlovski struggled early with Roy Nelson, but in the 2nd round murdered him with hard shots to win the fight.

Jake Shields also struggled but was able to retain his EliteXC Middleweight Championship.

In the main event megastar Kimbo Slice was absolutely destroyed by Seth Petruzelli. The announcers played it off as if it was the biggest upset ever, but it looks like hardcore MMA fans are right. Kimbo Slice is not a top talent.

Kimbo was not the only one to lose here tonight. It looks like EliteXC may have lost its one chance of survival. A good show, but how many more will there be?moreless

  • TRIVIA (7)

    • The Florida State Boxing Commission's 13 day investigation of potential foul play regarding the main event ended on October 23, 2008.

    • Due to EliteXC and its parent company ProElite folding this was the final broadcast of CBS EliteXC Saturday Night Fights.

    • The Florida State Athletic Commission will be conducting an investigation regarding the possibility of the outcome of Kimbo Slice vs. Seth Petruzelli fight being "fixed".

    • On ESPN's Pardon The Interruption Michael Wilbon claimed that the Kimbo Slice/Seth Petruzelli fight was fixed saying, "That was a more phantom punch than Ali had to knock out Liston in that fight in 1965."

    • Seth Petruzelli has stated that he was told by EliteXC executives to not "take Kimbo down". Kimbo Slice's weakness is his ground game, and obviously the company could get in a lot of trouble with the Florida State Athletic Commission if it turns out they fixed fights.

    • EliteXC President Jared Shaw could be seen getting angry after Kimbo Slice was defeated by Seth Petruzelli, realizing that this could take a heavy financial cost on the promotion.

    • This was Kimbo Slice's first ever professional loss. His record is now 3-1.

Mauro Ranallo: He came here tonight, found out he would be in the main event and he has shocked the world.

    • Gus Johnson: He came here tonight, found out he would be in the main event and he has shocked the world.

    • Mauro Ranallo: Andrei Arlovski dominates Nelson like CSI dominates the ratings. That's how you close the show.

    • (Discussing the cancellation of the main event)
Ken Shamrock: I hope they put this together again because he deserves a beating and I'm gonna give him one.
