    Eric Schaeffer grew up in New York's Upper West Side. He loves his neighborhood and primarily sets his films there. He attended Bard College as a Drama and Dance major, and afterward began driving a NYC cab for nine years. During that time, he wrote 20 feature screenplays (2 of which he had optioned); wrote and directed two plays off-off Broadway and wrote an unpublished novel ("Wirey Spindell"). He also wrote for "America's Most Wanted" and wrote two cartoons for television, but was rejected from the AFI film school. Undaunted, he decided to make his films by any means possible and enlisted the help of a friend, Donny Ward. Together they wrote, directed, produced and starred in "My Life's In Turnaround" with appearances by Phoebe Cates, Martha Plimpton, John Sayles and Casey Siemaszko. The movie was released in June 1994 and ultimately showed in 105 cities. Eric partnered with producer Terence Michael for "If Lucy Fell", written and directed by Schaeffer. Together they got Sarah Jessica Parker, Elle Macpherson and Ben Stiller to star in the film . Schaeffer also stars opposite Ms. Parker in the film, which was released in 1996. "Fall", for which writer, director and actor Schaeffer paired once again with producer Terence Michael, was financed through independent means. The movie was released in 1997 and also stars Amanda De Cadenet. Schaeffer wrote "Wirey Spindell" ten years prior to its release in 2000. The unpublished novel written by Shaeffer also has him in the starring role. In 1999 Schaeffer starred opposite Jill Clayburgh and Jeffrey Tambor in the NBC sitcom "Everythings Relative". While the series was in production, Schaeffer asked Clayburgh and Tambor if they would star in a film he would write specifically for them. The result is "Never Again," which opened in 2002. "Never Again" is the first film in which Schaeffer did not act in the film.moreless

He continued his pursuit of acting at the University of Michigan, where he double-majored in theatre and psychology and appeared in many summer stock and dinner theatre productions. Shortly after graduation Paymer attended an open casting call for the musical "Grease," and landed the role of "Sonny Latieri" in the national touring company and on Broadway. Not long after his Broadway stint, he was cast in his first feature film, "The In-Laws," directed by Arthur Hiller, which eventually brought him to Hollywood. His first job after moving to Los Angeles was playing an inept burglar on a memorable episode of "Barney Miller." Other TV shows followed, including guest starring roles on "Hill Street Blues," "Taxi," "Lou Grant," "Cheers," "Murphy Brown," "L.A. Law" and "Moonlighting." It wasn't long before he began appearing regularly in such notable films as "No Way Out," "Irreconcilable Differences," "Heart and Souls," "Crazy People" and "Searching For Bobby Fischer." He also co-starred in the highly successful "City Slickers" and "City Slickers 2: Curly's Gold." However, it was his role in "Mr. Saturday Night" that brought his best notices to date. His performance as Billy Crystal's put-upon brother in the film won him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor of 1992, as well as a Golden Globe nomination. Paymer's sly, subtle portrayal of the conniving producer in "Quiz Show," directed by Robert Redford, ultimately led to more edgy and textured characters in such movies as "Get Shorty," directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, "Nixon," directed by Oliver Stone, and "The American President," directed by Rob Reiner. He also starred in and received a Golden Globe Award nomination for HBO's dramatic film about the Lindberg baby kidnapping, "Crime of the Century" directed by Mark Rydell. Other notable films notable films include "Payback," "Mighty Joe Young," "Mumford," directed by Lawrence Kasdan, "The Hurricane," directed by Norman Jewison, "State and Main," directed by David Mamet, and "Amistad," directed by Steven Speilberg. Paymer is also venturing behind the camera. He directed the short film "Candor City Hospital" for Showtime, and will direct an upcoming episode of the series "Everwood" this season. Even in the nineties his career has continued, having been in such shows as "The Black Stallion", "The Heights", "Sliders", "Two", "The X-Files" (in two different roles on two seperate occasions), "The Outer Limits", "Millenium" (also having two seperate roles), "The Crow: Stairway to Heaven", and his own show, "Da Vinci's Inquest".
