In an unhappy "life imitates art" retracing of the plotline of this episode, highly regarded Shakespearean actor Robert Stephens suffered a precipitous career downturn related to his heavy drinking in wake of his divorce from Oscar-winning actress, Maggie Smith.
The writing for this episode covers a lot of the same ground as the episode that aired the week before- "Wave Goodbye To Our Fair-Haired Boy." Both episodes had protagonists who were published writers (one a novelist, the other, a poet) and who were struggling with alcoholism and creative droughts. Both were also old friends of Prof. Howe who were targeted for sharp criticism by other Channing faculty members. It would seem to be an unusual programming choice to play these similar episodes back-to-back.
