Episode Summary

EDIT
The Love Contract: A small bit that plays at the beginning episode - this sketch is a satire of the Kobe Bryant incident and how it could have been avoided with 'The Love Contract' as your partner signs it confirming consent.

Charlie Murphy's True Hollywood Stories (Rick James): This is the infamous "Charlie Murphy's True Hollywood Stories: Rick James" episode. Other than "The Love Contract" sketch, this entire episode focuses on Eddie Murphy's older brother Charlie and his run-ins with 80s musician Rick James. This was the most popular Chappelle's Show episode to date.

  • My favorite episode of the season!

I absolutely loved this episode. It was so hilarious, with Charlie Murphy retelling his crazy, Hollywood stories about Rick James. The first time I watched this episode I actually started crying because I was laughing so hard. Chappelle plays a great Rick James, and Rick James himself offers hilarious commentary. There are so many great quotes from this episode, including the classic "I'm Rick James B**ch". The skits are also timed perfectly. In my opinion, this one of the funniest episodes to ever grace television, from this show or any other. I would highly recommend watching this one because it just hilarious.moreless

Charlie Murphy's True Hollywood Stories Rick James

    so funny

    you got 2 watch it.

Charlie Murphy (who also wrote the sketch) retells events of the 1980s, the most popular being the Rick James story with Murphy as himself and Chappelle as James, including incidents such as James slapping Murphy and Murphy retaliating. The sketch is interspersed with present-day scenes of the real Rick James explaining his past behavior, saying, "Coca*ne's a hell of a drug" and babbling incoherently. The sketch spawned one of the show's popular catchphrases, "I'm Rick James, b*tch!", which Chappelle as James repeatedly declares. Being split into parts, it is the longest skit to be featured on the show.

    • Goof: When Charlie Murphy is punching "Rick James" on the couch, it's visible that Charlie hit his own hand with his fist.

  • QUOTES (31)

    • Dave as Rick James: ".....I'm one of the baddest motherf***as of all time! Hold my drink b***h!"

    • At one point during Charlie Murphy's True Hollywood Stories interview, Charlie says "S**t, I just gave him some help", but "s**t" isn't bleeped out.

    • Rick James: I wish I had more hands, so I could give those titties four thumbs down!

    • Rick James: Cocaine is a hell of a drug.

    • Charlie Murphy: I knew what hotel he was stayin' at. I told my boys I'd catch up with them later. So I shot over to the hotel, went up to his room...
(Cuts to Rick James sitting on a dresser talking to himself)
Rick James: So then... he comes in there and I says, "Listen, bitch, I'm Rick James."

    • Rick James: (to his bodyguards) Do with him whatever you like.

    • Dave as Rick James: Now, Darkness, the tables are turned.

    • Chappelle as Rick James: (While getting punched by Charlie Murphy) You evil motha F*** BLACK MAGIC DARKNESS....LOOK WHAT U DONE TO MY LEGS CHARLIE MURPHY!

    • Dave as Rick James: UNITY!

    • Chappelle as Rick James: I'm one of the baddest motherf*ckers of all time, one of the best singers and one of the best looking motherf*ckers you've ever seen. Hold my drink, bitch.

    • Charlie Murphy: Eddie and everybody else thought that that was the funniest shit. And that threw me in a weird space cause I'm like, "Yo, this is Rick James and he's a star. Maybe I'm overreacting." I actually went there like, "Maybe I shouldn't do nothing." But my ghetto side was going, "Yo, stomp this motherf*cker out right here. What the f*ck is wrong with him?"

    • Rick James: You know, I love Charlie Murphy, but we really had it out sometimes: slapping each other in the face, punching each other in the chest, kicking each other (slow motion shot of Chappelle as Rick James on Eddie Murphy's couch -- "Fuck yo couch n*gga, fuck yo couch!). Can you imagine two grown men doing this? Cocaine is a hell of a drug. I must be losin' my mind. Reminiscing about Charlie Murphy come kickin' MY ass. Ain't that a b.

    • Dave as Rick James: Bitch! Come over here and have sex with Charlie Murphy. I'm Rick James Bitch!

    • Charlie Murphy: Because of my complexion, he use to call me Darkness. He calls me and brother Darkness. The Darkness Brothers. See, this is long before Wesley Snipes. Back then... we was the blackest niggas on the planet according to Rick James.

    • (Rick addressing Charlie in the China Club)
Chappelle as Rick James: CHARLIE MURPHY! What's happening, partner! DARKNESS, EVERYONE, DARKNESS! HEY EVERYBODY, DARKNESS IS SPREADING!

    • Chappelle as Rick James:DRINK UP, BE MERRY! Welcome to the China Club - A-CHUNGA-CHUNG-KUNG-A-CHINGA-KUNG-KAW-CHING!

    • Rick James: That was 'cold-blooded'!

    • Real Rick James: "What was he gonna do? Smack me back? I'm Rick James - he's Charlie Murphy!"

    • Rick James: See, I never did things just to do them, come on, i mean, what am i gonna do, just, just all of a sudden just jump up and grind my feet on somebody's couch? Like it's-like it's y'know, somethin' to do? Come on, I got a little more sense than that. Yeah, I remember grinding my feet on Eddie's couch.

    • Charlie Murphy, talking about Rick James: He was mad niggerish.

    • Rick James to Eddie & Charlie Murphy: F*** Your couch, nigga! F*** Your couch. Buy another one, you rich motherf***er!

    • Charlie Murphy on Rick James: Things like escalated to the point where, you know, my man got too familiar and I ended up having to whip his ass man, you know, cause you know, he would step across the line. Habitually. He's a habitual line stepper.

    • Dave Chappelle as Rick James: They should have never given you niggas money!

    • Dave Chappelle as Rick James: Charlie, there's a new joke going around. Have you heard it? ... What did the five fingers say to the face?
      Charlie Murphy: What?
Dave Chappelle as Rick James: SLAP! (slaps Charlie Murphy) "Cold Blooded!" BANG BANG! I'm Rick James, bitch! Everybody, King Kong ain't got sh*t on me!
Charlie Murphy: I'm standing there thinking, this nigga has really lost his f*ckin mind!

    • Dave Chappelle as Rick James: I'm Rick James, bitch.

    • Charlie Murphy: I'm standing there I'm thinking, "This nigga really has lost his fucking mind." First of all, you don't slap a man. Ok. I mean, even when slapping was fashionable, ya know, they did it in Paris, some guy would come up, "I challenge you to a duel." They would have a gunfight after that, somebody had to go!

    • Real Rick James: Don't you think Charlie's a little old to be taking karate. He probably taking it with the little kids.
