All is bliss until Beth's former boyfriend, Mike (RICHARD BROSE), shows up and tells Charles he'd better leave Beth alone or else. When news of the threat gets around, Buddy (WILLIE AAMES) and the Powells advise Mike not to hurt Charles. Not wanting to back down from a bully, and yet aware that he and Beth are attracted to each other only because they are both on the rebound, Charles confronts Beth and Mike, explaining his view of the situation and encourages themto get back together. All is resolved. Charles will now get a chance to date that cute girl he met in aerobics class .moreless

Buddy(Willie Aames)announces that he won the contest to be the DJ at the diner, he gets nervous when he has to talk after playing records, he then faints, he tries to get Charles(Scott Baio)on the show but he refuses so he gets Sarah(Josie Davis), Jamie(Nicole Eggert)and Adam(Alexander Polinsky). Lillian passed the clean inspection but is worried when he comes back to check the wiring in the building, Jamie and Adam have to stay after school so Buddy has to start the show without them, when he goes on the air he's as cool as a cucumber, but as Jamie and Adam have used up their time, Sarah gets sick from eating way too many candy bars, when Leonard tells Lillian she has to pay 2,000 or he shuts down the diner. Charles decides to put what he said on the air, he then said to Lillian that she passed the inspection and quietly leaves.moreless

Taylor)about going easy on them, he refuses and tells Charles if they don't pass, he can start looking for a new career, so he decides to give them any test he wants, Victor(Ed Beechner) and Eugene(Peter Parros)think it's boring at first until Walter(James Callahan) and Lillian tells them everything that went on during the 50's and they go to the diner to look up information and they eventually pass the test with flying colors.moreless

Unfortunately, Gayle doesn't think his answer is spicy enough and she changes it considerably, making way for confusion and chaos as Charles and Buddy try desperately to keep the paper out of everyone's hands - when everyone wants to read it now! By the time Charles finds out that the letter-writer was the more mature Jamie (NICOLE EGGERT), he's already decided journalism and Gayle Landis are not for him.moreless

Charles tells Jamie that he invited "The Club" committee over, thinking that she got in she rushes upstairs to get ready, Charles has a plan that involves Sarah(Josie Davis), when they arrive Charles announces that Sarah is interested in joining, but when they start insulting her because of her income, hair, nails, clothes and persona, Jamie having heard enough tells Stacy to take her club and shove it.moreless

      As if things weren't difficult enough for Charles (Scott Baio) with the Powell family needing all the tender loving care he can muster, he's not ready for an extended visit from his pal Buddy (Willie Aames). In this episode Buddy comes for dinner, wrenches his ankles, and has to stay in Charles' room for a few days. With almost anyone else that would be a minor imposition, but with Buddy it's a major emergency. What really aggravates the situation is that Charles is about to have a date with Lauren Andrews (Maylo McCaslin in), a girl who could easily become that "‘someone special" in Charles" life. To make matters even worse Lauren can't stand Buddy. And there's Buddy, getting in the way, when Charles would rather be alone. But there's a catch - Lauren is starring in the school play with Buddy and she confides to Charles that she hopes Buddy stays sick forever so he will be replaced. This is tough for Charles, because after all Lauren is beautiful, but the play means the world to Buddy. And Buddy is Charles' best friend. It's another sticky problem for Charles to untangle, but he does it, and he always does what he thinks is right.moreless

When STEPHANIE (Cheryl Arutt) and JOYCE (Michelle Johnson) come over for a "pre-date," JOYCE suggests the boys get together with her brother DUANE (David Knell) who loves to help people out with physics but who is a little backward in the social department. A trade is worked out: DUANE will help them with physics if CHARLES and BUDDY help DUANE "loosen up." The fact that gorgeous JOYCE will be eternally grateful if the boys can pull her brother out of his shell ("I'd be your slave for life!") doesn't hurt their enthusiasm for the deal. The physics part proves to be easier than the social part, however, especially when DUANE thinks horning in on the two couples is part of his education. Things start to look up when DUANE calls from jail after being arrested for participating in a panty raid at a sorority house: not necessarily what his sister had in mind.moreless

      Walter (James Callahan) wants Jamie (Nicole Eggert), Sarah (Josie Davis) and Adam (Alexander Polinsky) to do stuff they did when they were little, tired and not wanting to hurt their grandfather's feelings they tell Charles (Scott Baio) to talk to Walter and tells him to enroll in a College class he refuses by saying "You Can't Teach an Old Dog New Tricks" and refuses, but he changes his mind and decides to participate and he learns that Charles will be his substitute teacher and when Walter keeps being the teachers pet and raises his hand when Charles gets the date wrong in the War, he later popular and having no time for his grandchildren, they kids demand that they want their grandfather back. Since Walter can't take Adam to the father/son banquet Charles takes him and breaks a date to do it, Charles's date offers to take Walter to a sorority party and Buddy (Willie Aames) decides to double date with him, Charles then tells them that they have to write a 10 page essay, after reading Walter's paper he's determined to give give him a "F" for not using the text book information, after looking at the text book himself Charles realizes that the book is wrong and invites Walter as a guest speaker to talk to the class what he saw through his eyes during the War.moreless

Charles asks Jamie to talk to Karen, she then starts to learn more from her than she did in high school, Buddy (Willie Aames) invites Charles to a party that he is throwing at a Hotel and it's an Arabian Nights themed party where Buddy and Charles are the Sultans and the girls are the Harem. When Charles and Jamie catch Todd and Karen in a lip lock, she decides to take Todd to the museum instead. Charles tells Jamie that if she wants Todd back she has to improve her mind by getting Sarah to help her, Buddy tells Charles that the party is suddenly moved to Charles's bedroom and with everyone out of the house there bound with no interruptions, but when everyone comes back early it puts Charles in a very tight spot. Todd says that Karen is more shallow person than Jamie is, Charles then says that she doesn't have to give up the fun things in life.moreless

In the end, honesty is the best policy. When Charles admits he and Carol like each other, Buddy is relieved, because he was trying to break up with Carol anyway. Sarah and Sean stop playing games and tell each other their true feelings, and Adam and Walter both reveal that they were only camping for the others' enjoyment and they would rather stay indoors.moreless

You see Buddy has some ulterior motives in trying to fill Charles' shoes. He's out to impress a current girlfriend, Debbie (Susan Ursitti), with his child—rearing abilities. It results in cataclysmic confrontations between Buddy and the three Powell youngsters, in fact it gets so bad that Adam (Alexander Polinsky) runs away. But in the end, things go well, Charles returns and the three Powell children, especially Adam, find out Buddy is a pretty terrific guy after all on "Charles In Charge."moreless

      Sid's Pizza Parlor, that wondrous emporium that provides Charles (Scott Baio) a nourishing home away from home, in "Charles in Charge," is under attack. It seems the college owns the land the hang—out stands on, and they are reclaiming it for a parking lot. This means Charles' favorite meeting place for dates and other occasions is about to be banished, forever. Charles turns to his adoptive family, the Powells, for assistance. Jamie (Nicole Eggert) is studying amateur psychiatry and Sarah (Josie Davis) is studying amateur journalism for a school project, so they feel there is deeper meaning, and a lot of unrevealed facts to this whole dilemma. Buddy (Willie Aames) thinks it's a plot, but he's not sure whose. Walter Powell (James Callahan) thinks they all ought to improve their diet by eating on board ship. . . any ship. So in true motherly fashion, Ellen Powell gets out the placards and begins writing protest legends on them. Charles being Charles, however, confronts the head of the board, Mr. Bartlett, played in snarling brilliance by James Karen, at the pizza parlor. In true Charles fashion, the truth comes out, and Charles saves the day and saves Sid's. The laughs always have a bite in them when it's "Charles In Charge."moreless

Together, Buddy and Charles strategically schedule the events of the evening, arranging just enough time for everything. As the plan takes form, all seems under control, but shortly the chaos begins. Charles' speech is postponed; Jamie's party starts early, and Julie becomes impatient and curious about why she has to wait with Buddy. The hilarious antics that occur confuse everyone, but Charles finally solves the problems by sending Sarah's class, Jamie's party and Buddy to the pizza parlor, while he and Julie stay home.moreless

She is very direct about what she wants and she wants CHARLES. Unfortunately, WALTER (James Callahan) finds them together in the living room in the middle of the night and comes down hard on CHARLES. It makes it difficult when MRS. ROBINSON won't take "no" for an answer and puts CHARLES' job in jeopardy. While CHARLES is trying to work out the limits of an "off-limits" relationship, BUDDY (Willie Aames) achieves hero status when he saves PAULA THACKERY (Julianne McNamara) from a crazed watergunner. Along with hero status, however, comes hero worship, which he isn't ready for from the young high schooler. So while CHARLES has a problem with an older woman, BUDDY has trouble with a younger one. BUDDY is more than willing to trade.moreless

Concerned that Sarah will fall prey to this fast-talking boy, Charles and Buddy disrupt the movie theater where Gary (SCOTT GRIMES) and Sarah are on their date, with their hilariously clumsy spying attempts. When a peeved Sarah assures Charles that her date is a gentleman, Charles has a heart-to-heart with him about the value of friends and the importance of "being yourself." Much to Charles' relief, Gary becomes likeable, Adam comes out of his hiding place and Jamie fixes her hair.moreless

Charles arrives and takes her back to the house but Jamie(Nicole Eggert)and Sarah(Josie Davis)all have plans and can't watch her, Charles gets ready for the prom, while he is changing Hillary takes off, they eventually find her and Adam tells Hillary's mother the truth and takes responsibility.moreless

Jamie has selected waitressing at Sid's Pizza Parlor as her initiation into the working world and Charles has to play big-brother chaperone even while trying to make time with a new girlfriend in his favorite hangout. As if that weren't enough, Lillian (ELLEN TRAVOLTA), Charles' mom, is still in town, and doesn't seem anxious to go home. With that kind of pressure Charles has to wonder who's really running things, especially when he's hit by a whopping surprise that leaves him (and us) wondering how it will change his life...and what he'll do about it.moreless

The children are doing every thing with her in stead of Charles. Buddy thinks she is trying to take Charles' place. So Charles hides the string of Pearls in a trophy in his downstairs room. He told Mr. Powell that when the baby-sitter was there. So when he went down it wasn't their. Jamie is at the top of the steps and in the living room she sees the baby-sitter putting the necklace under the sofa. The next day when day when Grandfather Powell wants the necklace, Charles tries to make up excuses and the old baby-sitter is looking under the sofa and it is not there. Sara, Jamie, and Adam come down with it wrapped. The reason the Old babysitter did that was because she wanted her job back.moreless

Lillian (Ellen Travolta) offers her diner for the protest so Charles can later take Sarah, Jamie (Nicole Eggert) and Adam (Alexander Polinsky) to see the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Buddy (Willie Aames) joins Charles in the cage to get publicity, but when everyone leaves the diner Charles and Buddy don't have a key to open the lock, so they are stuck until someone finds them and that he's gonna let the kids down and they'll never trust him again. Stanley Willard shows up and they plead for him to help them, he then has the cage transferred to the College, and the next morning they are released by Prof. Willard and end up on the front page of the newspaper and Stanley stated that there will be no more experimenting on animals, Sarah thanks Charles, it also turns out that the tickets for the movie is for Saturday night not Friday night so all is well with the kids seeing the movie after all.moreless

He also realizes that the souvenirs weren't that important to him, he just kept them to make his 35 years in the navy feel more important . While Walter plays down the significance of the souvenirs, Charles discovers a medal Walter received for saving the lives of three shipmates. After all, this is Halloween -- Douglas explains -- it is a special night. You can knock on peoples' door, and even though they don't know you, they smile at you and give you candy. Professor Haskins (Bryan Clark) tells Charles that the test that he will take is rather easy, but it takes an emotional commitment to be a part of Princeton, he then leaves and goes back to direct the show. Sarah is touched that he gave up the interview for the show and Charles said that there will be other interviews and the show starts and it goes off without a hitch and Charles runs into Professor Haskins and he sees an emotional commitment he made with the show and graciously accepts him to Princeton and that it was Jamie who called him and they say their goodbyes on the stage.moreless

Easier said than done - Jason is in a school play and has a problem with laughing when he comes to a certain line. Lila needs lessons in throwing a good softball - that is, not throwing like a girl. Douglas is invited to a party and just has to know how to dance. He doesn't want to look like a jerk. When Charles and Michelle finally sit down to dinner in the kitchen, the children come in and interrupt them. Charles apologizes to Michelle and tells her that it was not planned that way, but she explains that she loves it. She comes from a large family, and she is really having a wonderful time. When Jill and Stan come home, Jill announces that she has made a decision - she wanted the promotion alright but not at the expense of missing out on spending precious time with her family. Charles can honestly recommend her to the Wilson's for the live-in helper's job. After he offers Megan his congratulations, he tells Buddy that Megan will be the only graduate from Charles ‘R' Us school. No amount of money could pay them for the ‘torture test' they had to pass. But when Sarah goes away on a nature field trip she leaves Adam (ALEXANDER POLINSKY) in charge of Ross. Upon her return, Ross is gone! Sarah assumes the worst, and accuses Adam of turtlecide. Well Adam swears he is innocent and that Ross was alive and well a few hours ago, but no one will believe him. Adam knows he is innocent until proven guilty, and requests a trial with Charles (SCOTT BAIO) as his attorney. The only problem is Charles is supposed to be leaving with Buddy (WILLIE AAMES) for Ft. Lauderdale. The ever-loyal Charles,unable to disappoint anyone, decides to postpone his departure and help the hapless Adam. Charles knows it's his mom who's guilty, but since she was standing in for him, he takes the blame. Needless to say, there are some hard feelings between Charles and his mom, Lillian, Lillian and Walter, and Walter and Charles, but in the end everything gets worked out, and Charles, (or is it his mom,) is back in charge.moreless

He gets into more trouble than it is worth and he decides the bringing up his grades instead might be easier. LILLIAN greets CHARLES one morning with the news that her new friend has gone home to Chicago. Suddenly CHARLES feels better. Life with mother is just beginning, though. His campaign to capture Ellen Powell's affection is first subtlety slowed by the three kids and then abruptly terminated by Ellen's own left hook. Should he step in and stop all the "fun" or should he not get involved at all? His friend Buddy had told him that blood is thicker than water, and Elliot is family. In the end, Charles does put his foot down, and to his amazement finds out that Mr. and Mrs. Pembroke were just letting him go through this experience by himself, since they knew all along how things were going to end, and that you cannot simply say ‘yes' to everything and then not be present to accept the consequences.moreless

They blame each other for ‘killing' the dog. All the while, the dog is very much alive, and both boys want Charles' permission to keep it. Charles agrees that they may-- just long enough until the rightful owner has been found. In the meantime, Jill and Stan have to go to a wedding, Charles has to make decisions on how to sort dirty laundry, and what to do with the two Bruce Springsteen tickets he just won by phoning alocal radio station. Buddy and Gwendolyn are making it very difficult for Charles to decide who is to go with him to the rock concert. Finally, Charles convinces the two boys that they cannot keep something that may be very dear to someone else -- they return the dog to the owner and get a $20 reward. And Lila gets to go to the Bruce Springsteen concert with Charles.moreless

Jill feels that she cannot just walk out of the house and leave the children without at least talking about their individual problems, but Stan maintains that he has confidence in Charles --Charles has his trust and he will resolve the problems, whatever they are! That is why Charles and Douglas have to go to Doug's school and Charles has to face the boy's teacher. A stunned Charles meets an absolutely gorgeous and fashionably dressed young woman —- Ms. Susan McCoy. It turns out that she is also very knowledgeable. And during their meeting the other Pembroke children drop in, they are able to benefit from the valuable lesson the teacher is giving them. Ms. McCoy tells them that teachers are mostly trying to teach students discipline —- and how it helps them later in life! They all realize at the end of their meeting that it was a rewarding afternoon.moreless

If that's not bad enough, add a sudden thunderstorm so the Powells are rained out of their concert, and now we have, you guessed it - a large and unhappy crowd in the Powell home. But never fear, Charles will handle it. Jill rushes out of the house to review a new Chinese restaurant but comes back soon, and then resumes the argument with her husband. In the meantime, Douglas made Jason disappear through what he calls a scientific experiment. Then Charles has to explain to Douglas that you can argue with someone --or disagree -- and still love each other. And that is exactly what is happening with his parents. There is no end to all the commotion, and Charles knows he is in trouble until the Pembrokes decide to go out to dinner and give Charles time to finish his school paper in peace.moreless

A Foreign exchange student from Romania named Nikki (Ivan Geuron) comes to stay with the family. Sarah is trying to adjust seeing how her relatives by comparing their lifestyles, and with the family always busy all the time and no time for each other, Amanda announces that they are going to have a family dinner so that she can talk to her parents more, but her plan backfires when her parents can't stay for dinner, Michael and Amanda blame Nikki, Sarah then calls Charles for advice, he then tells Sarah that Nikki should explain to her that the children need their parents. Around the dinner table they each explain their problems one at a time, but Amanda explains that she wants to date a Mexican boy, being afraid that she'll get disowned, Steve tells Amanda that it's her decision to make.       Charles (Scott Baio) has to go down to Maui to look after a Hotel for Professor Higler, he can't because he has to look after the kids, he then asks Buddy (Willie Aames) to go instead but he and his fiance Nurse Bennett are going to explore caves and each other, Buddy comes back and Charles has already gone, so he calls his cousin Dudley (also played by Willie Aames) but when Charles arrives he sees someone that resembles his best friend Buddy, he then realizes he came all the way for nothing, Dudley asks him to stay in the room where he's staying "The Boat House". Dudley and Mitch try to stop a jumper from jumping and he'll jump unless his girlfriend agrees to marry him, the there's someone climbing the Hotel calling himself "The Human Fly", Dudley has a plan and calls the local television station, but with he and Mitch's job at risk and with the owner of the Hotel on his way. Mr. Higler (Dick Gautier) receives a phone call from the owner saying he sees the person climbing the Hotel and loves that it's a tribute to him and Dudley and Mitch's jobs are saved. Charles returns home and tells the Powell's about his trip and gets a telegram from Buddy who delivered it personally and is waiting in the kitchen, it says that he gave Dudley the job, so he goes and shows his appreciation literally.moreless

Charles receives a phone call from his mother saying that she forgot to drop off Aunt Sally's (Ellen Travolta) birthday present, so Charles has to give it to her in person and be back at the house no later than 6:00, when he realizes that his Aunt Sally's Car Wash is in deep financial trouble, and that she has no choice but to fire Bobby (Rodney Eastman), Spider (Jeff Davis), Tyrone (Billy "Sly" Williams) and Arthur (Jack Bannon). Charles has to get home and his cars exhaust needs to be fixed. Sally asks Arthur to check the books to see what she needs to repair her income. Spider, Tyrone and Bobby had a meeting and they say that they will work for Sally even though she won't be able to pay them and that they don't want to break up the family and that they'll give her their tips to pay rent. Arthur comes back and says that her husband Vincent has been keeping separate books for himself and the Car Wash and keeping money from Sally so she gets to keep the business after all. Charles arrives five minutes late and learns that Buddy (Willie Aames) taught the kids how to play "Strip Poker".moreless

When Stan Pembroke finds out who the quest of honor is, he becomes quite upset, but decides to go along with it to make his wife happy. And, just as Stan predicted, Ziegler turns out to be an unpleasant, opinionated and condescending person, who ends up on the door step when Stan and Charles have taken as much as they think they can.
