      After Charles (SCOTT BAIO) is devastated at being dumped by his girlfriend, Buddy (WILLIE AAMES) fixes him up with Beth (BRENDA SWANSON), a female bodybuilder at his health club. All is bliss until Beth's former boyfriend, Mike (RICHARD BROSE), shows up and tells Charles he'd better leave Beth alone or else. When news of the threat gets around, Buddy (WILLIE AAMES) and the Powells advise Mike not to hurt Charles. Not wanting to back down from a bully, and yet aware that he and Beth are attracted to each other only because they are both on the rebound, Charles confronts Beth and Mike, explaining his view of the situation and encourages themto get back together. All is resolved. Charles will now get a chance to date that cute girl he met in aerobics class .moreless
    • Buddy Flips a Disc
      Season 5 - Episode 12
      Lillian(Ellen Travolta)is having a "Be A Disc Jockey for a Day" at her diner, but she's even more nervous when the Health Inpsector Leonard Griffing(Frank DeVol)comes to evaluate the diner. Buddy(Willie Aames)announces that he won the contest to be the DJ at the diner, he gets nervous when he has to talk after playing records, he then faints, he tries to get Charles(Scott Baio)on the show but he refuses so he gets Sarah(Josie Davis), Jamie(Nicole Eggert)and Adam(Alexander Polinsky). Lillian passed the clean inspection but is worried when he comes back to check the wiring in the building, Jamie and Adam have to stay after school so Buddy has to start the show without them, when he goes on the air he's as cool as a cucumber, but as Jamie and Adam have used up their time, Sarah gets sick from eating way too many candy bars, when Leonard tells Lillian she has to pay 2,000 or he shuts down the diner. Charles decides to put what he said on the air, he then said to Lillian that she passed the inspection and quietly leaves.moreless

      Lillian(Ellen Travolta)she has put a down payment on a restaurant and plans to turn it into a diner from the 1950's calling it the "Yesterday Cafe". Charles(Scott Baio)has to teach a couple of students about "American History", but if they fail they get thrown off the football team, so Charles approaches Professor Krick(Mark L. Taylor)about going easy on them, he refuses and tells Charles if they don't pass, he can start looking for a new career, so he decides to give them any test he wants, Victor(Ed Beechner) and Eugene(Peter Parros)think it's boring at first until Walter(James Callahan) and Lillian tells them everything that went on during the 50's and they go to the diner to look up information and they eventually pass the test with flying colors.moreless

      When Charles (SCOTT BAIO) asks editor Gayle Landis (SUSAN BURRELL) for a job on her newspaper, acting as a fill—in for "‘Dear Amy" is not what he had in mind. But Gayle's persistence (and good -looks) wins him over and Charles agrees to give it a try. The hard part comes when Buddy (WILLIE AAMES) reads a letter to Charles from a reader who sounds suspiciously like Sarah— and she's having man problems! Charles can't tell Sarah how he read her letter so he gives his advice in his column. Unfortunately, Gayle doesn't think his answer is spicy enough and she changes it considerably, making way for confusion and chaos as Charles and Buddy try desperately to keep the paper out of everyone's hands - when everyone wants to read it now! By the time Charles finds out that the letter-writer was the more mature Jamie (NICOLE EGGERT), he's already decided journalism and Gayle Landis are not for him.moreless
    • Buddy Comes to Dinner
      Season 2 - Episode 7
      As if things weren't difficult enough for Charles (Scott Baio) with the Powell family needing all the tender loving care he can muster, he's not ready for an extended visit from his pal Buddy (Willie Aames). In this episode Buddy comes for dinner, wrenches his ankles, and has to stay in Charles' room for a few days. With almost anyone else that would be a minor imposition, but with Buddy it's a major emergency. What really aggravates the situation is that Charles is about to have a date with Lauren Andrews (Maylo McCaslin in), a girl who could easily become that "‘someone special" in Charles" life. To make matters even worse Lauren can't stand Buddy. And there's Buddy, getting in the way, when Charles would rather be alone. But there's a catch - Lauren is starring in the school play with Buddy and she confides to Charles that she hopes Buddy stays sick forever so he will be replaced. This is tough for Charles, because after all Lauren is beautiful, but the play means the world to Buddy. And Buddy is Charles' best friend. It's another sticky problem for Charles to untangle, but he does it, and he always does what he thinks is right.moreless

      Season 2 - Episode 24
      There are two very lovely ladies CHARLES (Scott Baio) and BUDDY (Willie Aames) would like to date if they can find the time between studying for their physics final and taking care of the Powell household. When STEPHANIE (Cheryl Arutt) and JOYCE (Michelle Johnson) come over for a "pre-date," JOYCE suggests the boys get together with her brother DUANE (David Knell) who loves to help people out with physics but who is a little backward in the social department. A trade is worked out: DUANE will help them with physics if CHARLES and BUDDY help DUANE "loosen up." The fact that gorgeous JOYCE will be eternally grateful if the boys can pull her brother out of his shell ("I'd be your slave for life!") doesn't hurt their enthusiasm for the deal. The physics part proves to be easier than the social part, however, especially when DUANE thinks horning in on the two couples is part of his education. Things start to look up when DUANE calls from jail after being arrested for participating in a panty raid at a sorority house: not necessarily what his sister had in mind.moreless

      Jamie(Nicole Eggert)needs a float for a parade, so Adam(Alexander Polinsky)builds a six-foot paper mache Dinosaur in the middle of the living room, Walter(James Callahan)protests and wants the thing Charles(Scott Baio)to get rid of it, Charles and Buddy(Willie Aames)get invited to a Poetry Seminar, needing a poem to get in he borrows one of Sarah's(Josie Davis)after he reads it to everyone, Luanne(Judie Aronson)publishes it in her magazine much to Sarah's chagrin, when she learns that her poem was published in Charles's name, she gets mad at Charles, her teacher thinks she copied it from the magazine, she flunked and got suspended from school, so it's up to Charles to fix things, so he decides to tell Sarah's teacher Mr. Worley(Graham Jarvis)and asks him to come over and everything will be straightened out, he tells Luanne the truth and offers Sarah to print her poetry in her magazine, and still goes out with Charles because she chose him not because he can write poetry.moreless

      Walter (James Callahan) wants Jamie (Nicole Eggert), Sarah (Josie Davis) and Adam (Alexander Polinsky) to do stuff they did when they were little, tired and not wanting to hurt their grandfather's feelings they tell Charles (Scott Baio) to talk to Walter and tells him to enroll in a College class he refuses by saying "You Can't Teach an Old Dog New Tricks" and refuses, but he changes his mind and decides to participate and he learns that Charles will be his substitute teacher and when Walter keeps being the teachers pet and raises his hand when Charles gets the date wrong in the War, he later popular and having no time for his grandchildren, they kids demand that they want their grandfather back. Since Walter can't take Adam to the father/son banquet Charles takes him and breaks a date to do it, Charles's date offers to take Walter to a sorority party and Buddy (Willie Aames) decides to double date with him, Charles then tells them that they have to write a 10 page essay, after reading Walter's paper he's determined to give give him a "F" for not using the text book information, after looking at the text book himself Charles realizes that the book is wrong and invites Walter as a guest speaker to talk to the class what he saw through his eyes during the War.moreless

      Charles and Gwendolyn had a fight over something rather trivial, and suddenly he feels he doesn't want to deal with the whole WOMEN issue. He's had it with women! He is trapped in the house full of women, and although Buddy drops in and has agreed to stay with him, they are outnumbered.       Adam (Alexander Polinsky) is determined to change his name because they expect more from him because he's Sarah's (Josie Davis) little brother Walter (James Callahan) tries to tell him that Powell is a good name, Sarah compliments Charles (Scott Baio) for dating an intelligent girl named Karen West (Brooke Mills), Jamie (Nicole Eggert) is dating Todd Gordon (Douglas Bryant Johnson) in order to be more popular but after he breaks up with her because he told Jamie that she was shallow. Charles asks Jamie to talk to Karen, she then starts to learn more from her than she did in high school, Buddy (Willie Aames) invites Charles to a party that he is throwing at a Hotel and it's an Arabian Nights themed party where Buddy and Charles are the Sultans and the girls are the Harem. When Charles and Jamie catch Todd and Karen in a lip lock, she decides to take Todd to the museum instead. Charles tells Jamie that if she wants Todd back she has to improve her mind by getting Sarah to help her, Buddy tells Charles that the party is suddenly moved to Charles's bedroom and with everyone out of the house there bound with no interruptions, but when everyone comes back early it puts Charles in a very tight spot. Todd says that Karen is more shallow person than Jamie is, Charles then says that she doesn't have to give up the fun things in life.moreless

While Adam is too young for love, Walter (JAMES CALLAHAN) decides it is time Adam (ALEXANDER POLINSKY) learn about the outdoors, so they plan on camping in the back yard. In the end, honesty is the best policy. When Charles admits he and Carol like each other, Buddy is relieved, because he was trying to break up with Carol anyway. Sarah and Sean stop playing games and tell each other their true feelings, and Adam and Walter both reveal that they were only camping for the others' enjoyment and they would rather stay indoors.moreless

      Jamie(Nicole Eggert) is so psyched about being in "The Club" for cool girls, so when Jamie and Charles(Scott Baio) make a bet to see if Buddy(Willie Aames)and Stacy(Holly Fields)have any good traits, so if any of them do not have any Charles will stop seeing Buddy and Jamie will stop hanging around Stacy, but when Stacy becomes romantically in love with Charles because he went everywhere she went, Stacy tells Jamie that the odds of getting in "The Club" are slim to none and she is in love with Charles will be good for her image, Jamie tells Charles to call it of with Stacy or she is never talking to him again, he agrees and tells her it is over and she tells him that Jamie will never be in the group. Charles tells Jamie that he invited "The Club" committee over, thinking that she got in she rushes upstairs to get ready, Charles has a plan that involves Sarah(Josie Davis), when they arrive Charles announces that Sarah is interested in joining, but when they start insulting her because of her income, hair, nails, clothes and persona, Jamie having heard enough tells Stacy to take her club and shove it.moreless

Charles arrives and takes her back to the house but Jamie(Nicole Eggert)and Sarah(Josie Davis)all have plans and can't watch her, Charles gets ready for the prom, while he is changing Hillary takes off, they eventually find her and Adam tells Hillary's mother the truth and takes responsibility.moreless

      Charles (Scott Baio) has to visit in town when his folks arrive for the weekend, so Buddy (Willie Aames) is placed in charge of the Powell kids. Charles convinces Ellen Powell (Sandra Kerns) that it's okay but Grandpa Powell (James Callahan) has some serious misgivings, and maybe rightly so. You see Buddy has some ulterior motives in trying to fill Charles' shoes. He's out to impress a current girlfriend, Debbie (Susan Ursitti), with his child—rearing abilities. It results in cataclysmic confrontations between Buddy and the three Powell youngsters, in fact it gets so bad that Adam (Alexander Polinsky) runs away. But in the end, things go well, Charles returns and the three Powell children, especially Adam, find out Buddy is a pretty terrific guy after all on "Charles In Charge."moreless

      Season 2 - Episode 9
      Sid's Pizza Parlor, that wondrous emporium that provides Charles (Scott Baio) a nourishing home away from home, in "Charles in Charge," is under attack. It seems the college owns the land the hang—out stands on, and they are reclaiming it for a parking lot. This means Charles' favorite meeting place for dates and other occasions is about to be banished, forever. Charles turns to his adoptive family, the Powells, for assistance. Jamie (Nicole Eggert) is studying amateur psychiatry and Sarah (Josie Davis) is studying amateur journalism for a school project, so they feel there is deeper meaning, and a lot of unrevealed facts to this whole dilemma. Buddy (Willie Aames) thinks it's a plot, but he's not sure whose. Walter Powell (James Callahan) thinks they all ought to improve their diet by eating on board ship. . . any ship. So in true motherly fashion, Ellen Powell gets out the placards and begins writing protest legends on them. Charles being Charles, however, confronts the head of the board, Mr. Bartlett, played in snarling brilliance by James Karen, at the pizza parlor. In true Charles fashion, the truth comes out, and Charles saves the day and saves Sid's. The laughs always have a bite in them when it's "Charles In Charge."moreless

      Charles (SCOTT BAIO) becomes frantic when he makes too many commitments for one evening. Having promised to speak to Sarah's (JOSIE DAVIS) class, chaperone Jamie's (NICOLE EGGERT) birthday party and go out with Julie Fletcher (COURTNEY GEBHART) , Charles seeks Buddy's (WILLIE AAMES) help in order to successfully proceed with all three activities. Together, Buddy and Charles strategically schedule the events of the evening, arranging just enough time for everything. As the plan takes form, all seems under control, but shortly the chaos begins. Charles' speech is postponed; Jamie's party starts early, and Julie becomes impatient and curious about why she has to wait with Buddy. The hilarious antics that occur confuse everyone, but Charles finally solves the problems by sending Sarah's class, Jamie's party and Buddy to the pizza parlor, while he and Julie stay home.moreless

She is very direct about what she wants and she wants CHARLES. Unfortunately, WALTER (James Callahan) finds them together in the living room in the middle of the night and comes down hard on CHARLES. It makes it difficult when MRS. ROBINSON won't take "no" for an answer and puts CHARLES' job in jeopardy. While CHARLES is trying to work out the limits of an "off-limits" relationship, BUDDY (Willie Aames) achieves hero status when he saves PAULA THACKERY (Julianne McNamara) from a crazed watergunner. Along with hero status, however, comes hero worship, which he isn't ready for from the young high schooler. So while CHARLES has a problem with an older woman, BUDDY has trouble with a younger one. BUDDY is more than willing to trade.moreless

      Charles (SCOTT BAIO) convinces Ellen (SANDRA KERNS) to allow Adam (ALEXANDER POLINSKY) to stay up and watch television all night, let Jamie (NICOLE EGGERT) streak her hair and allow Sarah (JOSIE DAVIS) to go on her first unchaperoned date. After one scary movie Adam ends up hiding in the closet, Jamie's hair turns out orange, blue and wild, and Sarah chooses to go out with the same shady character who sold Charles and Buddy (WILLIE AAMES) overpriced tickets to an important playoff game. Concerned that Sarah will fall prey to this fast-talking boy, Charles and Buddy disrupt the movie theater where Gary (SCOTT GRIMES) and Sarah are on their date, with their hilariously clumsy spying attempts. When a peeved Sarah assures Charles that her date is a gentleman, Charles has a heart-to-heart with him about the value of friends and the importance of "being yourself." Much to Charles' relief, Gary becomes likeable, Adam comes out of his hiding place and Jamie fixes her hair.moreless

Meanwhile, Charles gets a new credit card in the mail, but it only has a $500.00 limit, Jamie(Nicole Eggert)needs a new skirt, Charles lets her use the card only if she pays him back, she agrees, Sarah(Josie Davis)needs stuff for school stuff, so she uses Charles credit card, when Adam(Alexander Polinsky)learns of this he orders a BMX bike with his card, Charles is out on a date with Daphne at a restaurant, but when it came time to pay the check, his credit card was rejected, and when the kids feel terrible, so they decide to make it up to him by planning a dinner for him and Daphne with disastrous results.moreless

      Ever have one of those days when you can't win for losing? Well Charles (SCOTT BAIO) is having one of those days and it's turning into a week. First he suggests that Jamie (NICOLE EGGERT) be allowed to get a job so she can support her taste in expensive clothes, but Mrs. Powell (SANDRA KERNS) isn't very happy with her choice, and neither is Charles. Jamie has selected waitressing at Sid's Pizza Parlor as her initiation into the working world and Charles has to play big-brother chaperone even while trying to make time with a new girlfriend in his favorite hangout. As if that weren't enough, Lillian (ELLEN TRAVOLTA), Charles' mom, is still in town, and doesn't seem anxious to go home. With that kind of pressure Charles has to wonder who's really running things, especially when he's hit by a whopping surprise that leaves him (and us) wondering how it will change his life...and what he'll do about it.moreless

Jamie(Nicole Eggert), Sarah(Josie Davis) and Adam(Alexander Polinsky)think they'll never get the money for Walter's(James Callahan)present, Charles gives them the money and tells Buddy that you can't trust what you think the future might hold.moreless

      It all began when the Girl's father sends a string of pearls for Ellen Powell for their anniversary. The Powell's old babysitter shows up a very attractive blonde. The children are doing every thing with her in stead of Charles. Buddy thinks she is trying to take Charles' place. So Charles hides the string of Pearls in a trophy in his downstairs room. He told Mr. Powell that when the baby-sitter was there. So when he went down it wasn't their. Jamie is at the top of the steps and in the living room she sees the baby-sitter putting the necklace under the sofa. The next day when day when Grandfather Powell wants the necklace, Charles tries to make up excuses and the old baby-sitter is looking under the sofa and it is not there. Sara, Jamie, and Adam come down with it wrapped. The reason the Old babysitter did that was because she wanted her job back.moreless

When the review comes out, Charles is relieved to learn the critic not only loved the pizza but also enjoyed the Marx brothers—style floor show. Lillian (Ellen Travolta) offers her diner for the protest so Charles can later take Sarah, Jamie (Nicole Eggert) and Adam (Alexander Polinsky) to see the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Buddy (Willie Aames) joins Charles in the cage to get publicity, but when everyone leaves the diner Charles and Buddy don't have a key to open the lock, so they are stuck until someone finds them and that he's gonna let the kids down and they'll never trust him again. Stanley Willard shows up and they plead for him to help them, he then has the cage transferred to the College, and the next morning they are released by Prof. Willard and end up on the front page of the newspaper and Stanley stated that there will be no more experimenting on animals, Sarah thanks Charles, it also turns out that the tickets for the movie is for Saturday night not Friday night so all is well with the kids seeing the movie after all.moreless

Charles and Buddy decline the interview and send the reporter away. It is only when Jamie (NICOLE EGGERT) sees the same criminal on the 6 o'clock news arrested for another robbery, that everyone breathes easier. When Jamie is offered the chance to finish high school at the Professional Performers School' in New York City, Walter agrees to give his permission if she finds a mature, adult female to live with her. Soon after, Charles' Aunt Vanessa from New York City arrives for a visit. Vanessa and Jamie discover they enjoy each others company, so Jamie asks Vanessa to be her guardian in order to finish high school in New York. Aunt Vanessa immediately volunteers . Walter, being a man of honor, has to agree to let Jamie go, but gives Charles the task of changing Jamie's mind since his aunt made it possible. While Jamie is busy packing for her move to New York, Charles tries in vain to persuade his aunt to reneg on her promise to take Jamie to New York. When that fails he parades her friends in front of her, telling her how much she'll miss them, her new boyfriend, being head cheerleader, and attending all the parties and dances. He also realizes that the souvenirs weren't that important to him, he just kept them to make his 35 years in the navy feel more important . While Walter plays down the significance of the souvenirs, Charles discovers a medal Walter received for saving the lives of three shipmates. At that moment Buddy comes by and tries to explain what is going on. From then on things get a little confusing. At the end though, the evening might still turn out alright for Charles and Buddy. After all, this is Halloween -- Douglas explains -- it is a special night. You can knock on peoples' door, and even though they don't know you, they smile at you and give you candy. And all you have to do is wear a mask. Charles and Buddy look at each other and instantly decide to go out into the night -— Halloween night! Buddy announces that he is doing research for his paper at a Mental Hospital but after the interview with Dr. Clay (Jack Bannon), thinking that Buddy is unstable they keep for observation, it's up to Charles to get his friend out of this jam, Walter (James Callahan) says that they have a right to hold someone for observation, Charles learns that Buddy is to have a psychiatric evaluation by Dr. Stanley Willard (Ben Stein), but when Buddy checks out okay, he asks Charles to stay for observation, Buddy goes back with a ladder and tries to rescue his friend, it turns out that Stanley Willard is a patient there thinking that President Richard Nixon has appointed to Secretary of State, Charles goes home and learns that Buddy has already solved Sarah's problem, so they go back to the dorm to celebrate Mexican Fiesta night.moreless

Professor Haskins (Bryan Clark) tells Charles that the test that he will take is rather easy, but it takes an emotional commitment to be a part of Princeton, he then leaves and goes back to direct the show. Sarah is touched that he gave up the interview for the show and Charles said that there will be other interviews and the show starts and it goes off without a hitch and Charles runs into Professor Haskins and he sees an emotional commitment he made with the show and graciously accepts him to Princeton and that it was Jamie who called him and they say their goodbyes on the stage.moreless

      There's an apparent catastrophe in the Powell household and it seems that it's not going to be an easy one to solve. Sarah (JOSIE DAVIS) is the proud parent of Ross, a pet turtle, who until recently, has lived in relative safety in the Powell back yard. But when Sarah goes away on a nature field trip she leaves Adam (ALEXANDER POLINSKY) in charge of Ross. Upon her return, Ross is gone! Sarah assumes the worst, and accuses Adam of turtlecide. Well Adam swears he is innocent and that Ross was alive and well a few hours ago, but no one will believe him. Adam knows he is innocent until proven guilty, and requests a trial with Charles (SCOTT BAIO) as his attorney. The only problem is Charles is supposed to be leaving with Buddy (WILLIE AAMES) for Ft. Lauderdale. The ever-loyal Charles,unable to disappoint anyone, decides to postpone his departure and help the hapless Adam. The trial proceeds, with some surprises about the real culprit, and the real fate of Ross the turtle, and in the end everyone is happy, as always when Charles is in Charge.moreless

That means he will not be able to take Michelle out to dinner, but Buddy comes up with an excellent suggestion -- Buddy will pick up the seafood dinner at the restaurant, and Charles and Michelle can have an intimate dinner at home. Easier said than done - Jason is in a school play and has a problem with laughing when he comes to a certain line. Lila needs lessons in throwing a good softball - that is, not throwing like a girl. Douglas is invited to a party and just has to know how to dance. He doesn't want to look like a jerk. When Charles and Michelle finally sit down to dinner in the kitchen, the children come in and interrupt them. Charles apologizes to Michelle and tells her that it was not planned that way, but she explains that she loves it. She comes from a large family, and she is really having a wonderful time. When Jill and Stan come home, Jill announces that she has made a decision - she wanted the promotion alright but not at the expense of missing out on spending precious time with her family. Promotion and added responsibilities can wait until her children are older and don't need her as much.moreless

Jason returns home battered and bruised and not on the team, Lila does have the cheerleader personality, while Douglas made the school band and gets to play the triangle. Stan and Jill are upset at the frustration and humiliation Lila and Jason have gone through -- and Charles is asked to straighten out the situation. Meanwhile, Gwendolyn Pierce is trying to get Charles to join the college school play, and Buddy wants him to join the swim team. Charles sets Gwendolyn and Buddy aside and coaches Lila the technique of being an exuberant cheerleader. When she succeeds, she decides to remain with the student council. He learns that a school bully would not allow Jason to try out for the team and has Jason face him.       ADAM (Alexander Polinsky) thinks he's seen a UFO outside his window and his sisters are convinced they've seen an alien in the kitchen. He accidentally finds out that the topic of Buddy's psychology term paper required the simulation of a UFO experience in a typical American household. Though CHARLES is angry, he is grateful that one mystery is solved. Later the kids find a guinea pig in the dryer - their "alien" - and another mystery is solved. Stan succeeds in helping his mother accept that Jill has her career, Charles is an important part in the children's lives, and that by no means this arrangement should make her feel insecure towards the attention the kids give to Charles.       The latest challenge to Charles' (Scott Baio) vivid imagination is a visit by an old shipmate of the absent Commander Powell. Unfortunately, company isn't all he tries to keep, and Charles doesn't like it. Charles confides to Walter (James Callahan), who being an old seadog doesn't understand Charles' suspicions since a Naval officer is always honorable, etc. But when Charles and Walter are hospitalized overnight with a case of food poisoning brought on by tasting contaminated clams, Matty moves in. His campaign to capture Ellen Powell's affection is first subtlety slowed by the three kids and then abruptly terminated by Ellen's own left hook. Charles, Walter and Buddy (Willie Aames) arrive moments later to support Ellen's edict that the frustrated Lothario take his leave immediately.moreless

      Charles, Buddy, and Gwendolyn have just returned from two days camping out in line for tickets to a Bruce Springsteen concert. They feel that it was a worthy life experience spending the night with fifteen thousand people sleeping with their heads on the curb, but it did not get them tickets to the concert. They still would give a lot to get tickets —— but how? Charles is still occupied with his problem when Jason and Douglas come in the back door carrying the dog. They blame each other for ‘killing' the dog. All the while, the dog is very much alive, and both boys want Charles' permission to keep it. Charles agrees that they may-- just long enough until the rightful owner has been found. In the meantime, Jill and Stan have to go to a wedding, Charles has to make decisions on how to sort dirty laundry, and what to do with the two Bruce Springsteen tickets he just won by phoning alocal radio station. Buddy and Gwendolyn are making it very difficult for Charles to decide who is to go with him to the rock concert. Finally, Charles convinces the two boys that they cannot keep something that may be very dear to someone else -- they return the dog to the owner and get a $20 reward. And Lila gets to go to the Bruce Springsteen concert with Charles.moreless

      Stan Pembroke comes home expecting Jill to be dressed and ready to go to the Vice Presidents reception but the Pembroke home has suddenly turned into ‘Little Crisis Central.' Lila and Douglas brought home grades from school that they are not very happy about. Even Charles and Buddy are grumbling about too much homework and too much pressure. Jill feels that she cannot just walk out of the house and leave the children without at least talking about their individual problems, but Stan maintains that he has confidence in Charles --Charles has his trust and he will resolve the problems, whatever they are! That is why Charles and Douglas have to go to Doug's school and Charles has to face the boy's teacher. A stunned Charles meets an absolutely gorgeous and fashionably dressed young woman —- Ms. Susan McCoy. It turns out that she is also very knowledgeable. And during their meeting the other Pembroke children drop in, they are able to benefit from the valuable lesson the teacher is giving them. Ms. McCoy tells them that teachers are mostly trying to teach students discipline —- and how it helps them later in life! They all realize at the end of their meeting that it was a rewarding afternoon.moreless

      Charles comes home triumphant from a softball game. He is so happy with life, his job, school...Lila is getting ready for a survival trip to which Douglas was hoping to go also, all hidden in her duffel bag. Unexpectedly cousin Elliot shows up at the Pembroke house. His ideas of how to deal with children, what is permissible and what is not, does not necessarily coincide with Charles' opinions. The children drink coffee, overeat on ice cream to the point of stomach aches, Elliot even plans to take Lila - who is only fourteen years old - to a dark, smoky night club. Charles is undecided. Should he step in and stop all the "fun" or should he not get involved at all? His friend Buddy had told him that blood is thicker than water, and Elliot is family. In the end, Charles does put his foot down, and to his amazement finds out that Mr. and Mrs. Pembroke were just letting him go through this experience by himself, since they knew all along how things were going to end, and that you cannot simply say ‘yes' to everything and then not be present to accept the consequences.moreless

      Count on Charles (Scott Baio) to date a girl who comes equipped with lovely eyes,a gorgeous body, and a set of huge parents, that accompany her on dates. All he has to do is find a way to invite her to the Powell house and have the Powells invited elsewhere, all at the same time. Does it work? You know Charles. Buddy takes the family Out to a concert, while Charles gets all set for a cuddly date with Anna. But when she arrives, Charles discovers that Mama Grundov and Poppa Grundov go along on Anna's dates and so does her hulking brother. They are from the Old Country, you see. If that's not bad enough, add a sudden thunderstorm so the Powells are rained out of their concert, and now we have, you guessed it - a large and unhappy crowd in the Powell home. But never fear, Charles will handle it. Even with visitors from another country, (Charles thinks they may be from another planet,) everything will work out... after all isn't Charles in Charge?moreless

      Mr. and Mrs. Pembroke are spending the evening out and Charles is baby-sitting. He is busy preparing for Gwendolyn's visit, with whom he plans to study. Buddy shows up unexpectedly and wants to go to The Lamplight with him to look at girls. After all that is what guys should be doing on a Saturday night.. Gwendolyn is enraged when she finds out that Charles occasionally hangs out there with his friends. Buddy and she argue heatedly and it just makes matters worse. Meanwhile the children —— Lila, Jason, and Douglas —— are also home on a Saturday night. They are watching special election results, which unfortunately do not turn out as expected, and Michael Jackson's appearance at the victory party is cancelled. When Mr. and Mrs. Pembroke come home, they help calm things down a bit. Charles realizes that Gwendolyn is very sensitive and not perfect after all, and Buddy is also a special friend who makes the college years fun!moreless

      The Wilsons would like to hire a young lady to take care of their children. Mrs. Pembroke suggests that she spend some time with Charles to see if she's up to it. Much to Charles' embarrassment, Jane (Meg Ryan) turns out to be a very pretty girl who has heard many great things about him. The kids do not usually manage to get into big fights. But because Jane believes that they should settle their differences their own way, things get completely out of hand. This time their fight escalates into clothes swiping, chemical warfare and mental torture. All this action is being taped by Lila who has a very important school assignment. When Mr. and Mrs. Pembroke return from their trip, they find Jane in the kitchen, thinking. She realizes that children are capable of much more than she ever dreamed possible and that a "normal job" would probably be a better idea.moreless

      Season 1 - Episode 13
      Charles is pushed for time; the strain shows on his face; he has to meet a deadline for his school paper. His scholarship depends on it, and he has been assigned to write the paper with someone -- his friend Buddy Lembeck. He needs to concentrate, but the noise around him is deafening. Lila has a loud conversation with her girlfriend on the telephone. Stan and Jill are arguing, and Jason and Douglas are trying to put it on tape. Furthermore, Buddy shows up and tells Charles that he has finished with his part of the assignment. Gwendolyn wants to buy a used car and she would like for Charles to look at the car for her as soon as possible —- like that night! Jill rushes out of the house to review a new Chinese restaurant but comes back soon, and then resumes the argument with her husband. In the meantime, Douglas made Jason disappear through what he calls a scientific experiment. Then Charles has to explain to Douglas that you can argue with someone --or disagree -- and still love each other. And that is exactly what is happening with his parents. There is no end to all the commotion, and Charles knows he is in trouble until the Pembrokes decide to go out to dinner and give Charles time to finish his school paper in peace.moreless

      Charles is in charge of the Pembroke children when their parents are off on a week's vacation in Jamaica, their first one without the kids. The offer she makes him is very tempting and Charles almost accepts it but backs out in the end, realizing that he does not need a new job. He has one already that brings him enough money to go to school, which is really all he wants. Grandma Irene decides that it would give her more privacy if she moved into an apartment close by and that she also is more than capable to handle her new pizza-selling campaign by herself.moreless

      Lillian(Ellen Travolta)is thrilled to see Frankie Romano(Robert Ridgely)a man she almost married, who is now a travelling salesman, Charles(Scott Baio)is glad to see his mother happy, Sarah(Josie Davis)is desperate to make the Powell house an environmentally safe house by changing the light bulbs and turning one of the trash cans into a recycling bin. Frankie and Lillian tend to rekindle an old flame between them, Charles likes Frankie but the rest of the family thinks he's after something like her diner, but when Lillian announces that she is selling the diner, Charles senses something is wrong, but when Frankie realizes that she is selling the diner he immediately tells her not to sell, and aks her to marry him. Lillian is overjoyed and doesn't know what to say, so she goes to Charles for advice, but instead she turns down his proposal of what Charles said to her, that her marriage to his father made her happy and that Frankie doesn't need a wife to make him happy, Sarah decides to buy young trees with the money that she won with her essay and after the revelation Adam(Alexander Polinsky)faints and Jamie(Nicole Eggert)drags him into the kitchen literally.moreless

      Charles and Buddy are excited about their very first bachelor party. At the same time, a young man whom her parents cannot stand has asked Lila out. Lila tries to make her parents see how phony the other guy is they want her to date, and that the young man of her own choice is not trying to impress them with all sorts of lies —— he is honest and sincere. When Abba reveals his true colors by admitting that it is a fraud and offers Charles and Buddy 20% of the take, he then leaves and Jamie overheard everything, the family is just thrilled to have the old Jamie back.moreless

      Jill Pembroke gives Charles two tickets for a ‘Knicks' game. Charles is so excited about this special treat, and because Mrs. Pembroke always does such thoughtful things, that he thinks of a way to do something special in return. In a conversation with Buddy, the name Max Ziegler comes up. It does not mean much to Charles, but it does to Jill. Max and her went to high school together and she has been following his brilliant career ever since graduation. She thinks of him as a genius and Charles decides to call Ziegler, a.k.a. ‘Mr. Brilliant' to invite him for dinner. When Stan Pembroke finds out who the quest of honor is, he becomes quite upset, but decides to go along with it to make his wife happy. And, just as Stan predicted, Ziegler turns out to be an unpleasant, opinionated and condescending person, who ends up on the door step when Stan and Charles have taken as much as they think they can. While trying to cope with the presumptuous visitor, everybody is also looking out for Howard, the chameleon Jason is taking care of.moreless

      Charles (Scott Baio) has to go down to Maui to look after a Hotel for Professor Higler, he can't because he has to look after the kids, he then asks Buddy (Willie Aames) to go instead but he and his fiance Nurse Bennett are going to explore caves and each other, Buddy comes back and Charles has already gone, so he calls his cousin Dudley (also played by Willie Aames) but when Charles arrives he sees someone that resembles his best friend Buddy, he then realizes he came all the way for nothing, Dudley asks him to stay in the room where he's staying "The Boat House". Dudley and Mitch try to stop a jumper from jumping and he'll jump unless his girlfriend agrees to marry him, the there's someone climbing the Hotel calling himself "The Human Fly", Dudley has a plan and calls the local television station, but with he and Mitch's job at risk and with the owner of the Hotel on his way. Mr. Higler (Dick Gautier) receives a phone call from the owner saying he sees the person climbing the Hotel and loves that it's a tribute to him and Dudley and Mitch's jobs are saved. Charles returns home and tells the Powell's about his trip and gets a telegram from Buddy who delivered it personally and is waiting in the kitchen, it says that he gave Dudley the job, so he goes and shows his appreciation literally.moreless

      Walter (James Callahan) wants Jamie (Nicole Eggert) to go to Albuquerque to visit relatives, but Jamie doesn't want to go and that she has other plans so Sarah (Josie Davis) agrees to go and when she arrives she sees that he cousin Amanda(also played by Nicole Eggert) looks a lot like her sister Jamie. There she meets her Aunt Elaine (Cecilia Hart) and Uncle Steve (David Graf) and her cousins Melanie (Olivia Burnette) and Michael(Michael Manesseri). A Foreign exchange student from Romania named Nikki (Ivan Geuron) comes to stay with the family. Sarah is trying to adjust seeing how her relatives by comparing their lifestyles, and with the family always busy all the time and no time for each other, Amanda announces that they are going to have a family dinner so that she can talk to her parents more, but her plan backfires when her parents can't stay for dinner, Michael and Amanda blame Nikki, Sarah then calls Charles for advice, he then tells Sarah that Nikki should explain to her that the children need their parents. Around the dinner table they each explain their problems one at a time, but Amanda explains that she wants to date a Mexican boy, being afraid that she'll get disowned, Steve tells Amanda that it's her decision to make. Charles receives a phone call from his mother saying that she forgot to drop off Aunt Sally's (Ellen Travolta) birthday present, so Charles has to give it to her in person and be back at the house no later than 6:00, when he realizes that his Aunt Sally's Car Wash is in deep financial trouble, and that she has no choice but to fire Bobby (Rodney Eastman), Spider (Jeff Davis), Tyrone (Billy "Sly" Williams) and Arthur (Jack Bannon). Charles has to get home and his cars exhaust needs to be fixed. Sally asks Arthur to check the books to see what she needs to repair her income. Spider, Tyrone and Bobby had a meeting and they say that they will work for Sally even though she won't be able to pay them and that they don't want to break up the family and that they'll give her their tips to pay rent. Arthur comes back and says that her husband Vincent has been keeping separate books for himself and the Car Wash and keeping money from Sally so she gets to keep the business after all. Charles arrives five minutes late and learns that Buddy (Willie Aames) taught the kids how to play "Strip Poker".moreless
