Betrayal's most important development is new side of 01 boxer we're introduced to after he escapes to the gammaverse (after being shot in his nightclub).
it turns out 01 has a wife and two children. and it seems, another personality in the gammaverse. the question is, has he been playing the part of the spoiled brat turned psycho in beta and alpha, or do his personalities shift with each universe? good question. because in gamma, 01 walks softly on beaches at sunset. he wears asian inspired leisure wraps. and he seems to yearn for a time when he can be a content pacifist, living by the ocean.
as 01, michael filipowich demonstrates some formidable acting abilities. his pacifist, loving husband personality in gamma is believable, though a bit offputting. offputting only, though, because it is so jarring to see 01 calm, collected and even sincere. or is he? du du du...
as for karl, his character gets a bit of attention in this episode as he becomes the target of a torture and interrogation session with the vexcor's security head in beta, ren porter. things aren't pretty. karl begs for his life as ren threatens to give him "the necklace" unless he exposes charlie's whereabouts. the necklace is a burning tire around the neck. karl caves. the importance of this scene i suppose is that it shows karl is not the idealist that even he had thought he was. which is good. it's the first time this character ceases to be so one dimensional.
and as for charlie, well, charlie's in trouble! ren's on to him. and leave it to charlie to look surly and contemplative, sometimes sweaty, as the world threatens to cave in on him, and as he evades trouble yet again...
